UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Vernon won gam 1 of the Doyle Cup 3-1

Malcolm Lyles was the 2nd star of the game and one of the key to the game. Played big all night and was instrumental in both of the first two goals

The Vernon Vipers opened their defence of the Doyle Cup with a convincing 3-1 win over the Spruce Grove Saints in Vernon on Saturday.

Vincenzo Marozzi was superb for the Saints in the first period as the Vipers bombarded him with 18 shots while his team managed just 5 on Kirby Halcrow. Marozzi was especially hot during a Viper 5 on 3 power play that lasted a minute and 12 seconds. He made three saves on deflections and point blank shots that seemed destined to beat him.

At the other end, Spruce Grove nearly scored with the man advantage, but Kirby Halcrow denied Scott Allen by doing the splits and stopping the puck with his right skate.

The second period was more even as the Saints got their forecheck rolling and out shot the Vipers 11-7. However, the Vipers scored the only two goals of the period on counterattacks.

The first goal resulted from a neutral zone turnover created by Mike Zalewski and Malcolm Lyles. Zalewski fed Darren Nowick on the right wing. In attempting to check the speedy Nowick, gangly defenceman Jesse Slobodian tripped over his own feet, giving the Vipers an odd man rush.

Marozzi stopped Nowick’s shot, but Marcus Basara hustled to pop in the rebound at 6:06.

Zalewski was again a catalyst for Nowick’s goal at 17:10. Nowick picked a defenceman’s pocket at centre ice and found Zalewski, who cut across to the left wing and then fed a pass at the goal mouth for Nowick to tip past Marozzi.

The other incident of note in the second period was an elbow to Malcolm Lyles’s head that levelled the Viper spark plug in his zone. From that point on, Lyles became a physical force, delivering one crunching hit after another.

Dylan Walchuk made the score 3-0 with a power play goal at 6:31 of the final period, as he converted a nice feed delivered by Dane Muench from behind the Spruce Grove goal line.

Muench returned to action for the first time after suffering a severely dislocated shoulder in the second game of the Westside series, on March 9.

Dustin Fostvelt notched the Saints’ lone goal at 7:44 from the top of the faceoff circle. His wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle zipped through several players and past a screened Halcrow.

The Saints tried to intensify their hitting game in the last two periods, but were out hit 38-25 in the contest. And, on this night at least, they were unable to match the Vipers’ speed.

Still, it’s apparent that Spruce Grove is a well-schooled, balanced team. If they continue to get sterling goaltending from Marozzi and if they can mobilize their forecheck, they will give the Vipers all they can handle.

Game two will be played Saturday in Vernon. If the Vipers win again, the series will shift to Spruce Grove for the remainder of the games. If the Saints win, a third game will be played in Vernon on Sunday night before the teams head to Alberta.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Random note I saw when looking through the athletics site - Over the past few years, Bazin has been involved in a number of hockey camps. Not sure the age groups, skill levels, or audiences targeted at the camps, but in the summer of 2010, he was a coach at the Pavel Datsyuk Hockey Camp in Russia, in 2010-11, he spoke at the Washington Capitals College Hockey Fair in DC, and since 2002, he has owned and managed the Altitide Hockey Camps in Okotoks, AB and Clinton, NY (Hamilton College is in Clinton).

These all seem like good ways to get his name known and promote the program during the offseason in areas outside of the university's normal recruiting areas (which seem to be MA and Ontario with the current team).

Yes, it definitely is, and I'm sure it's helped him with recruiting in one way or another.

Game 7 of the Doyle Cup series is tonight as Spruce Grove defeated Vernon 2-0 last night.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

According to Ryan Clark of the Fargo Forum, former Boston University forward Vinny Saponari is headed to Northeastern next season. Saponari had 18 goals and 46 assists for 64 points in the regular season for Dubuque (USHL).

Clark also mentions Northeastern head coach Greg Cronin is expected to leave the program to take a coaching position in the AHL.

Vernon won 4-2 last night and will now play in the Royal Bank Cup (Canadian Junior A National Championship Tournament) beginning April 30th. Lyles had no points.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

the vernon coach is amazing....

they beat spruce creak, who was number 1 in all of Canada in a 7 game series. they were 56-6 and had only lost 2 games at home all year. Vernon had to beat them 3/4 at their rink to win the Doyle Cup.

Lyles was a force and leads all D in scoring. RBC Cup will be fun to watch and lets hope Vernon can finish it off.

Conderman had another assist last night, but it wasn't enough as Muskegon's season ended. He finished with 2 points in 6 games.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Vernon stands atop the RBC Cup standings in the preliminary round having won their first two games so far. Lyles doesn't have a point in either of the games.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Vernon finished the preliminary round 5-0, and will play in the Semifinals of the RBC Cup on Saturday.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Vernon Vipers had their two-year reign as RBC Champions ended by Pembroke last night, as the Lumber Kings won the Cup 2-0. That completes the year for all incoming recruits.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

What a nice effort by Malcolm!

All the best for him and UML going forward.

Great times ahead for the program.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Another defenseman for next season according to the Heisenberg site.
Zack Kamrass-D - Sioux Falls (USHL) 5'10 187, 12-17-90

Have to like the +15. Basin's first recruit! :)

With Lowell only having lost 2 D-Men to graduation ... and bringing in 5, it'll be interesting to see if someone (multiple?) leaves the program.

So here's how we stand for 2011/2012...

Defense (12):
Senior: Tim Corcoran
Juniors: Chris Ickert, Malcolm Lyles, Colin Wright
Sophomores: Rob Badger, Al Butler, Daniel Furlong, Chad Ruhwedel
Freshmen: William Eiserman, Zach Kamrass, Micki Mihailovich, Colton Saucerman

Forwards (18):
Seniors: Michael Budd, Matt Ferreira, Michael Scheu, David Vallorani,
Juniors: Joe Caveney, Riley Wetmore
Sophomores: Derek Arnold, Nick Curry, Cam Gaudet, Josh Holmstrom, Derek McCoy, Joe Pendanza, Shayne Thompson
Freshmen: Tyler Brickler, Christian Cowles, Mike Conderman, Terrence Wallin, Scott Wilson

Goalies (3):
Junior: T.J. Massie
Sophomores: Marc Boulanger, Doug Carr

So at this point, that leaves us at 33 on the roster.

The class breakdown in 2011:
Seniors: 5
Juniors: 6
Sophomores: 13
Freshmen: 9

And as of right now, we have 2 commits for 2012: G Chris Eiserman, D Corey Scammon (who could be coming in 2013). So we have 30 on the roster for the 2012/2013 season, assuming all of the above come back which I think is doubtful.

Cam Gaudet (F) will also be a Sophmore, that makes 33. Something has to give. Maybe a couple of the incoming defensemen will play another year of junior. It will be interesting to see what the final roster looks like.
