UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Did you beat out Merrimack for this kid or did MC just run out of schollies to hand out to the 91s for next year?
See my previous response. I'm not thrilled with bringing in 21 year olds and I've said that before. But I think Bazin is jumping into the recruiting pool late for 2012 and at this point is trying to fill a couple of the remaining spots for next year. At least that's my hope. In general, I don't believe we've had more than one or two 21 year old freshmen coming in during a given season. No, we're never going to be like BC/BU bringing in the 18 year olds, but the 19 year old freshmen, even 20 doesn't bother me as much for some reason.

I'll be honest that I don't follow the recruiting piece all that much. However, since this was referenced in the Merrimack season thread as well and I haven't a chance to respond to that so I'll kill two birds with one stone.

As long as the BC's and BU's of the world are at the top (and this won't change any time soon), you are not going to consistently talk a top 18-19 year old kid (dreaming of playing professionally) and his parents that foregoing the Boston schools for North Andover and/or Lowell is in his best interest. Once in awhile it may happen and it may not be the best of reasons. I don't like consistently getting older players any more what's been discussed but that's reality for D-II schools and the joke's really getting old. For now, that's the only way the smaller schools can compete. Will things change under Bazin, possibly, but I wouldn't hold my breath, and more importantly, wouldn't be concerned about the age thing. It is what it is.

UML adds a D recruit for 2012, Greg Amlong, a teammate of current commit Ryan McGrath at Cedar Rapids. He's 6'1", 188, born 12/8/91. He played in 45 games last year for the Rough Riders, picking up a 1-12-13 and was even on +/-. So far this season he has a 2-4-6 in 7 games with a +5.

Both those recruits BTW are from O'Fallon, MO.

Amlong was recently named USHL CCM Defensive Player of the Week.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Agreed with the recruiting aspect. Even looking at this year's class. Wallin and Wilson are the two youngest kids on the team and both have shown to be talented players. But the older/later recruits have chipped in very nicely. Buco, Brickler, Suter, Kamrass and Robbins have been contributors in almost every game. Once recruits pass by the age of 18, some colleges start just bypassing them and you can pick up some very quality hockey players as those 5 have shown. With HE playoffs and NCAA tourney bids will come the younger, better hockey players. Lowell just has to focus now on bringing in talent regardless of age right now. Winning is winning, regardless if you have 18 year old freshman or 20 year old freshman.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Long time Merrimack fan here. BU and BC can get any top talent in New England they want and get very talented prospects from all around the continent, as well. Small schools like Northern Michigan, Lake Superior, Bowling Green, Merrimack, Maine and St. Lawrence have had a lot of their success because of older players. I will say this much. Merrimack has had a lot of overagers and although some have been goons on the ice, there have been a lot of great young men who represented the college with class. Merrimack has also had a ton of Hockey East Scholar Athletes and All-Academic team performers.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

From USHR: Recruit Casey Shea is on the roster of the Mass High School All-Star Team that is heading to Minnesota for the 2011 Bauer National Invitational Tournament (Nov. 4-6). Other DI recruits on the roster are Ryan Fitzgerald (Malden Catholic/BC), Brendan Collier (Malden Catholic/BU), and Sam Kurker (St. John’s Prep/BU). The teams first game is against Shattuck-St. Mary’s on Nov 4.

Also, on the Heisenberg site in the "Listing by College" section, it's showing another (older) recruit for Lowell.

14 Games Player, 8-7-15 line, he's from Oxford, MI. He's at a -4 so far, but that doesn't seem too bad considering his team has given up 36 more goals than they've scored. No idea about this, but definitely seems a walk-on type. Interesting that he's the first ever college commitment from the Mustangs.

He had a 15-19-34 line in 54 games last year, and a -5 (compared to his team giving up 79 more goals than they scored).

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

I know it was posted that 5000 tickets are sold for tomorrow night but would i be cutting it close to show up and buy tickets at the gate ?

Anytime they have that many sold, I'd highly recommend it. I'm going to go by at lunch tomorrow. The lines will be huge, and the amount of tickets available will really depend on how many students will come out. They're trying to break the record and get over 1,700 students which means (I believe) that the tickets actually available tomorrow night will be few and far in between.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Well Coach Bazin has definitely been busy on the recruiting front, as Lowell picked up their 4th commitment in a week with winger Dylan Shapiro committing to the River Hawks yesterday. Shapiro is the second leading scorer for the Rochester Stars in the EJHL with a 5-4-9 in 15 games. He's from Penfield, NY ... 6'3", 185, born 6/4/93. According to the Heisenberg site, he's showing as a 2012 commit.

Also, ex-Lowell commit Colton Saucerman is now heading to Northeastern.

It's nice to see a '93 recruit. It looks like Norm is adding some size.
