The best ones were in open ice/center ice where he would just work low and come up under a player and launch him into space. Seeing his reaction everytime, skating by and laughing was priceless.
There was no place to hide with that small center ice at the Tully.

LOL @ flagship. They actually have "flagship campus" in their tv ads now. Looks like they're a tad nervous out in Amherst. Can't wait until that time in the future when Lowell beats them in bball.
Wow...a tough night for Amherst as Vermont defeated the Minutemen 11-1.

What a shame. Looks like the "flagship" sank!

Their hockey thread on that basketball message board site is going to be a fun read.

Yikes indeed. But Umass Hoops has dutifully provided Amherst's new hockey marketing campaign that is sure to fill the Mullins Mausoleum on game nights.

UMass Amherst Minutemen, "We're a laughingstock, but it's in the best college hockey league in America."

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March

OK - I just saw the replay for the third time... maybe, just maybe the skate in the crease had a slight impact on Boyle.
They showed the overhead replay at the game after it was ruled no goal. I didn't see much based on that. Jeff Jackson went wild on the ND bench after seeing it and was screaming at the refs. There may have been a riot if the Hawks ended winning the game. The fans really gave it to the officiating crew as they left the ice at the end of the game.

A nice job by the Alumni group with the pre-game receptions. It was good to see Marty Meehan at the game Thursday game.

UMass Amherst what a joke!!! They played three different goalies tonight.

Those flagship ads crack me up. If you are really a flagship you don't need to label yourself.

You could hear the UML chant over the radio after the goal. (when it was still covering the game)

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March

Loved to watch Lopi but he doesn't hip check like Lopi did
Man oh man - those hip checks were classic!

Smith, Lauria and Gambardella are becoming a very very special line for UML. 2 freshmen and 1 sophomore- oh mama! They are good
Agreed - a fun line to watch.

I do not blame their coach - he had every right to be livid. While technically the skate was just barely in the crease, it really did not impact Boyle any more than a normal screen. But enough on that subject… I am still relieved the goal was called back.

Really?

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March

I think Boyle has been playing better in net with regard to controlling rebounds. He has become a bit more "sticky" - in a good way of course. Having never played ice hockey, I cannot comment on his positioning as mentioned by others. Overall, my instinct tells me he is playing a little bit better now than the start of the season. With that said, I would have expected to have seen the 3rd goalie - Kalkaja - in at least one of the games by now.

Mildly better, I'd say. He benefits greatly from the defensive support the rest of the team provides and the success of the offense in general. He's great at letting in soft goals and leave rebounds in front for second chances. The wins, in large part, are in spite of him.

I'm not about second guessing the coach, as Boyle clearly the best option Lowell has, or he wouldn't be given the starts. That's just mildly depressing and puts more pressure on the rest of the team to preform and succeed, which they are doing, it's just not a recipe for long-term success.

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March

Judging by the score I thought they were playing without a goalie.

That has to be so demoralizing for the team.

I know that USCHO board participation does not a fanbase make but one has to really wonder how much support there is out there in Amherst that not even the diehards have an active thread here. I know they've got that thread on the bball message boards but even there, there's maybe 4-5 posters. Even in Lowell's darkest times, we always had a thread here with a decent amount of activity.

And part of what annoys folks about them and leads to little to no sympathy for their team's performance on Lowell fan's part, in my mind, is the mightier and higher than thou attitude they have, flagship this and flagship that. Let's face it, from day one Lowell was the hockey school and they're the bball school (who knows what the future may bring if Lowell bball can ever rise to higher level of play in DI). They always complained about how they were superior, even trying to get their first ever Hockey East game against Lowell at Amherst and the league said no, it's at Tully as Lowell is the established team and has the tradition. It probably killed them that for years the league had UMA and UML on the standings and everything official and it wasn't until just a few years ago the league, for some reason, dropped the hyphen on Amherst. It only fed into the ego even more as prior to that, it kept them in check a little as the league made sure both UMass schools were equally identified.

That program is just in such a tailspin it isn't even funny. Can't wait for the games with them later in the year and all the entertainment that will be found on their message board.

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March

I watched some of the Notre Dame game and came away impressed with your team in two areas: face-offs and defensive zone coverage. Plus, you guys are really hard to play against. Physical and gritty and not afraid to go into the dirty areas to win battles. I realize that comes from playing in HE but it is a testament to your coach and program. You will be a very tough out in the NCAA tournament.

We're looking forward to playing you guys next Saturday. It will be a measuring stick for us and whether or not our early season success is real. Of course before we face you, we have a somewhat important game against that school across the river from us on Tuesday. :)

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March

On the NBCSN broadcast Pierre Maguire mentioned multiple times that NHL teams are taking notice of Norm Bazin's success. It makes sense, but has anybody else heard any rumors about this?

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March

Have to say I am really impressed with the way UML is playing and how Bazin and the entire program responded to Hellebuyck's early departure. While Hellebuyck was a great goalie it's obvious this season you guys had a little more going for you than just one guy. Coming into the season with two goalies without a minute of NCAA action between them and you are 5-0-1 in Hockey East play and have scored 10 more goals than any other HE team overall. Minnesota might have the flash of 47 NHL draft picks but you guys are the most solid unit Notre Dame has played this season. Wanna trade your top two coaches for Jackson and Pooley? I'd do it in a minute.

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March

No thank you. I think I can remember more than one fore Pooley post :p

Nice to see polite discourse in here. My thought reading all this? Last yr it took forever for the team to hit its stride. Was looking to have a rough beginning of the season this yr. Pleasantly surprised.

Haven't heard any rumors about the NHL. I know that is the dream for some folks but I can't imagine doing that. At one point Mr was talking to someone about the NHL- the travel is ridiculous. >100d a yr if I recall.

yeah... and young families and all that... the last coach I'm aware of that took an NHL job (former No Dak coach?) ended up coaching US juniors (USHL?) after a stint as an NHL assistant. While Bazin may force us to open the checkbook, I can't imagine anybody that smart trading away a reliable gig which is going to net him serious dollars for years to come.

edit: that is to say, a college gig... those are far more stable than the pros
