UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

Lowell needs 3 points this weekend to be guaranteed a 1st round bye. A split still gives them a good shot at a bye, but they'll need some help. Anything less than that, and in all likelihood we'll all be heading to Tsongas the following weekend to watch Lowell host a 1st round series.

Of course, 4 points would be even better, and big a huge boost in the Pairwise as well. :D

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

Getting out shot 14-4 in the third, I guess he thinks Lowell should have scored 4 times with their 4 SOG. ;)

I'm saying it seemed like Lowell had a bunch of opportunities and blew those chances. Just because BC had more shots in the 3rd doesn't mean they had better opportunities. It's not always about "statistics"..

Another thing I'd like to add. The past few games I've gone to, it seems like the team can't freaking pass a puck. Embarrassing.

No, but BC did have just as many chances--probably more--to win. Lowell definitely had some chances to win but you can't say they "should" have won based off the 3rd period.

Well I thought this would be a little more fun a few weeks ago but considering UML's fall from grace as well as UVM's....you guys suck...worse then us:o and the Cats will no doubt maybe possibly eek out a sweep, or Lowell will, or they will split...

Campbell missing that wide open shot was huge.

Huge weekend for Lowell coming up. Can't wait.

Chalk talk with the coach tomorrow morning at 7:30. RSVP is still open for STH's.

Set of articles on the Top 100 NHL prospects in the NCAAs. This list includes both drafted and free agent players. They've been revealing 10 at a time as they've gone along. They've done 41-100 so far, and not one Lowell player yet.

If Lowell was in the NHL that might be a problem. ;) :D

Did anyone go to the chalk talk?

I did. They had around 15 people for the event. Toured the facility, saw a video breakdown of Vermont and got the X's and O's on the weekend series and had a Q&A with Coach Bazin.

Did anyone ask a question on recruiting?

Did anyone ask a question on recruiting?

Yeah, a couple questions were asked that had to do with recruiting. I'll do my best to paraphrase the question/answer (it was really early, I was still half asleep)

1. Question about getting top local recruits like Eichel. Guy mentioned how packed the BU game was, and what having every game like that could do. Bazin said that Eichel wouldn't even return their call. Noted that Eichel was good for the league - he brought attendance up everywhere he played, and that's good. He went on to say that they're not going to get the top guys, and that he's okay with that. They're focused on the older, mature kids who are looking to play good hockey and get a great education. He said they'd love to get more kids from Chelmsford and Billerica, but that they're going to find their guys wherever they are. He pointed out Olli, who hails from northern Finland. A big city, but remote. Said Olli missed his flight and it took two days to get the next one.

2. Question about next year's class. Lowell has (listed) 2 D and 5 F coming in, and only 2 D and 1 F outgoing. Asked about roster attrition. Bazin said that they sit down with each player and discuss their standing on the team. He said if a kid thinks he's a top 9 guy, and the coaches think he's a 12-15 guy, then they have to have a conversation.

3. Question about recruiting for 2016 and beyond. Bazin didn't really give any solid answers. He did say that lots of teams have recruits for the next few years because they're recruiting high school sophomores. and that the earlier recruiting is why we're seeing so many teams having recruits for 2016, 2017 and even 2018.

That was really it for recruiting. Other tidbits that were asked about included the practice arena (no firm timetable, Bazin didn't seem optimistic that it would be done within the next four years), scholarships (Bazin said there are only about 5 guys will full rides, the rest of the 18 scholarships are split up), Notre Dame possibly leaving Hockey East (he's heard the rumors, he doesn't get into all that. Hockey East will thrive regardless) and the goalie situation (praised Boyle's effort this year. Said that they don't need him to be another Carr or Hellebuyck, just be better than the guy across the ice. Said he's brought a lot to the team in a position where they were depleted).

It was a fun event. Props to the hockey department for running it.

Thanks for the writeup Patronick. Sounds like it was a good experience. If they do this again next year, it sounds like it was worth the effort to attend.

Never said it was a problem. I just find things like that interesting (how others see the talent on the team). I'm pretty sure there will be a player or two on that list as it gets lower.

Thanks man, it's appreciated. I do want to make it to one of these, but 7:30 is tough when I have to be in the office around 8.
