UNH At The Starting Gate....

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

It's why I'm a self-described "foolish fan." The joy of national recognition followed by an horrific tragedy and a series of mishaps. Warren Brown was a tall, agile, defensive forward. The tragic accident happened as he and two UNH players (Dave Bertollo, I think, and another whom I forget) were driving home to Ontario for the Christmas break. Because of the oil crisis, people often carried cans of gasoline in their trunks for long trips. As I recall, their car was hit from behind and the car caught fire.

When I returned from Christmas break, I discovered that the house I was renting with some buddies was broken into. I lost an extensive record collection, a stereo and TV.

The team maintained the #1 ranking in the second half of the season, even without Warren Brown and Bertollo (who had suffered burns in the accident). During some game late in the season, Cap Raeder - a future goalie for the Hartford Whalers of the upstart World Hockey Association - injured his leg. When #1 UNH played RPI in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC tournament, Raeder was at 3/4 mobility at best. Despite a memorable comeback, UNH lost - it was one and done. No invitations to the NCAA tournament in those days. The quest for the elusive National Championship, along with the frustration of not quite capturing it, continues.

Whoa....thats the story of Walter Brown....it gives the annual award additonal meaning....

On page 61 of the book Wildcat Hockey: Ice Hockey at the University of New Hampshire by Elizabeth Slomba and William E. Ross, there's a picture of Warren Brown's parents and little brother presenting the Warren R. Brown Memorial Trophy for the first time. The ceremony was just 2 months after Warren's death and the recipient was Dave Bertollo.

Hey, it's only 36 years ago, but the angst still lingers.

Agreed, seems like yesterday. I was driving home to Durham from Colorado through Ontario at about the same time they were heading home for the holidays. I was still in Colorado for grad school during spring 1977 when I watched the Badgers beat our Cats in the FF semi's on national TV.

It would be fine with me if Yale maintains their #1 ranking until they are exposed in the post-season this year. Being ranked #1 is a jinx in my opinion. Like being on the cover of SI.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

I believe that it was the defenseman Jim Harvey who was also in the car. Warren had gone back to get the gas out of the trunk when the car exploded. I was living in the SAE house at the time and when Rick Olmstead came down for breakfast that is when we found out and the saddest part for me was that I had introduced Warren to his girlfriend and they had just gotten engaged. Not a good time for anyone.

Boy...oh...boy..this is one sad story....lets wish all players going home this year safe travels...

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

I was at the final Warren Brown game, at BC's McHugh Forum, a 4-3 OT win with Gordie Clark tipping in the OT winner. UNH was riding high that year, #1 at the break and #1 at the end of the regular season. But the ECAC quarterfinal loss to RPI, 7-6 in OT, aided and abetted by an injury to goalie Cap Raeder, sealed UNH's fate. As most UNH lifers know by now, that was the game with the thrilling 3-on-3 CHC three goal explosion.

Hate to say this, but that game was the beginning of UNH's post-season frustrations. I'll always remember the week after that game, watching RPI get demolished by BU in the ECAC semis at the Garden and spotting Hislop and Cox taking it all in. I'm sure their thoughts were the same as mine . . .

Hey, it's only 36 years ago, but the angst still lingers.

RPI lost to Harvard, not BU in the semis. That 7-6 game was indeed strange.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Warren Brown's stats show he was a big forward at 6'1", 194 lbs. By Christmas break of his sophomore year, he had already equaled his scoring output from his freshman season. He had 7 goals and 4 assists through the first 11 games of that season.

I stand corrected. But my recollection is that the game must have started out all Harvard. My wife (fiance then) and I were sitting in the balcony of the old Garden (great seats) and saw Hislop and Cox sitting in the loge seats, kind of slumped back watching the action. As I write this I am beginning to think I might be recalling the '76 semis which included Harvard after they had knocked UNH off in the quarterfinals at Snively. That would have been Hislop and Cox's last game. Just more angst. Although a year later we finally got off the schnide with the double OT 10-9 winner over Cornell. Now that was a game!

