Terrence Wallin scored a goal and added 2 assists in Gunnery's 6-1 win over Loomis Chafee. The game was played outdoors at the UConn Football Stadium as part of Hartford Whalerfest.

Gorman to Friars

5’10”, 170 lb. New Hampton School senior LW Connor Gorman has committed to Providence College for the fall of ’12.

An 8/20/92 birthdate from Shrewsbury, Mass., Gorman is currently the leading goal scorer in New England prep hockey with 35. He shares the overall tie in points with Cushing’s Robbie Baillargeon. Each has 59.

Gorman, who will play a year for Sean Tremblay’s New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs (EJHL) before matriculating at PC, is a bit off the beaten path at New Hampton, but that didn’t stop Friars’ head coach Tim Army from taking a trip up there in early January.

In his second year at New Hampton after coming in as a repeat junior from St. John’s-Shrewsbury last season, Gorman is a tenacious, relentless player who works hard, both with and without the puck. While he’s not the biggest guy, he has speed and is dangerous getting the puck in stride and coming down the wing. Gorman also uses his speed and quickness well on the PK and forecheck. He’ll need to add strength before arriving in Providence.

"His biggest assets are his speed and his quickness," says New Hampton second-year head coach Matt Wright. "Those are the key attributes at the next level. He also has a really good shot. Not only has he been the leader offensively, but he's been the leader in the locker room as well. He's very vocal, and a really positive individual. He leads by example."

UMass-Lowell was also in the hunt for Gorman.

BTW, if you happen to be a young male between the ages of 18-20 this time next year, there are excellent opportunities that await you in Lowell... easy access to a top spot in the line up, play against the top teams in the nation, and play in one of the top facilities in the east. Please contact the hockey office and tell them "yeah, I'm better than the slugs you currently ice" and we'll get on it right away.

Following two lacklustre performances last week, Ferner liked how his team rebounded with a 5-2 win over the host Centennials Tuesday night.

The postage-stamp playing surface of Nicola Valley Arena helped bring some urgency to the Vipers, who were led by a pair of 20-year-olds – first star defenceman Malcolm Lyles and second star forward Bryce Kakoske – each with three-point nights.

“We were a little tentative early, but we got better and started to take the game over,” said Ferner. “Things happen in a hurry in that rink and you’ve got to be ready to make plays.”

Following last Friday’s OT loss to Merritt, Lyles said Tuesday night provided a bit of relief and a measure of revenge, all rolled into one.

“It’s nice to come up with a strong effort against a team that has given us so much trouble,” said Lyles.

The Miami Gardens, Fla. product flattened a Merritt defender on the rush before dishing the puck to Colton Sparrow, who fed Marcus Basara (12th) for a one-timer that beat Lino Chimienti five-hole to tie the game 1-1 at 16:57.

Boy, next year cannot come soon enough for UML! Getting some help from some recycled talent like Lyles, a player who got to log some practice time and minimal game time with a staff like Boston College is necessary. If Lyles can bring some of the attitude, work ethic, and mental toughness exhibited by the kids he played behind at Boston College it can only help. Maine was ripe for the picking and the UML team I saw twice a couple of weeks ago should be able to deliver wins against them.
Lyles and his limited Hockey East experience is CERTAINLY not the answer in totality for what ails UML but his ability to play with and watch the talents that comprise a team like Boston College can only help. We who watched him struggle so much at Boston College all look forward to his catching on with UML next year.

It is amazing how well he is doing and seeing him come into his own. You dont see a dman dominate at the level he is, night in and night out. Another big game last night as Vernon clinched a first round bye in the playoffs. Pro scouts are all over him now and he is getting a ton of looks on that front.

Vernon 4 Trail 2
I was at tonight's BCHL game as Vernon defeated Trail 4-2 in front of 2,191 fans at the Wesbild Centre.

