UML Recruiting: Finally in the 20s!

The Heisenberg and Elite Prospects sites has him heading to Lowell, but I believe he's heading to UMass Dartmouth based on below. The Elite Prospects site now has him going to Dartmouth.

Commitment Alert: Congrats to Kailin Chen on committing to UMass Dartmouth! He tallied 92 pts in 187 OJHL games and now joins a school known for top programs in engineering, business & marine science.
Thank you for the update, that makes a lot more sense. Upon seeing his 'commitment' I thought it was very much out of left field lol. Was trying to think of reasons why Lowell would commit to a kid that didn't even average 1 PPG in the OJHL 🙃

I also think he's heading to UMD.

Just looking at our incoming roster, and we will have at least 8 freshmen who either already are, or will turn 21, during next season. I thought we were going away from that, but apparently not.

USHL Phase II Draft is today. Recruits that have been picked so far.

Round 1, Pick 11 - Wyatt Herres - Waterloo
Round 7, Pick 113 - Charlie Kresl - Omaha
Round 12, Pick 193 - Lucas Busch - Tri-City

A new Goalie commit, 6'4, 177 pounds, 2004 who currently plays for Shreveport (NAHL). Nikola Goich, he's a 3.5* as per NZ, from Homer Glen, IL. With this commit, I'd guess Solomon moves to 2026 as incoming.

Bismarck won the NAHL Championship (Robinson Cup) last night by defeating August Classon and Lone Star 4-2. August had an assist in the loss.

Austin Elliott and the London Knights (OHL Champions) will begin play in the 105th edition of the Memorial Cup tournament this Friday.

A new recruit, 04' forward Dalyn Wakely who played for the Barrie Colts (OHL) last season.

Another NHL draft pick headed to UMass Lowell. Barrie Colts (OHL) forward Dalyn Wakely commits to River Hawks. 23-35-58 in 55 GP, then 7-17-24 in 16 playoff games. Picked by Edmonton Oilers in sixth round in 2024

Wow he scored 104 points last season. He must have been on a very good line.

3 NHL picks coming in, a possible 4th if Buttazoni gets drafted. A WHL defenseman that was nearly a PPG this season. A goalie that went 48-2 and won the OHL title.

Possible more room for another forward or two?

Is anyone else excited?

If they don’t score this season, we’ll know that Norm is the problem.

I was expected Wakely to sign with Edmonton at some point- he nearly made their AHL team out of camp. This is probably the best for his development though.

He was the center for Michigan State commit Anthony Romani that season, who was 2nd in OHL points at 111. Wakely was 3rd.

Personal note on Dalyn Wakely, he is a member of Curve Lake First Nation. As a kid, he played in the Little Native Hockey League- annual ice hockey tournament for Indigenous youth in Ontario. His dad played in it too, and his great-grandfather is in the Little NHL Hall of Fame. Here's an article from 2023 on his Indigenous heritage and his community outreach efforts, for which he was named the 2023 OHL and CHL Humanitarian of the Year that May. It might not seem like a big deal to those on the outside, but having this sort of representation means a lot to Indigenous youth.

UML has a really intriguing group of players coming in from the CHL, I'm fascinated to see how it all fits together. I think it's a good risk to take, especially with the earlier comments from Norm about wanting to get faster and better skaters. I'll be following along anyways to watch Nate Misskey.

Also... technically, Austin Elliott went 51-2. Won 3 games in Saskatoon before going on his adventure. Likely will improve that record this week.

These CHL recruitments coupled with the young talent returning from last season certainly have me day dreaming about Lowell hoisting a trophy or two in 2026. And no, I don’t mean the prestigious Cactus Cup.

We will have one of the oldest teams in the NCAAs, so if experience helps, this should be a good plus.

Another new forward commit. Elliot Gulley from the Green Bay Gamblers

3.75* recruit from Illinois, 5'10, 187. Not a big kid, but he is a late 2005 (Dec). From NZ in Dec 2024:
Elliot Gulley is a mobile forward who can snap a pass on target but is also not afraid to do the hard work. He delivered several sharp long shots on goal and will battle in traffic, scrambling for the puck. Gulley had a nice short-handed assist on a 2-on-1 rush and nearly had a second one on a similar play later. His best highlight, however, was catching a head of steam and slicing through the defense on his edges to create a scoring chance. He plays both wing and center but did not win faceoffs well. Gulley is a 2005-born forward who was intermittently involved in the play. He showed the ability to make both finesse and hard-nosed plays

Info on Dylan Wakley…

Dalyn Wakley(Barrie(OHL)), 3/5/04, 1st RC, NZ 4.25, 6’1″, 200 lbs, sniper, fluent puck handler, creative in open space, powerplay runs through him from the halfwall, a one timer option on the flank, use his body to gain separation and hold off attackers, skating is smooth and fluid, Gets to top speed quickly, dangerous player off the rush

4.25 and the nhl drafting team isnt putting them into their system? Interesting

Really starting to think the pros trust norm with some of these recruits

part of why NHL teams likely feel comfortable in the cases of Wakely and Misskey are that they were drafted after their draft year (D+2 for Wakely, D+1 for Misskey). makes them both 1. late bloomers, so extra time to cook before pro is ideal and they quickly age out of juniors 2. they have their draft rights for more years than other CHL drafted players, so they can punt signing down the road without worrying as much about losing exclusive rights. and of course, indicates trust in Norm to develop them.

There are other guys signed that aren’t as talented. Plus Wakely has the prototypical nhl frame. Lowell should feel fortunate. I know I would have liked to have seen him on Maine. He’s got all the tools for being a strong goal scorer.