I remember some talk on here in the past of someone finding a VHS copy of this game and wanting to get the clip of the three rapid goals on youtube, anyone know if this has happened?

Yes, I have a DVD which includes that highlight from the UNH-RPI game. Never got around to putting it up on youtube, but I will and will let you know when it's available.

I would love to see that. Somewhere ther must be an archive of the older games that were broadcast on NH public television. I'm always hoping that the Athletic Dept or Friends will put together some kind of DVD about the history of UNH Hockey.......

I was told that tapes of those games were not archived. Tape of that quality was expensive back then so it was reused. At least that is my recollection of the conversation we had with someone who still works for the station. Some footage still exists, but not every game. Always thought that would have been a great promotion for the program and the Friends. BTW, each year at the Friends Awards Banquet a video is shown just before the announcing of the new captains. There is great footage from the old days, going back to the '70's. But alas, no full games. I sure wish I could see some footage of Bob Miller as a freshman in the '74-'75 season centering Cox and Hislop. I think it took Charlie about two games to figure out that this kid from Billerica had what it took to feed two All-Americans.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Video does exist, I gave CHC copies of most of it....we do have the UNH-Wisconsin game also, as I gave copies to Mark Johnson and Mike Eaves, under duress of course....especially since it was Johnson who took the winning face-off in OT....as I remember it, we lost to RPI in '74, at Cornell in '75', and to Harvard, with Coach Cleary standing on the boards in "76"......in '77' we finally went to the Garden after Lumer fired from the right point and the puck went off Mike Mastrullo's skate into the net, thanks G-d! There we did beat Cornell in double OT when Gouldie ripped one coming down the right wing....the problem was that we were so happy to be goig to the Nationals, we forgot to play BU tough the next night.....I'll never forget as we walked off and got to the locker room after that BU game, Callahan or Silkie walked by and said "F@*%@ You, Year of the Cat, as it was the year that Al Stewart's song was #1......how can you not love what this sport does for you, even 35 years later!

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Keep talking about the 1970s while you can. Once this season is over, we'll all be talking about the 2010-2011 Wildcats for the next 100 years. I can't wait to turn that darn calendar on NYE to 2011, the year when the Wildcats finally break the jinx.

This is the year!!!! (Well, not technically since it's still 2010 and that RIT debacle... well, you know what I mean!)

Merry Christmas to you all!

edit - on a side note, I hope they don't use the "zuul logo" for national championship merchandise and use the cat's paw instead.

Stop Jinxing us. It's not very nice!:p

You were there for it all, as was I (although you were a bit closer). My take on the BU game in '77 was UNH just ran out of gas. The wound up scoring 16 goals in those two games but could only manage a split. We gave a good showing in Detroit and I have to believe if we had had that playoff experience in earlier years, we might have had enough to beat Wisconsin, although they were a **** good team. Don't have post-victory parties like theirs anymore, that's for sure.

On the plane ride back to Boston, we shared the flight with the BU team. They didn't win either, getting jobbed by the refs in the semis vs. Michigan. But I'll always remember Eruzione holding court, giving grief to schools like UNH and UVM as part of the cowboy boots, flannel shirt crowd. Meanwhile he was doing his best Saturday Night Fever imitation.

And here's another quip. Hung out with McCarey's father a few weeks ago before the at BU game. Among other things he tells us that Kevin's youth hockey coach, probably pee-wees, was none other than Kevin Zappia. Zappia was part of that Clarkson juggernaut in the late '70's which included the great Dave Taylor, who went on to fame and fortune with the LA Kings. I'll always remember the '78 Yale tournament (which UNH won) when we partied with the Clarkson contingent (and Jock MacKenzie, anybody remember him), including the players after the game. Doubt if we'll see that again!

I've been reading the Pinheads posts for years, but I honestly can't tell if Nick Papagiorgio is being sincere or if he has just found a new way to be cruel.
