Re: UML 2011-2012 Thread: Part II

BU. class personified.
I don't know. Much as some of the big schools have a way of adjusting things for their players I can't see that this is the norm and just coming out now. I kind of feel bad for Jackie- having met him, however briefly, I cannot see that he would think this stuff is OK.

BU has certainly a recent reputation for players who are on the borderline... I don't know if he just likes the aggressive personalities or he thinks they can control them but they seem to have problems with certain "boys" being "boys"... I dont think a lowell kid is a BU kid... Dont get me wrong... Appreciate the talent but BU certainly has a type of player they're looking for.

I do like how the BU paper had it out immediately and that he's already suspended. Seem to be handling it above-board, etc, which is nice.

As much as I might loathe Parker's antics sometimes, I also don't think this is something he'd even remotely like or condone.

It also tends to make me proud that either by careful recruitment (or by luck) we don't run into these character issues nearly as much as some other schools.

Lowell drops to 7 after this weekend's split.
Gotta admit, it amuses me to see that Lowell is above BU in the HE standings, they've won the season series over BU ... but are still behind in the national rankings. Oh well, still love where this program is! :D

Lowell also falls two spots in the INCH rankings to 8th, one spot behind BU.

I'll take #2 in the PWR over #7 in the USCHO poll this late in the season any day of the week :p  Oh yeah, we are above BU there..;)

Re: UML 2011-2012 Thread: Part II

So just looking at this hellacious stretch that we've been wondering about (and I'm going to include PITA PC) ... are Lowell fans happy so far with a (record-wise) mediocre 2-2 (including 1-2 at home)?

As this season has played out, we all knew this stretch (starting with Maine, through the end of the regular season) was going to be the toughest part of the schedule. I'm not all that thrilled with the 1-2 at home, but there's no denying that this team, even with the two losses, is playing pretty good hockey. I thought they took it to both Maine and BU in their losses, but just couldn't finish the chances they had. In that respect, I think Lowell got a bit lucky that BU didn't finish their chances on Saturday night either. Carr had one bad game, but I loved his rebound performance on Saturday night. I honestly thought on Friday night that the freshmen seemed to struggle, like the pressure finally got to them, but then Wilson stepped right back up on Saturday night, while Wallin had a couple of great plays (as did Suter on the defensive side).

I can see these final four games going in every possible directions, from 4-0 to 1-3 (I can't see Lowell losing all the games). I believe one win gives Lowell fans their first home playoff series in a decade, but at this point, it's beyond just that from a fan's perspective. I'm looking at the NCAAs as well, not that I ever thought I'd be typing/talking about that this year.

At this point, it would appear a pretty safe bet that a) Lowell will host a series and b) their competition will be one of UNH, UMass, NU or PC. UNH has played one more game than all of those teams, and PC is currently 6th, but having two games against red-hot BC and then playing Lowell makes for a very very tough end of season stretch for the Friars.

Re: UML 2011-2012 Thread: Part II

Random variation, Monty. They are good teams and home ice isn't worth a ton in hockey. Would love to do better, sure... but its not worth worrying about.

More to the point is we really went a stretch without playing the tough teams... playing down the stretch I think these games are incredibly instructive to the coach and the players as to what tactics and techniques will be needed in mid-late March if we should get ourselves there. Especially with the speed and pacing of the BU and Maine games. I don't think Lowell has been ready for that as such... those games were played at high speed with less room for breakdowns... and we did break down in places. We still had the effort but I think those games need to be learning experiences because the rest of the way out (HEA championship weekend... NCAAs) most of the games will look like that.

I think things are setting up pretty well for us... just have to make the appropriate adjustments and we'll be fine.

Re: UML 2011-2012 Thread: Part II

From a mathematical standpoint, it's true that home-ice isn't a significant difference, but try telling that to the Red Wings. But from a players perspective, it's much easier walking to the rink, settling into your own routine and having a team meal rather than a 5+ hour bus ride to Maine that could await them.

I think the deciding factor in the final 4 games will be Cannatta and Beaudry. Both played very well and with "limited" offense in front of them, a goalie is going to have a steal a 1-0, 2-1 kind of game. If Lowell can bury a puck early on, I think both teams could be in trouble. Example being the Providence game. Friars scored a couple minutes into the game and from then out they clogged up their 100 ft of the ice and just frustrated Lowell. Granted it was Lowell's 5th game in 8 days, but PC just dominated their defensive side of the ice. Beaudry made the big saves when he needed to and they more held on to win rather than winning decisively. I can see Merrimack doing the same thing. Neither team has the offense to play catch-up so the first goal will be big in the final 4 matchups. I would personally be surprised if Lowell did not finish the season 3-1/4-0. Lowell is the better team in all scenarios and if they show up with the same effort they have been giving they will show that.

Call ripley's. They'll never believe this. Any doubt this kid isn't rookie of the year?
HE ROTY is already clinched. Not sure what the competition is nationally, but he has to be on a very short list. Would be great to see the national ROTY's coming out of HE AND the Merrimack Valley in recent years (Da Costa 3 years ago).
