UNH 2018-19: Souza The Opportunity

3rd poweplay must have been that good that I don’t remember. All I do remember is Gildon took it from the offensive blue line around the zone until he was back where he started from without a pass or sho. One of UNHs powerplays the puck was in the CC players hands more than UNH. Penalties that were called were pretty embarrassing. MacKinnon hold was pretty lame. Gildons hook was pretty lame. I feel Vela’s call was a shut up call from the ref to Vela because the penalty was a stick on stick trying to clear the zone not a karate chop. Vela had been barking up the officials tree from the moment Gildon sat down until the puck was dropped deep in the defensive zone.

UNH had a couple good cycles behind the CC net however couldn’t make anything happen. Looking forward to seeing how UNH comes out tonight. Hopefully their conditioning was better than the football teams second half conditioning when they played CU in Boulder a month or so back. Playing at over 6300 feet is draining. If UNH stays out of box and gets shots through they should have a good opportunity for Sousa’s first W.

If I've noticed one thing watching college hockey out here - its they call a lot of penalties in the NCHC. So will be something to keep an eye on tonight.

Re: UNH 2018-19: Souza The Opportunity

Taylor starts in goal. Defensive pairs are the same, swap Dawson for Verrier. Lines are jumbled...

Wyse - Maass
Gildon - MacKinnon
Boyd - Dawson

Nazarian - Vela - Grasso
Crookshank - Pierson - Kelleher
Sato - Blackburn - MacAdams
BVR - Miller - Esposito
Sacco

1-0 CC early. Nick Halloran carries below the goal line and feeds it back to a wide open Trey Bradley for a roof job...

UNH with two quick PPs - not much doing on the first. Nazarian attacks the back door and finishes a Pierson pass on the second to tie the game at 1-1. Kelleher also assists.

But CC gets one minute later on a wrist shot that sneaks thru Taylor. Tough one.

And again as two UNH defenders fight over a puck that ends up on Nick Hallorans stick for an easy dunk. Taylor is out and Robinson is in - but only the second was really his fault. UNH needs to figure it out in the D zone, sloppy puck handling and failing to take any space away from CC forwards...

Ty Taylor gets the hook early, CC leading 3-1, Robinson in midway into the first period.

Re: UNH 2018-19: Souza The Opportunity

Pretty sure Boyd just shot one THROUGH the net. This will be reviewed when play stops...

It sure looked like a goal to me. I'm sitting directly behind and above the play. Boyd and UNH bench reacted right away too...

---

Yup. It's a goal. 3-2 CC. Boyd had to clearing pass attempts batted back to him at his own blue line and finally carried it up ice himself and would up for a big slap shot.

First team to 10 wins tonight. :)

Second straight night at elevation, not the game UNH wants to be chasing ...

Nice

Robinson makes a huge stop on an abbreviated 2-1. Then two more point-blank chances before Yoon buries one for CC. Lots of traffic. It's being reviewed also.

UNH D really scrambling tonight. I'm sure they're wondering if he was prohibited of getting back to the near side of the crease.

Goal or not Robinson is really playing well...

Re: UNH 2018-19: Souza The Opportunity

4-2 CC and it's still the first period, even after a UNH goaltender change.

Already watched the football team self-destruct this afternoon, looks like yet another self-destruction tonight. This team is NOT ready for prime time...sorry.

Re: UNH 2018-19: Souza The Opportunity

LONG review - but it's a goal. 4-2 CC.

---

That was a forgettable period. CC was all over UNH out skating them and dominating possession. 15-10 shot totals doesn't even seem right, but I guess that's what it was. UNH's play in its own end was dreadful...

UNH carried play early in the second, but Dawson takes a tripping penalty. Currently in our third review of the night as a puck sneaks by Robinson and freezes on the goal line. No goal. Penalty killed...

---

CC hits a pipe.

---

Near the end of back to back CC PPs Vela gets a SH break away but misses the net high. Second period almost over, still 4-2. After a fast start it was a lot of defense for UNH...

A Cruikshank high stick takes Gildon's helmet off. UNH PP with 14:59 to go. Need one here...

Nope.

A nice offensive zone shift from Grasso, Crookshank and Blackburn. It was really noticeable because UNH has had so little sustained pressure. Hard to score a lot of goals that way...

UNH finally starting to push - forcing CC into a number of icings. Time out CC five minutes left.

Re: UNH 2018-19: Souza The Opportunity

UNH net empty early with 3+ minutes left. So early that they fooled the linesman who whistled too many men while UNH was rushing across the offensive blueline before realizing what was happening...

Surprise blown and center ice face-off forces Robinson back in the net for now. Imagine he'll be out soon...

And he is...

Re: UNH 2018-19: Souza The Opportunity

Vela from Nazarian and Gildon extra attacker goal. 2:31 to play...

4-3

Empty net again

UNH presses hard with some nice chances but can't equalize. The UNH players who played 6x5 the last 3 minutes are gassed sticks on knees. They went for it, nice finish...

First period d-zone struggles too much to overcome...