Trail was by far the more physical of the two teams, as the Smokies looked to be trying to intimidate the Vipers by using their size and physical play. This didnt seem to faze Vernon as the Vipers would get there first powerplay of the night late in the 1st. The Vipers struggled getting any real presure, in the dying seconds of the man advantage, Malcolm Lyles carried the play from his own end, through the neutral zone before stepping over the Trail blueline and ripping a quick shot that was stopped by Kiefer Smiley just as the penalty expired, Marcus Basara jumped on the rebound beating Smiley at 16:51 giving Vernon a 3-1 lead re-gaining their two goal lead. Lyles who started and created this goal was rewarded with the lone assist

2nd Period: Some very scrambled play early as both teams had troubles getting things going. David Robinson and Malcolm Lyles would get a two on one just two minutes into the middle frame, Robinson setup Lyles who couldnt beat Kiefer Smiley on the odd man rush


Top Players: (Vernon)

Malcolm Lyles (1 assist) Lyles who has really come into his own the past few months is playing his best hockey of the season. Lyles was once again very strong on the Vipers blueline, looking very good with and without the puck. Carried the play up ice several times, setting up some nice rushes as well as jumping up into the play and getting back into the defensive zone. On one play in the 3rd Lyles jumped back into the play stealing the puck from one Trail player, knocking him down as well as another Smokie all on the same play. Trail had troubles all game trying to stop Lyles when in control of the puck-play. He is without question the best Dman right now, I have seen in several years in the league.

Tremendous...hope he can translate this junior success to the cracking UML top six next season. Keep the strong sponsorship of this kid coming...we love it!
It is so great to see Malcolm flourish in this manner...he will be a welcome addition to the top six defensemen next year hopefully.

Terrence Wallin scored two goals in an 8-5 win over Albany Academy. He now has and 8-10-18 line in 10 games.

What would the probably outcome be for some of the recruits who've already committed if Blaise is indeed done after this year? Mainly Eiserman (G)?

The kids that have signed NLIs (I believe Conderman, Eiserman (D), Wilson, Wallin, Brickler and Saucerman) are kinda stuck, and would have to ask the NCAA to be released from the NLI. Of course, that's dependent on them having chosen Lowell just for the coach, not for the many other possible reasons, and I really hope they chose for the other reasons as well. Scammon (2012 or 2013) and the younger Eiserman have no restrictions on them. I'm assuming nothing will change for the younger Eiserman, as he wanted to play with his brother in college anyway.

The BCHL regular season ended yesterday, and both UML recruits will have their seasons continue in the playoffs. Tyler Brickler's regular season ends with a 24-26-50 in 60 games for Westside, who will be the 4 seed in Interior Conference's playoffs. Malcolm Lyles and Vernon have the #1 seed in the Interior Conference and will have a bye in the first round. Lyles finished the regular season with a 8-22-30 in 54 games for the Vipers.

In the OPJHL playoffs, Scott Wilson and his Georgetown Raiders trail 1-0 after losing the first game of their best of seven series 7-4. Wilson did score for the Raiders.

In the NAHL, Colton Saucerman is currently tied for third on Corpus Christi's roster with 22 points (4-18-22) but has done it in only 28 games, which is 16 games less than the forward he is tied with. Saucerman's point total leads all d-man for Corpus Christi, and is currently tied for 24th amongst all defensemen in the league, even though he has played at least 10 games less than everyone he's behind.

Terrence Wallin now has 21 (8-13-21) points in 11 games
Corey Scammon has 24 points (5-19-24) in 27 games
The regular season ends for both Gunnery and Cushing this weekend.

I would imagine recruit Christian Cowles is injuried. Based on his stat page he has not played a game since 1/13/11, missing 11 straight games.

Seven Viper veterans each collected two awards the team’s annual awards gala Monday night at the Best Western Vernon Lodge

Malcolm Lyles, known as Mr. Excitement among the Viper faithful, was named Top Defenceman and the Fan Favourite. The 20-year-old Miami native will study and play at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell next year.

Congratulations to former River Rat and Georgetown, Mass native Christian Cowles for committing to UMass Lowell. Cowles a 90 birth date, has been playing for the New Hampshire Monarchs (EJHL) with other former River Rats Connor Toomey (Merrimack) and Cody Sharib (Uconn)
Cowles is a great offensive player with great north to south speed and a very good set of hands will arrive in Lowell this upcoming fall. Cowles, was part of what was probably the best U18 River Rats team to date in 2008 the team lost in the state finals and along with Cowles included potential 2011 1st round draft pick Zach Phillips, Steve Whitney( BC) Wade Megan (BU) Mac Bennett ( Michigan, Montreal Draft Pick) to name a few. Cowles becomes the 13th player from that 2008 U18 River Rats team to commit to either a Division 1 team or Major Junior Program. He becomes the 8th 1990 to commit to a Division 1 school and will join a River Rat loaded Hockey East when he arrives on campus this upcoming fall.

Scott Wilson's Georgetown team lost game 2 of the playoffs on Wednesday night, but Wilson didn't play.
