UMass Lowell 2025-2026: Youth will be served

Wonder what that means for ticketing for the Lowell away game at Lowell. :)
It will be interesting to see if NU gets the Lowell bench or not. No way the locker rooms change. Lowell season ticket holders likely don't get their own seats either. Some things
like these need to happen to make things more equitable for NU.

The season opener, Lowell came out flying. Last night, they came out flat. Western Michigan took it to us hard and it was 2-0 quickly. Only five shots each in the first and second periods. They had moments where they seemed to come alive, but damned if WMU didn't just shut it down. I don't know the last time I saw a Bazin team give up so many odd-man rushes, and WMU could have had a couple more (the breakout on the penalty kill that they couldn't get the puck to the guy coming out of the box is a good example). One other note, I now know what other fans felt like when they played us when we were actually competing for stuff. We couldn't get the puck into their zone for most of the third, they did a great job defending us. Editing to add this part: in the Thursday Sun, Bazin noted that this was a quick team ... he was spot on. WMU seemed to skate around us at times.

Hoping for a better result tonight, we showed we can compete with them over the last two periods. Let's see what happens.

Very impressed with the Western Michigan team. Quick, fast and they transition very quickly once they get the puck. They don't make a lot of mistakes. I though the Hawks hung tough, they had their chances. A lot of missed opportunities by both teams. Great job by the PK killing off all 7 penalties. 😲 Needless to say, they need to clean that up. Hoping for the best tonight.

This game isn’t competitive. Lowell hasn’t played well at all since the home opener. I know these guys are defending national champions but I expected better from this team. They still can’t score.

That was a massive step backwards for Lowell last night. We didn't even look like we belonged on the same ice. Disappointing performance.

Agree, totally out classed. It looked like one team still trying to figure things out and the other at mid-season form. Western did a great job in their defensive zone. It seemed like every time Lowell brought the puck in Western would just send it right out, usually to a speedy forward. Their transition game was impressive. I felt bad for the goaltenders last night. The only positive was the PK (11 for 11) this weekend.

Of course, the bad news is they had 11 penalties. :)

Road trip upcoming to an 0-5 Mercyhurst squad that was also among the worst teams last year. Hopefully a pair of get-right games. If not...

We're on to Cincinnati........ There's no silver linings obviously but we need to remember that was the first back-to-back in D1 for the Freshmen who are still getting conditioned to this level, and Kilcullen and Classon weren't supposed to play as much as they did. August was a last minute decision after Tnias couldn't go, which bumped Sean into a regular shift. Not that I think it would've changed the results but let's see how they look in Erie.

Not hockey related, but Lowell picked fourth in the America East Men's Basketball preseason rankings, and they even gave us one first-place vote. Which is shocking considering this team is almost completely new and has even more questions than Lowell hockey did going into the season. Unfortunately, the women's team was picked last.

Going back to the Gill and Merrimack issue...
it’s a veeeery small window. if you get paid roughly no more than $70k you can get probably 2 years of eligibility. there’s maybe 6 of them

think about it this way- if the rule change happened a year earlier, these guys would’ve been freshman last year. people have called it not punishing players for their 20 year old decisions, but reality is this was punishing them for a decision at 14/15. if they still have eligibility left, they’re lucky and i won’t begrudge them that opportunity.

plus Gill played for Bridgeport when he was in the AHL, which was roughly equivalent to a D3 school playing a D1 schedule. they stunk. college is definitely an upgrade
Interestingly, this is now crossing sports as a major coach in NCAAB wasn't happy about G-Leaguers now committing to play college hoops. Tom Izzo spoke about this yesterday (ESPN article in the link).

Per the NCAA's Division I manual, any athlete who has been compensated as a professional beyond "actual and necessary expenses" -- a category that includes health insurance, meals, lodging and transportation -- cannot play college basketball.
The murkiness presented by the name, image and likeness and revenue share eras have made the line between professional and amateur grayer than it has ever been.

FWIW, I agree with Izzo.

Why does Lowell schedule 3 D3 games?
