UMass Lowell 2026-2027: Is this the new Norm?

Last year, we brought in Jay Ahearn, the highest goal scorer available in the transfer portal, who had 19 goals. Luke Shipley was a top 5 goal scoring Defensemen from the WHL. And do we really need to get into how skilled Diego Buttazzoni is? Even cinnamoroll said last year, we had the best CHL recruits coming in comparison to the other HE schools.

I could provide plenty more examples, but the point is that we bring in players with proven scoring ability and plenty of talent. As another poster, also, mentioned, the issue isn’t necessarily the talent we have; it’s how we utilize it. Are we putting players in the right roles, creating the right line combinations, and giving them the freedom and opportunity to play to their strengths?

You can have all the talent in the world, but if you aren’t maximizing it through the system, player utilization, and line combinations, you’re not going to get the results you should. That’s the issue we should be questioning.

Special teams certainly showed out. 2 SHG is nice, and Macdonald continues his hot streak.

Was nice to see them come from behind twice, and when Colgate tied it in the third, they responded.

Hopefully they can get the sweep tomorrow
 
I wasn’t wild about them trying to get an ENG from within their own zone and icing the puck. I think they did it last night too and Colgate made them pay tonight.

We’ve been spoiled with great goaltending during Norm’s tenure, but a sub .900 SV% for the team just isn’t going to cut it in Hockey East.

10 wins might be a stretch at this point.
 
Was sent this by someone at the UML soccer game today:

“Hockey team was sitting behind me during the first half of the soccer game, here’s what I picked up:
• They’re all tired of Norm's coaching; They say he brainwashed the defensemen into being terrible
• They all see the fire norm posts and comments on twitter
• Some of them already talking about the transfer portal
• All wished they had Billy Riley as their coach instead”

At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if half or more entered the portal. The program continues circling the drain with no end in sight and complete inaction from the administration.

Update:

As I look forward to finding anything else to do other than go on Friday night ... on a different note, while the hockey team circles the drain ... the field hockey team goes into the AE playoffs as the 1 seed and will host #5 Vermont Tuesday in the semifinals. Vermont already beat Lowell 1-0 earlier this year, up in Burlington. Maine hosts Albany in the other semifinal (and Lowell beat both of those teams already this year).

Men's Basketball starts up tonight, with their annual drubbing of Rivier. Probably the most talented D1 team we've ever had, so at least there's that to look forward to.

Easy road trip to Merrimack on Thursday night for MBB as well. MC is perennially good under Joe Gallo, but did have a loss this morning to App State, so it could be a good test for both teams.
