UMD 2010-11 Season

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Couple of questions I don't really want to ask, but why isn't Friddy wearing the "A" anymore and is she 100% healthy? She just doesn't look like she's playing with everything she's got yet.

Without knowing any details, it seems that she's not nearly 100% .. she's not getting into corners like she used to (usually) and not beating anyone to the puck. There was talk about her working on her strength this off-season and maybe the other training suffered.. just speculation though.

Add: (the board's messed up and ate the following before, putting it up again)

It could also be that Friddy's having trouble transitioning to the 'Torpedo' also.. I really doubt she's ever played anything other than a regular forward spot in her hockey life.. I actually hope that's the real answer.

The only shot I got of Winberg's game winning goal.. the ref was in the way when she put it in..

Friddy has reinjured her shoulder again. She did have surgery this off season, but rehurt it like a month into the season. She is playing in the "defenseman" slot, like Wong is, on the second line, and is obviously in some pain.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

dhmn,

Just wanted to say that your photos are wonderful! I especially like the Winberg image as it seems to capture the intensity and passion of the game. Also, congrats on the sweep this weekend, I look forward to seeing your view of future games.

So excited that my Beloved Bulldogs swept the Gophers!!! Awesome job girls....wish I could have been there to watch!!!.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Great weekend for the 'dogs - way to go! However much of the fun of yesterdays game vanished when I watched Ms. Grey go head first into the end boards at speed. I prey she is OK.

And Schmoe - Great Pic's - thank you for posting your linked shots. Great shots of some Gophers also so MnTC fans will want to check them out.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

dhmn - Thank you for posting your photos. Duluth fans are lucky to have such talented folks posting their shots. Appreciate it.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

All credit in the world to the Dogs for two great performances against the Goofs!!! For the first 5 minutes or so of that first period in game one it looked like a replay of the UCONN series!! I think the SOG was like 11-0! Just a few comments . . .

Haley Irwin is such the real deal. Skate, shoot, puck control, pin-point passing . . . and ahem, passion for the game The opposition cannot give her an open look or she will bury it.

Harss and Santa both looked really sharp . . . is that comforting, or what?? With their teammates flying and defedning so well in front of them it's going to take some sharp-shooting and/or breakaways to capitalize. wow!

Winberg's game winner on Friday was a thing of beauty. Harss' head's up pass to Holmlov, the perfect feed ahead to Winberg and then the finish . . . and a good example, I think, of the opportunities a torpedo mindset can produce.

Speaking of Holmlov. . . did she play like a possessed woman on Saturday or what?? She was all over the ice and nearly single handedly kept the Gophers in their own end on several occasions.

I'm glad to hear that despite the blood and cuts that Tara's injury is not "serious". I couldn't see it as I was at the opposite end of the arena when it happened, but it sure sounded horrific. I'm hard pressed to think of any other time coach Miller went on the ice to check out a player.

We could go to games the rest of the season and not see two more exciting, hard fought, evenly played games. Kudos to both teams.

Well done Dogs!!!!!!!!!!!!

U-M-D!!!!!!! :D:D

She has taken her game up a couple notches since her sophomore season. Personally, I really enjoyed her delay of game penalty.:D

Either one could have been seriously injured because they both hit the boards very hard. It was a good sign when Gray was outside the boards at postgame.

Here I disagree; I think you will see better games. Minnesota is not a good offensive team right now. They have potential, but that doesn't always translate onto the scoreboard, like the Wayne St game or game 2 vs UND. I wasn't that impressed by UMD defensively. Yes, they have two strong goalies, but their team D was nowhere close to what it has been in recent years. I'm sure it will get better over time, but I think Fridfinnson for one is being played out of position. She is an excellent wing, but seemed pretty vulnerable when back as a defender. The problem won't show up against overmatched opponents that won't be able to get the puck out of their own zone. Minnesota was too ragged to take advantage, but I think better offenses like Wisconsin and Ohio State will do more damage. The question when you play those teams is if the Badgers' goaltending and the Buckeyes' team D will be able to keep your offense in check. So you might see some very entertaining shootouts down the road.

Was this due to an icing? I find the new rule even more dangerous than the old and I will be shocked if it doesn't lead to an increase in injuries.

It was a possible icing situation, but I think that the same play would have resulted under the old rule. Both players were racing for the puck, but the Gopher player got her stick on it before it reached the goal line extended. In general though, I agree that the new rule adds more risk with very little reward.

I see what you're saying but . . . there's never (rarely) that perfect game. UMD can be better and so can MN. But . . . no one ever plays it perfectly and hardly ever do two teams play to their top potential against one another! So, from a fan perspective we saw two teams very evenly matched even though neither played perfectly to their potential. I thoroughly enjoyed both games and it's not that often I leave any arena feeling that way. They were very exciting, tension I guess I'm the kind of fan that wants to see great competition.

To your point about Friddy . . . I think part of it is that she's hurting. And the team D is not going to be what we've seen in the past because the system isn't designed to be a real shut-down type of style. The D in this system would seem to be based more on offensive control. Miller has basically said as much.

It's going to be an excting season . . . I doubt there's controversy in that! :) Good to see you ARM.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

My point was more that I think teams like Wisconsin and Ohio State match up better against UMD and will put on some offensive displays that should be fun to watch. For example, look at the caliber of players the Badgers have on their 3rd line. Always good to see you as well.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Curious to see how the series pans out this weekend in Bemdiji with Laroque and Irwin gone for pre 4-Nations cup business and Tara out for at least a week after that stunning display of skater meets boards on Saturday.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Will you have your Europeans all weekend, or stated another way, does anyone know if it is just the Canadians who miss all of the first weekend in November?
