UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

Kudos to Potluck for introducing the "voluntary buyout/resignation" angle. After a decent two year run (actually, calendar years 2023 & 2024), the wheels seem to have fallen off MS7's efforts to return the program to something resembling his predecessor's past glories. He has to be looking back at how desperate the situation was in late 2022, and now here two months into 2025, he's pretty much right back in the muck.

I personally don't see him stepping away from the best paycheck he's ever likely going to be receiving on a voluntary basis, and I don't see the AD forcing his hand ... perhaps at most convincing him to swap out one of his assistants (Guiliano?) as a way to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic. I would love to be proven wrong, though. We'll see, soon enough ...

I played golf late last year with a local NHL scout who waxed poetic about the ability of MS7 to turn the program around. When I pushed back on his six year track record of futility, I was told that he just needed time. Does this hockey fraternity only know how to protect their own?

How much time does he need? As I've said a million times, would his dismal track record of success be tolerated (and rewarded) in the private sector? Nope.

I think it’s incumbent on Souza to approach the AD and ask to work out some type of buyout. Souza is a good man. I’d imagine he’s suffering quite a bit just knowing the hell his players are enduring. Souza’s career at UNH was outstanding with many great moments. The kids Souza recruited are experiencing no good moments in the program.

Btw, Souza doesn’t look too good behind the bench. Weight gain and negative high stress take it out of a guy.

Sticking to hockey here despite having an itch that says the school is now so far left leaning that winning is becoming irrelevant. MS7 may get a trophy for bench gentleman of the year. :ROFLMAO: The season is over at this point. I am still contemplating renewing my season tix. It does appear as though there are some good recruits coming in (Oliver, Primerano, Carr, Conn, Bradshaw), however we are losing 75% of the defense and Whale is still not technically sound (particularly when skating behind his net). How many will test the waters of the TP? Here is to hoping everyone on the current roster stays, Oliver and company bring a new heartbeat to the whit, and MS7 takes some extra coursework over the summer on getting the most out of his kids. (Forever Optimistic)!

Is Sadowski's kid still scheduled to matriculate at UNH next Fall?

How ironic would it be that, on the verge of a 2/3 inter-generational reunion of the fabled "S" Line, the head honcho isn't here anymore when Sadowski finally arrives? Maybe we can round up a Shipulski to round things out?? Two Poles and a paisan???

Also, the Curse of the Jumbotron is nothing compared to the Curse of the Manchester Regional. UNH went to the Frozen Four 4 times in 6 seasons from 1998-2003. The first regional in Manchester was in 2004 and they haven't sniffed the FF since then.

Yup, I was for the Jumbotron before I was against the Jumbotron, which has brought us nothing but despair.

In parting, I'm not like the younger generation of Maine fans who seem to despise UNH. I'm old enough to remember the great Umile teams. (I even met both Dick and his trophy wife in a Hartford bar, way back when... Boy, she had a potty-mouth that rivalled my own, but they were fun to visit with.)

Anyway, I always rooted for them when they weren't playing Maine. The UNH 1st line in '99 was perhaps the most talented (and terrifying) I've ever seen. The cherry on that sundae was that Mark Mowers was a local kid, here in CNY, and my mom was a friend of his mom.

It doesn't look promising for UNH this year, but I'm pulling for that program to resurrect itself soon. Hockey East is a much better conference when New Hampshire is kicking ass and taking names.

And yet we were “in” all but three of these games in the new year, BU at the Whitt and second game at Agannis and second game in Orono. I am now wondering if Hellsten might have converted five or six of the losses and ties into wins, which would have kept us out of HEA basement and still in the hunt to be present in Manchvegas for the regionals.

The stat shared during one of the UMass broadcasts about UNH having the 4th lowest team Sv% in all of college hockey was very interesting...

Ahead of only Yale, Alaska-Anchorage, and Miami (they have since fallen below AA and are 3rd from bottom).

Who cares if the Cats were "in" all but three games? This isn't gym class or house league hockey.

Further to your point ... scoring in hockey has trended down over the last generation, pretty much at all levels, so close games are the rule as opposed to the exception. New offensive OR defensive concepts are few and far between. At the wider margins, you win or lose on talent ... but the closer the margins, the more likely you win or lose on coaching (execution, discipline and preparation). That puts UNH in a tough spot.

As UNH is pretty much locked in for 11th seed, who are we liking for our #6 seed opponent in the MBPBEGAM "playoffs"?

(1) UConn - rooting for this, for obvious personal and entertainment reasons, but it won't happen 😥
(2) Providence - I can't think of a team in this group less likely to lose at home to UNH in MBPBEGAM - pass
(3) UMass Lowell - Horribly overrated - UNH wins at least one vs UML in the RS final weekend, so why not?
(4) Merrimack - Scotty Borek feels the same about UNH as I feel about Luce and UConn - hard pass
(5) UMass Amherst - like Lowell, shouldn't be anywhere near the NCAA's, so my second choice

In some circles,as long as the Cats are "in" whatever game they play, it counts as a moral victory worthy of a tickertape parade and a shower of Boone's Farm out of a tin cup.

Here are the rankings of the teams I'd least like to face in the 'playoffs'

(1) Providence - they have our number. UNH never scores against them.
(2) UMass - I don't see UNH going out there and beating them. They've beaten BU & BC and play a lot of close games. +5 goal differential which is 4th best in HE
(3) UConn - not a team that really scares me, but they're having a decent season. Probably the most overrated coach in NCAA D-1 Hockey. Paid like he's won a National Championship but actually has only made one HE tournament final...and lost. But there's a first time for everything, and he's going to make the NCAAs for the first time in 12 seasons.
(4) UMass Lowell - Seem to have rebounded well after an abysmal 23-24 season. A little skeptical of them. I respect Bazin the most of any coach on this list.
(5) Merrimack - Certainly better than UNH, but not by much. Never really scared of these guys.
