UML Fires Coach MacDonald

Re: UML Fires Coach MacDonald

Got to say, good news. Like the guy, but not able to get it done. Can't spend five million on upgrades to an arena and then not put a team on the ice that doesn't get any results.

i dont think marty will hesitate to spend money if there is a coach out there worth it to take the job.

At the very least, should keep the season ticket holders off the fence for another season.

Re: UML Fires Coach MacDonald

Not one NCAA appearance in his tenure at UML, right? Just checking.

Hence the use of the word alright.. and not good.

As others have pointed out, recruits improved and the team had its chances.

It is not like we had a bottom of the barrel team throughout his tenure.

LOWELL -- After 10 years of mixed success, Blaise MacDonald has been fired as the ice hockey coach at UMass Lowell.

Sources say that MacDonald sent e-mails to his players yesterday informing them that he would not be back to fulfill the final year of his contract at UML. An official announcement from the university confirming his departure is expected later Friday.

The River Hawks, who play their home games at the Tsongas Center that just underwent a $5-million renovation by the university, ended their season last weekend with a 5-25-4 record and finished in last place in Hockey East. The five wins were the fewest by a UML team since the 1968-69 Lowell Tech Terriers went 4-9-0.

MacDonald had a 150-178-42 record in 10 seasons at UMass Lowell, including three 20-win campaigns. But the River Hawks never made the NCAA Tournament during those years.

Re: UML Fires Coach MacDonald

I can't imagine in my wildest dreams we could pry MacTavish away from TSN (I'm basing his employment status on Wikipedia)

With Coach MacDonald being plagued by his personal transgressions, is it appropriate to a hire a man with a similar, yet far more devastating history? For me, personally, I would say that a lot of time has passed and it wouldn't affect my thinking of the man, but I am not sure how the powers that be would view that situation. What do you guys think?

Transgessions? He had one DUI (as far as I know) and that was the only negative that I know of against him personally. Let's not make him out to be anything more than that please.

Given that the University had "Craig MacTavish Night" and honored him during a game this past season, I'm thinking that "the powers that be" are fine with him.

Re: UML Fires Coach MacDonald

Just like Tim Army in Providence, they announced that Blaise stepped down as coach, not that he was fired.

In the professional world, you will rarely find a situation where a person in relatively speaking terms "of significant power" would be labeled as truly "fired" in a press release. One can spin this all he/she wants but the truth of the matter is that MacDonald and Army were "asked to leave" and these "resignations" were not voluntary.

I'll have more thoughts later.
