Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

ya- sorry, 38 in RPI, not 34 & not PWR,(sorry, only 1 cup of coffee this morning!) as PWR doesn't go that high! If NU is going to go on a roll and manage to get up to top 25 with series' against UNH and BU and the HE Tourney ahead- UNH could be playing with fire if they don't take care of business this coming weekend as it relates the NCAA's.

the TUC line changed this year to everyone with an RPI of .500 or better, so they're not THAT far from being a TUC, but I'm not sure theres enough left to make them a TUC

But as you originally pointed out, Just win.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Great job by Goumas. He and that second line were really on fire last weekend at Vermont and were the only line consistently going all out on Saturday night at the Gutt.

I saw that UML's season thread has nearly 1000 posts, and they are having the worst season in the history of our league (I think?). What gives 'Cats fans? Too quiet here :D

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

It appears that Umile is set with his first three lines (Thompson-Desimone-Sislo, Goumas-Borisenok-Moses and Speelman-Block-Henrion) but both of the past two weekends he's had major changes to the 4th line from Friday to Saturday. This past Friday it was Manz-Silengo-Sorkin with Burke-Pavelski-McCarey on Saturday. Who do we think will comprise the 4th as the season finishes up, or will he continue to rotate into the playoffs?

Injuries and the degree of healing will probably be a factor. Early last week, Coach Umile was quoted as saying that Greg Burke had injured his back and probably wouldn't play against UVM. He apparently recovered enough to play on the 4th line Saturday. I was at that game and Burke did not seem to be playing at 100%. During Friday's game, the NESN coverage showed Nick Sorkin getting crunched into the boards in the first period and he appeared to be holding his right arm limply after the play. I think he sat out a few shifts. If both Burke and Sorkin are able to recover to near 100%, then they probably see a lot of icetime. I thought McCarey played well on Saturday (e.g., he made a nice spin and shoot move in the crease) so he's a respectable backup. My personal preference (FWIW - which ain't much) is Silengo centering Sorkin and Burke.

Refraining because I don't like negativity.

It makes sense. Extreme situations (good or bad) bring out the comments. UNH has had a good season thus far, but not a ton to talk about. Unlike, say, whether the coach should stay or not, what the school can do, whose fault it all is, etc.

Umile's system is working well considering all the big 'gets' that UNH loses. Imagine if the club snagged yandle, held on to smith and Van Riemsdyk and added bourque and white? They played well with one NHL prospect in 2008 and were actually good enough to win a national title. (two if you count how good butler is doing right now) Sad to say, but I think a little luck with getting some NHL talent might be the difference between a NT and what we have come to expect.

On the other hand, one can mention BU to any kid in juniors, and he'll immediatly think NHL. How many NHL ready players did parker need to squeek away with a title? Cohen, Gilroy, Yip, Wilson, Shattinkirk, and even Bonino has seen time in the show. Yet it took one cheezy hooking call on JVR for this club to score 2 goals against Umile's team , most of whom have either retired from hockey or are getting work in the east coast leagues.

Now if UNH can adopt BC's system for the playoffs. They might as well be Maine from 10 years ago. Maybe York and walsh told their guys to stop doing drugs and drinking before the playoffs! Just kidding.....but seriously...

I have been out of the country and have missed games the past two weekends. Has the fourth line been getting much ice time lately? If not, I hope that the first three lines are not getting burned out before the post-season.

They've been getting the same amount of time they have for the last few years. Usually 3-4 shifts in the first period, 2-3 in the second and 1-2 in the third. I would love to see a time on ice or average shift length stat, because their shifts are usually around 30 seconds while the first line is regularly out there for over a minute. I feel like this could be a reason why the first line hasn't been as productive lately as they were earlier in the season.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Sophomore Ansel Ivens-Anderson left the program without ever playing a game for the Wildcats. According to Umile, the forward/defenseman from Pound Ridge, N.Y., hasn't decided whether he'll transfer or not.

"He wasn't playing," Umile said. "It's a tough situation in fairness to him. He's come in every day and worked hard. We talked about next year. Because of all that, he decided to end it now."

From today's Fosters Daily Democrat. Good luck and best wishes to Ansel going forward wherever he ends up.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

UNH just curtailed all operations and canceled all classes effective at 12:00pm today. The game tonight is still to be played as scheduled. For those who are going to the game, please drive safe!

That's certainly a mixed message... you can almost always have a Saturday/Sunday series.

IIRC, when my wife was at UNH, they never cancelled anything for snow, but they did shut-down for a day due to cold. Must be truly awful up there. Be careful kids.
