UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Settle down hoky. Take a few breaths into a brown paper bag and maybe take a tranquilizer. Maybe go for a ride in the van to help you relax.

UML fans... congrats. Try not to have unreasonable expectations for this kid because Hoky has a mancrush on him. That's all everyone else is saying. He'll probably be a contributor... anything past that is not something I would bet on.

What he said. Hokydope makes these over the top statements all the time. Have to divide everything he says by at least 7.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

OK then. Can we have our thread back and you guys can go spit at each other somewhere else?

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

For UML fans' sake, I hope you add more to this thread than you did in the other thread after the BC game.

Anyway, I'm happy Lyles will be back in Hockey East and wish him the best at UML. Hope he does well.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

I sure hope this kid delivers. I would hate for leswp to have these great expectations and be disappointed upon showing up to Tsongas.

Not sure why you feel the need to come in here or the other thread (other than to declare just how superior you are to the rest of us serfs) but after reading what you post I am glad you have such a low opinion of me.

I think (speaking only for myself) that if he comes in, contributes, works on the academic side as well as his game, and goes about trying to improve who he is as an athlete, a person and the UML program ... I'll be OK with it.

I have no idea if he's going to be a steal or not, but from the 6 minute video I saw, seems like a smart kid with a good sense of humor, and I can't help but want him to succeed. I suppose we'll see in September how he plays.

Also, giving credit where it's massively due ... Jerry York doesn't make too many mistakes on the recruiting trail, so if he thought that at one point this kid was good enough to play for BC, I think he'll be a good add for Lowell.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Ha, let's see, one involved a game between BC and UML...and the other involved UML receiving a commitment from a former BC player. That's not too hard to figure out, is it?

(other than to declare just how superior you are to the rest of us serfs)

Where did I do that?

but after reading what you post I am glad you have such a low opinion of me.

LOL, ya, my take on Lyles can't compare to the gems you were throwing out there after seeing BC once.

Great perspective, far superior to the blowhards from BC>

You are right about one thing. York liked him enough to bring him in and 2+ years older and a year being guided by one of the top coaches in Candian junior hockey bodes well for Lowell and Malcolm. I am sure Jerry wasnt paying attention at the games he watched during the recruiting process. Must have been on his cell every time he fell down.

This is a quote from his current coach, I know he is not the evaluator JD is but hey, everyone is entitled to one.

Malcolm has steadily improved throughout the season and has become one of the premier defenseman in the league. His skating ability and strength are among the best in the BCHL. His style of play has made him a fan favourite.

I agree with everything UMLFan said. So which "blowhards" are you referring to? And what negative things have people said about Lyles going to UML?

Can't speak to the recruiting process, but I do know Lyles had trouble with it in his brief stint at BC.

I know he is not the evaluator JD

Sure he is, but he also didn't see Lyles play at BC. That's all I was going off of.

Seriously, how many times are you gonna post the same thing?

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

That's an impressive amount of points for a d-man. I think Wallin will put up points here, but Scammon's numbers are definitely a plus.

considering uml's current position maybe there should be a little less in interest in dmen's point production and a little more interest in their ability to play d.

I'm pretty sure that a defenseman that has committed for potentially 2013 really can't help much with the current position that Lowell is in.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Dont let anyone, especially those with little if any knowledge patronize teh UML program. They have picked up a few very good players and will rebound., You dont lose 12 seniors and win Hockey East. Just like todays article on Lyles says, the best days are ahead.... The trend is your friend and trending up is better than peaking at 16

Vernon 2 Nanaimo 1 (Overtime)
I was at tonight's BCHL game as Vernon defeated Nanaimo 2-1 in overtime in front of 1,437 fans at the Wesbild Centre

Four on four Malcom Lyles did all the work going in and around three Clipper players before dishing off to David Robinson in front who tipped Lyles shot just wide of the goal on a great scoring play. Vernon just wasnt getting the bounces tonight

Overtime: The Vipers were heading into their third straight overtime game after knocking off Prince George and Trail, both in overtime over the weekend. Not much action in the opening few minutes before Vernon would get a three on one but back come the Clippers who charged back into the play breaking up the odd man rush as the Vipers were unable to record a shot. Malcolm Lyles big shot from the point was stopped by Charles-Andre Pelletier who had to look behind him to make sure he had the puck. Marcus Basara then cut wide and went hard towards the goal but was stopped by Charles-Andre Pelletier who was very solid all night. When it looked like we were heading to double overtime Kyle Murphy and Malcolm Lyles with some nice passing allowed Lyles to skate in over the Nanaimo blueline, make a quick move and then rip his low shot fivehole past Charles-Andre Pelletier at 4:59 giving the Vipers their third straight victory as Vernon's bench jumped onto the ice. Vernon outshot Nanaimo 4-1.

Top Players: (Vernon)

Malmolm Lyles (Overtime winner) Was Vernon's best player this evening. For the second straight home game, Lyles has been the Vipers best player. Earlier today Lyles committed to play for the University of Massachusetts-Lowell Riverhawks next season carried the play alot tonight, made some nice heads up plays, jumped up into the play, acting like a forward and played well defensively all at the sametime. Lyles was very good one on one and was very hard to knock off the puck tonight. Had a few good scoring chances.

Malcolm Lyles scored with 1.1 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to defeat the Nanaimo Clippers 2-1 on Wednesday.

