UMass Lowell Offseason Thread '13: In Norm We Trust

Re: UMass Lowell Offseason Thread '13: In Norm We Trust

Seems like a solid hire. Plenty of assistant coaching experience, will probably be very energetic for his first HC position. Al Skinner, while a big name in the college basketball community, may not have been the right fit for a brand new D-1 program. They need energy and someone who can get players excited, even when they're going to probably get killed by Louisville, Cincy, etc.. Al Skinner doesn't come to mind when I think of "energy."

great stuff and exciting to see it close up. Marty has done a fantastic job and it's only the beginning. Onward and upward for UML
It really is.

I'll admit, I was a bit nervous when Marty came on, since I have this inherent distrust of politicians. I knew he'd be better than what he had, but then again, that wouldn't take much work.

But what he's been able to do at Lowell is astounding.

Off topic, but there's a great poll up on the Sun's site, asking which is the biggest challenge facing Lowell as they move to D1.

The options are winning, recruiting or fan support.

My answer was recruiting. It'll be really tough to recruit players (for at least two years, maybe even three) that are willing to come into this situation. After that, it should be easier. For me, step one is recruiting for anything. If you do that right, winning and the fan support come after...

I think it's managing expectations and try not to make them outsized, especially if the bandwagon effect continues

The UML basketball team will also be at Michigan about two week later. The River Hawks will open the 2013-2014 season -- and play the program's first-ever Division 1 game -- at the University of Michigan on Nov. 8.
