UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

Walsh is a hammer out there and everything looks like a nail. I don't know what I think of his offensive speed or skill and still an excellent 4th line checking guy. Causes lots of disruption.

I also appreciated splitting up the 4th line and adding a little grit up and down the line-up. If your top 9 aren't going to light the lamp then stop protecting them as a the scoring part of the line up.
Great post., JB, and succinct! So frustrating that MS7 waited until game number 32 to shake up all his lines, and of course just happenstance that DiMatteo finally got some time in net. All too little, too late, of course.

He has more skill than initially meets the eye.

Think Ed Caron from back in the day. Despite having soft hands, he was unfairly targeted and penalized for his size and thunderous checks. My sense is that if Walsh gets regular shifts, he could evolve into a Mike Grier, big bodied, cherry picker of a goal scorer, especially on the PP. The same could be said for Zach Hahn who also has the size, and could slot well into the PP. Granted, the sample size for both players is small, but they've both taken advantage of their opportunities, the major/misconduct from Walsh notwithstanding.

I'm assuming you mean shake up the lineup and not the lines....he shook up the lines constantly.

All season, it was a nightly surprise to see who was playing, with whom and for what line.
Hasn't he always done this? Seems like there is no consistency/has not been any. Well that's not exactly entirely true but..
You'd think he'd know what is working at this point but, I digress. Still,
a coach has the right to make line up changes etc. IF they workout. Going 1-12-whatever doesn't show that? I dunno. Who knows...

Against my better judgement bought tix for Friday night...

If the distinguished daughter wasn't flying home for spring break, I'd be there too. Saturday, for sure.

My particular point on this line up change was the who, not that it happened. Yes, Souza has moved the lines around this season and he should be, they aren't winning so look for something that clicks. Yet it has typically been insular. Mixing the "top 6" or "top 9" forwards.

It hasn't been as strategic and what I mean is "need more grit in the corners on the top lines" so we are moving Lavins, Sweeney (off the 4th line) and Skrastins (off the 4th line) on to rolls on the top 3 lines. This fundamentally changes the make up.

Now maybe I am giving more credit than is due. I see Devlin-Lavins-Comny having more sand paper as a line (see Lavins) than Devlin-Ring-Comny. I am trying to look past the stats to thinking about play style.

I do think Saturday's line up is spreading out your "scoring". However, since the top-6 or even top-9 aren't scoring, why not.

Lavins ups the ante in terms of hustle, grit, aggression and two way play on whatever line lucky enough to have him. Lots of heart and attitude and elevates those around him...noticeably

I am no expert on this stuff (hence not a hockey coach) and it seems obvious to me Conmy needs space to operate and other teams smartly check him tight. He is clearly UNHs best offensive player. So what are the strategies out there to make him some space, fast guys, big guys, etc. etc. Then you start working your way through the list till you find tricks that bother the opposition, knowing that the opposition is going to adjust. Do you get a big enough guy that just drives the net and pulls defensive players with him (as an example). It just seems to me UNH has a very limited number of thing that have been tired and when you are loosing you need to do something different, some times just to get the other team to do a WTF is that moment.

As to Lavins, I think his ceiling is a 2nd or 3rd liner on a really good team. He has a really nice all around game, just not a great shot. Several of his goals this year have come on some beautiful tip-in/redirects (I have one in particular in mind that I hope was this year not last)

Whatever team Lavins is on, he will be the glue and the heartbeat, the type of player his teammates love and opponents dread.

Think Freddy the Hack from back in the day with BU.

I just wish that the experimentation would have begun before game no. 32. What are MS7 and his assistants doing during practice? I am assuming that they still practice?

I don't know the coach seem MIA and maybe that includes practice... I mean Souza is at the games.

we in here talking about practice. I mean, listen: We talking about practice. Not a game. Not a game. Not a game. We talking about practice.

Allen Iverson was fun (AI, before the term was hacked, speaking of Freddy Meyer). Freddy did his hacking from the blue line, IIRC?

You beat me to all of it, Snives. Like a rented mule. And yes, darling Freddy from Wolfeboro was a defenseman.

Good morning. Here's my issue with recruit Nico Tournas. The kid has really matured this year and I think is gonna be a very good Div1 player. He's UNH's best recruit other than the 4 Canadians coming in. Souza has not signed his NLI and he could walk. Nico is from Connecticut and Connecticut is having a great season. I think you know what i'm saying. Mike Souza I hope you watch this board, Bring the kid in or you might have another Mike Vecchione problem. Vecchione stats at Union. 160 points all time leading scorer at Union.

A legit concern. Also note...
