UND @ UW Nov 7 & 8: The Battle of the Bottle

Re: UND @ UW Nov 7 & 8: The Battle of the Bottle

Hmmm... I do confess a little of the spectre of giving up 3 goals in 4 minutes against Lake St. last year is hanging around...

Quite a bit of pressure on the young Badgers for the home opener and I can't say if I really think they'll weather the storm. Word is the new top line will be Soleway and LaBate centered by Rockwood. Those guys are going to need to take to the limit at the puck drop or we may be in for a long night. Frankly with this much pressure and uncertainty, I'd just as soon the boys dropped the gloves during the anthem.

Actually since it's Sue, I'd prefer that even without the pressure and uncertainty.

LaBate, Rockwood, Soleway is probably the second line. Zulinick, Hughes, Besse is the first. But, obviously either can be.

Hmmm... March 5th, 1983: The second best Badger game I ever was at in person. http://contentviewer.adobe.com/s/Varsity/99b48e16-3c90-5a4a-9d5e-2c2f6be0caa8/Gameday%20MHKY%20N.%20Dakota/History.html

Only a year or so removed from "The Water Bottle Incident", we were 0-3-2 against #1 UND for the year going into that game, having eeked out a 3-3 tie the day before. A rowdy crowd at the WCHA's that was energized and loud the whole way... but when Chelios struck the place just exploded.

Re: UND @ UW Nov 7 & 8: The Battle of the Bottle

Are these games still played at Kohl Center or has Alvarez relegated the Men's team to LaBahn already?

As much as it pains me to root for either team, I will have to root for the Badgers to eek out a couple of 1-0 games just for B1G pairwise implications. But I just can't get my hopes up. I wouldn't be shocked if Bucky ended the season winless so I can't see the Whioux losing either. Soon fan(s) will start filing into the arena. I hope he (they) brought their pillow.

Eaves' hockey = fun suck

Nodak's better batten down the covers on their wagons.

Latest forecast models predict Red Storm hitting the Kohl Center tonight!

Re: UND @ UW Nov 7 & 8: The Battle of the Bottle

North Dakota does not have much high-end talent at forward, other than Madison area's own Nick Schmaltz, who shows serious skills at times but also shows his inexperience. But they do have a solid lineup throughout and will usually get some hustle goals.

The have talent on defense, but not as much physical presence as Sioux teams usually have around the net. Jordan Schmaltz is very smooth and good on the PP (especially with his bro), but he will usually be good for a scary turnover per game. Overall the Sioux have very good offensive skill at D. If the Sioux start gliding into corners and chasing, they will struggle, since they don't have the high power forwards to carry them. They have a couple of guys who seem to like going to the box for stupid penalties and that is a concern.

Wondering if you Badger fans saw a lot of the Schmaltz brothers in Madison area rinks when they were young.

Lastly, don't throw down in the handshake line--these guys are good.

No, the crowd didn't explode with Chelio's goal. I was at that game, and the tying goal sucked the energy out of the UND Winter Sports Building, a/k/a, Ralph Engelstad Arena I. Although, candidly, the first couple of overtimes were so good that the UND crowd quickly got back into the game.

What everyone forgets is that Wisconsin scored in the third overtime, but UND then challenged the goal on the basis of an illegal stick. We were sitting there stunned at the apparent loss, but couldn't figure out why everyone was around the penalty box instead of shaking hands. Then it was announced the stick didn't measure up properly. The goal was disallowed and on top of it, Wisconsin was given a penalty. That's when the crowd exploded.

On an ensuing face off in the offensive zone, the UND player at the point mishandled the puck coming back to him and Houck was off to the races for the shorthanded breakaway. Probably the biggest emotional rollercoaster over a 5 minute period I've ever been on, and still in my book the best hockey game I've ever seen at UND in 40+ years, notwithstanding the loss.

Look at it this way--the Badgers are going to win a game, sooner or later:o

Awesome!

My quick description certainly may be colored by the people I was with and the elapsed 30 years, and the fact that we won, but I'm guessing we didn't sit next to each other either. But maybe you saw me there anyway? I was the guy wearing red?

It's pretty ridiculous this UND team is rated 2. They aren't a No. 2 team. They got crushed by Bemidji on their home ice.

Well, I for one certainly hope you are right about that.
I can't even say much about the Badgers because, like most of us, I haven't seen them live. Plus Eaves coaches a very detailed game that often takes a good deal of time for kids to get their heads around. Partly why I think he's had such a bad record early on in seasons, but been very good late.

I won't be surprised at any outcome tonight.

Re: UND @ UW Nov 7 & 8: The Battle of the Bottle

Sounds like a special teams festival tonight. Old WCHA/current Big 10 officials? UND radio didn't sound impressed with many of the calls, for both teams. Sounds like it kind of broke up the game.

Always nice to get a win at Kohl, historically a tough place to play for UND. Hope for a good one again tomorrow.

Refs were bad both ways.
