UNH 2018 Offseason- Out with the old , in with the semi new?

Re: UNH 2018 Offseason- Out with the old , in with the semi new?

Indeed, lots of pleasant surprises so far in this offseason. We never did convene our thread contests awards ceremony at Libby's this spring, but I seem to recall that there was at least one contributor who voted that the NRN would not happen, despite extra MBPBEGAM games. I was against our coach teaching the NRN, before I was for him getting there, in early January, IIRC, as I was completely taken in by the best start in years, by our champions of October.

I stated pre-season that the NRN would not be reached. I started to severely doubt myself after October and November, but as sure as Christmas and the coming of the cold dreary months of January and February, I was correct in the end :D

Edit: Yes, I did play along with the NRN prediction calendar. Wishful thinking on my part :D

Do I win anything for calling it before the season started ?? ;) :D

Delay in announcing captains.

Delay in announcing second assistant coach.

No one saying that the goalie position is a lock.

No one saying we will win Hockey East this coming season.

No one saying that a return to the NCAA's is a slam dunk (oops, wrong sport) next season.

3 is a good thing, 2 is a very bad thing and the rest mean nothing...

I was thinking that 2 might be a good thing in that no one here seemed very excited about the perceived leading candidate.

Also, I found all of the talk during last pre-season about how the team would surprise us by getting back to the Garden and the NCAA's to be phony, despite my getting taken in by the fast start, which you correctly pointed out was against a team without its #1 goalie (Colgate) and a team that was not as good as it was supposed to be (UML)

Friend of mine speculated that White has not been named yet because his employer, the Winnipeg Jets, is still in the playoffs. On my plane ride back from the FF, I had the good fortune of sitting next to a former BC player (80s) who is now a scout for Edmonton. Among other things he told me was that, during the playoffs, only scouts for teams still in the playoffs are given free passes to view a game. He told me that because Edmonton wasn’t in, he could only scout AHL and ECHL, not the NHL. So that led me to believe that White still has an important role with Winnipeg as an advance scout since they are still in the hunt.

Dan if you are thinking what I'm thinking...they are back to the drawing board?

No, I think I agree more with Greg. That they've made their decision and see no reason to get that person into the fold quickly. It exhibits a complete lack of commitment and urgency about the reality of the situation UNH finds itself in. A new assistant - and recruiting coordinator - should be expected to get to work ASAP and should realize the urgent situation and want to get to work despite how much they may be enjoying exciting experiences at their last job...

NU landed a couple of big recruits earlier this week - but UNH apparently thinks this is down time and a full staff is unnecessary. It is a red flag in my opinion, and much more concerning than any peripheral annoyances...

I really don't care who the captains are - they'll have good reasons for their choices (at least internally), when they choose captains or what unrealistic expectations some may have. I do care that the new HC seems to have hired his buddy and would rather let him enjoy an experience than want him to get to work. This is another instance where actions speak a lot louder than any of the right words they may put together in press conferences or other gatherings...

Bingo. If accurate, this just seems way too same old, same old for my liking.

Secret handshakes and a "What, me worry?" mentality aren't going to turn this ship around anytime soon ...

With all due respect I hardly think there's nothing going on at 128 Main..I do realize that results speak for themselves and all but highly doubt it's as simple as all that. We fans only wish we had a clue as to what is really going on....

I would agree that in the event the new assistant is indeed who we think it is, his obligations are elsewhere at the moment. Don't forget we have two other coaches in place...That being said I anxiously await news from the front like everyone else!

Agree. I would just repeat that while other programs with a new coach (Mich State/Wisc/U.Mass/etc) flood the team with too many players the first year, and ethical debate about cutting guys, UNH is in the unique situation of looking for players to fill out the roster for his first year. We don't know what's going on behind the scenes, just that the scenes we see are atypical.

Again, we agree that a recruiting assistant is critical, and we will have to wait for the Jets to be eliminated. I'd note, again, that it seems unusual for a team with a new Head Coach being in a position of waiting on the third coach before they can fill immediate recruiting needs.

And to Dan's point, I guess that filling out this class is less urgent, because presumably Souza and Stewart have that planned. What is more important is getting back on the right side of recruiting, not playing catch up after the fact, but getting commitments from the 02s and 03s who will form the foundation for the future, with space to fill around the edges. Having not secured that foundation in 2015 to 2018 (or of having misjudged the core, a la Miller and Green on D) has put them in this current position. We need a guy who can get that foundation.

Maybe Mark White has done some scouting in Finland for the Jets? And, maybe he can recruit some Finns to UNH?

From his position he’s in charge of college free agents, so he watches the college game. Whether that incidentally involves seeing future college players in the USHL?? The best we can hope for it that he knows the player agents/advisors and can sell them in steering their players to UNH. The jets also have euro scouts and maybe they’ll put in a good word.

Jets have a bunch of Euro players, including Finn Forward Patrik Laine. :-)

This doesn’t get emphasized enough. The family “advisors”, who often are affiliated with professional player management agencies, have a lot of power in the college recruiting world. Sure, some kids commit to a school because they always wanted to play there. But just as often (and probably more often than not), the family advisor plays a major role in guiding a kid and his family to one program or another.

Terrific ... looks like the Finnish Shane Eiserman. At least he'd project to be a 4 year player ...

I would still like to see some more two-and-done and three-and-done recruits added to the mix, like Gildon and Maass this past year. And, no more sitting future NHL'ers like Warren Foegeli in the stands or wallowing on the fourth line.
