UNH 2026-27 Season Let's Go 'Cats!

Tim Stutzle, what could have been. Committed briefly to the NH flagship, but too good to matriculate. A short-handed goal last night vs B's and pretty much a second shortie on the same powerplay but the penalty had just expired so not official.

Trivia Question: Who holds the Hockey East record for most short handed goals in a career? What was his most famous one? Who assisted on it?

Another trivia question - Who was in the penalty box?

Mowers had two shorties on the SAME penalty kill, cant remember vs whom. Grabbed the puck in the UNH zone on one of them. He could get up to speed deceptively quick and could fly, but also finish (hello Johnny Rogers). Made a sharp turn and rather than flinging the puck, went right towards the boards and the d tried a squeeze hip check and barely nicked him. Mowers got his feet under him and was gone. 99% of skaters either A) Fling it, or B) get pancaked into the boards.

Oh, and his girlfriend then wife was a UNH gymnast who was rather easy on the eyes. Funny how that happens.

(Slightly) fun fact: Mark's mother was a friend of my mother's back in the day. I don't recall how they met, but the two lived just a few miles apart, and used to hang a little.

Truly, all of Greater Utica were fans of his back then. He garnered a river of ink in the local newspapers (remember newspapers?) A local celebrity when Umile's teams were as dangerous as a basket full of cobras.

Yeah, been a while, but that was a great era, no? UHN used to scare the shit out of me, as a Maine fan. I still have nightmares about that '99 team. Might have been the best first line I'd seen since Maine in '93.

;)

Mark and Jana's daughter Gracy was a Wildcat as well

The mere concept that any Merrimack team could ever even once be overconfident in a game against UNH probably risks breaking the time-space continuum.

Having said that ... this might just be that once-in-a-millennium occasion, so watch for UNH to at least make it close, if not pull a stunning upset over the fat cat Warr- ... lolololololololololololololololololol dammit I knew I wasn't gonna be able to make it all the way through that one, keeping a straight face and all 😂 😂 😂 😂
Remember the days when a tilt at the beautiful Lawler Rink was a de facto home game for the Wildcats? Been a while since that's been the case. I think the Warriors will be "appropriately confident" tomorrow night, and get the W. You just know that Scotty B gets a kick out of taking down his former employer!

UNH begins their HockeyEast schedule tomorrow down at the latest “house of horrors” in Andover (never thought I’d be saying that). I saw the earlier comment that we haven’t won down there since pre COVID. That’s… a tough one to fathom.

Anyways, with banner night and all for Merrimack, you know their guys are gonna be pumped and coming out on fire. I’m concerned UNH will be a bit shell shocked after the massacre in Connecticut last weekend. Merrimack is no QU, so I don’t think it will end up as a touchdown and 2 point conversion point differential. But still, until UNH shows they can play even mediocre defense, it’s tough to see them winning this game…

UNH: 2 MC: 4

I’d love to be wrong, as all HockeyEast points are extremely coveted. I expect we get into the W column next weekend up in NY. Hopefully we return to the Whitt with at least one win before MSU comes to town because that could get ugly fast.

If UNH starts 0-6, do you think the new boss could make a mid season changing of the guard to spark the team?

If this were professional sports, absolutely yes. But if it were professional sports, MS7 would have been gone years ago.

With all of the budget-related grousing, I don't see where a mid-season separation is worth the effort. Unless they brought in an experienced volunteer to coach for gas money from Bow Lake, or convinced GM Tortorella to slide down for a couple of months, the only "solution" would be to let both Stewart and Guiliano take over the team for the duration, enjoying 30 game auditions for the job(s), while the new AD has more time to scour the bushes for someone who would come in from the outside and take over for good this time next season.

FWIW ... with our current ingrate incompetent HC espousing the unparalleled support of the new AD in last week's Union Leader piece, wouldn't it be funny to learn that steps are already being undertaken to identify/line up his successor for the end of the current season? Yeah, that'd be a hoot, now wouldn't it ...

Hey - if the “volunteer” coach decides to come back, we may have to resurrect the NRN countdown! It may have to come with a bit of an asterisk though, as the guy he hand picked to succeed has cost his program almost 10 years of futility.

If the decision was made to move on (I personally put this at about a 1-5% chance, and I think we’d have to start 1-9/0-10, not just 0-6) I think the easiest choice would be to have Stewie/Guiliano finish out the year as co-head coaches. This helps boost their resumes for wherever they go next, and maintains the status quo as much as possible for the players.
