UMass Lowell 2025-2026: Youth will be served

The biggest question mark for today's game has nothing to do with Lowell. Alex Tracy is one of the best goalies in the nation, but played in the Spengler Cup. He had to travel yesterday from Switzerland to California. Will he be in net for MSU today? What kind of shape will he be in after that much travel? If he's not in net, or is very fatigued, then Lowell's chances improve quite a bit. If he's not jet-lagged and is ready to go, then Lowell has a tough task ahead of them. We'll find out when warmups start in about 6 hours.
 
The rest of Hockey East is wishing UML the best out there. The league needs wins against teams like Minnesota State to boost the conference as a whole. If your team that scores 4 or more shows up, you will get a win. If the one that gets 0 or 1 comes then a loss results. It is hard to pinpoint Lowell; they either have trouble to score at all or load the net.

I decided to do a little research on our goalies after a conversation with someone, comparing the amount of goals we score with each of them in net, compared to the number allowed. I converted the former into a number per 60 minutes, so that it matches GAA. (Similar to Run Support for a Pitcher in baseball)

When Austin Elliott is in net, Lowell is scoring 2.74 goals per 60 minutes and allowing 2.55. (29 scored, 27 allowed + 1 empty netter allowed) (I did not factor the ENG into the GAA)
When Samuel Richard is in net, Lowell is scoring 1.55 goals per 60 minutes and allowing 2.72. (8 scored, 14 allowed + 2 empty netters allowed)

Elliott has allowed 2 goals or less 7 times in 12 games, going 3-3 with 1 no decision in those games (Lowell lost the no-decision).
Richard is 1-0 when he doesn't allow a goal, and 0-4 with 2 no decisions when he does (both Lowell losses).

The defensive numbers are similar, but the offense is clearly more of an issue when Richard is in there. The question is - why? With Elliott in there, they should be a slightly above .500 team by the numbers. Richard is doing his job, but the rest of team is letting him down, leading to the poor record.

I’ve seen Samuel Richard play as a goaltender for the UNB Reds in Fredericton over the last three years. He’s a winner and very strong under pressure. I think your coach doesn’t fully trust him, which is unfortunate—the team would be in a better position if he did.
 
Good win to start the year. Anyone rooting for one team or the other to take the second game? Figure an at-large is out of reach so was thinking Yale
 
Gotta hand it to them- that was a great win against a solid team. Felt like they kept things simple and didn't make the same mistakes that plagued the first half. Maybe, just maybe, a sign of things to come in 2026?

Interestingly the magic number for Lowell isn't 4, it's worse. It's three. Credit to the program for noting this in the pre-game notes yesterday.

They're now 7-1 if they score three or more goals, 0-10 when they scores 2 or less.

On the other side, they are 2-7 when they allow 3 or more, and a disappointing 5-4 they allow 2 or less. Norm's record is an astounding 236-38-30 overall when allowing 2 or less, so the 5-4 record this year stands out even more.

So yeah, 3 is the magic number.

The number 3 is going to define this team. This time scored 2 and lost.
 
The team that scores first wins most of the time anyway, but once the other team scores first against this Lowell team, you know the game is already over. It’s deflating.

On average, the team that scores first wins about 70% of the time. Under Norm, Lowell has won 76.6% of the time when scoring the 1st goal of the game, 9th best in the nation over that span.

This was probably their best weekend of the season. They played a phenomenal game on Friday to bear the #14 team in the nation. On Saturday, they actually played a very good game, but when they made a poor play St. Cloud was right there to pounce on it and score. But please, keep up this shtick, because Norm isn't going anywhere.
 
When Lowell plays BU next weekend, BU will have a 17 year old on their roster as Tynan Lawrence (Muskegon, USHL) has joined the Terriers. He will be 7 years younger than some of our seniors.

Per your stats, Scott, Lowell's win rate actually does seem pretty good all-time when giving up the first goal, but this year has certainly not reflected that

So what you’re saying is below .500 hockey is the new “Norm”?