For the third straight game, the Vipers won in overtime, a trend that concerns Vipers’ head man, Mark Ferner: “We have to bear down as hard in the first period as we do when the game’s on the line. You never know which play is going to make the difference in the game.”

His words nearly proved prophetic after the Vipers were unable to convert several good scoring chances in the first two periods.

On the power play midway through the first period, Kyle Murphy’s sharp angle shot glanced off both posts and out. A few seconds later, he had the same shot from just outside Charles-Andre Pelletier’s crease. This time, Pelletier slid across to rob the Viper centre.

The Clippers had started the game well, registering the game’s first five shots before a Gerry Fitzgerald penalty at 7:13 helped the Vipers turn the tide. However, Pelletier played well throughout the period and the game was scoreless going into the first intermission.

Again, the Clippers started the second period with a strong forecheck, a strategy that resulted in a Mike Domsodi goal at 6:34. Netminder Blake Voth stopped shots by Brodie Jamieson and Victor Newell, but Domsodi collected a juicy rebound and deposited a backhand past Voth.

Nanaimo had chances to increase the lead, with four power plays in the second and third periods, but the Vipers allowed only one scoring chance while down a man. They also came close to scoring shorthanded, but Patrick McGillis missed the top of the net by a couple of inches.

The Vipers showed more urgency in the third period, but were unable to break the goose egg until David Robinson scored with 4:47 remaining in regulation.

Bryce Kakoske made the play, finding a rebound deep in his team’s zone and carrying the puck all the way to the high slot in front of Pelletier. Kakoske’s low shot came off Pelletier, but first Kyle Murphy and then David Robinson made contact and the game was tied.

In the overtime, the Vipers generated four of the five scoring chances, including Lyles’s winner.

In his words, “Kyle won a tough faceoff back to me by our net and I skated it up ice and gave it to Pat McGillis. He got it across their line to the faceoff dot. Somehow he slipped it to me through the defenceman’s skates. I just shot it low and it went in on the far side.”

Lyles, who had a strong two-way game for the Vipers is having a good week. On Tuesday, he committed to the University of Massachusetts-Lowell for next year. Coach Ferner believes that “Malcolm has become one of the premier defencemen in this league because of his athleticism and his growing knowledge of his position. But I believe that we haven’t yet seen the best of Malcolm Lyles; he’s getting better all the time.”

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Much Deserving Scholarship:
Id like to take this time to congratulate, Vernon Vipers defenceman, Malcolm Lyles after hearing yesterday that the 20 yr old d-man has committed to play for the University of Massachusetts-Lowell Riverhawks for next season. Myself along with several other Viper fans all agree Malcolm has really come into his own and is one of if not the most improved player from the start of the season. Lyles came to Vernon after playing the past two season's with Boston College. One of the league's strongest hitters and strongest skaters Lyles is very hard to knock off the puck and very hard to play against. One of the more awkward looking skating styles, Lyles looks alot more comfortable jumping up into the play more and carrying the puck. One of the more stronger Vipers I have seen in many years, Lyles is very strong and very quick. You knew at the start of the season, Mark Ferner would help improve Lyles game and it has showed. Congrats Malcolm and all the best in the upcoming playoffs with the Vipers and your future with the Riverhawks

I was born and raised in Vernon, BC and have been going to Junior Hockey games in Vernon since I was a young child. I purchased my first set of season tickets back in 1990, This being my 20th straight year with season tickets. Over the last 20 years I have missed just 42 home games. Last year (September) I missed my first home game since 2002-03 wich ment my streak of 236 straight Vipers home games came to an end. I worked with the Vipers back in 2003-04 as colour comentator helping out with a few games over the internet. This is my third season doing my Vipers blog

UMLFan, you are right about Jerry York and his ability to recruit talent. He and his staff truly have an eye for what typically translates to high level performance on the ice at the college level. In Malcolm's case it was not for a lack of trying or lack of opportunities to impress. His sophmore year was full of lengthy chances to take hold of a secure position in the top six which for reasons stated previously he was unable to do. For him the right choice was to move on and get to a place where competition would dictate more opportunity to have a playing role which is exactly what he did. By most of what has been provided here by Hockeydad it appears that he has gotten just what he needed...serious playing time to work on his game and his development which he clearly was not able to do at BC because of their deep talent at the defensive position. His future as a contributor at UML looks bright and most of us "fans" of BC wish him all the very best.
On a different note I would love to applaud the work of your goalie who protected the nets in the last two contests against BC home and away. He stood tall and answered the bell in both games in a big way. Your record of wins and losses confounds me after watching the club play twice. Good luck the rest of the way this season and beyond.

hurtin on D now thru 2013. The last 4 recruits on D... The first brought in mid season I would asume for immediate impact, didn't dress last game? the next a small very questionable 93  , next up a 20 year old who has over 150 penalty minutes last two seasons for fighting, that should translate nicely to the college game, how's that penalty kill been going and now a 2 year eligible player basically cut from BC. (For what it's worth Lyles is the best of the 4 and probably better than what you already have.)
Have seen all but the 150 kid play, my question
Is Macdonald trying to lose his job?

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Can't speak about the others but the midseason addition didn't dress because he has a separated shoulder.

You may be right. I haven't seen any of them play but Butler, but I'll reiterate, three of them can't help the defense now anyway. This current defense corp will get better, led by Ruhwedel, going into next season. We'll see what Eiserman, Mihailovich and Lyles do next season.
