UMass Lowell 17/18 Season Thread: 21 Year Old Freshman Eating BU's Lunch

Re: UMass Lowell 17/18 Season Thread: 21 Year Old Freshman Eating BU's Lunch

Lowell got some help on the out-of-town scoreboard tonight with Merrimack beating Maine in overtime and Vermont beating Providence.

Vermont took 3 out of 4 points from Providence this weekend. The league is crazy this season.

Former River Hawk Carter Hutton with a 1-0 shutout over Scott Wilson and the Sabres tonight.

Not giving up on home-ice for the playoffs yet. Just realized we haven't played a road playoff game since Bazin started here. That's pretty amazing.

The standings are a cluster right now. 4-6 is separated by 2 points, with BU at 22 (19 played), Maine at 21 (19) and Lowell at 20 (18). BU and Lowell have 10 wins currently, Maine has 9, which is important because Lowell split the season series against both those teams, so the next tie-breaker is wins in league play.

League games remaining:
BU: UMass, @ UConn, @ Merrimack, UVM (2)
Lowell: @ BC, @ UMass, @ PC, PC, @ Mack, Mack
Maine: @ PC, @ UNH, BC, @ BC (2)

BU has the easiest remaining, Maine the toughest.

I know it is short notice, but I have an extra ticket for tonight. If interested text me at 603 997 1989. I get to the arena at 5:30.

It wouldn't shock me if they play to the level of Almost In College

This tweet may indicate Sean Cleary is going to be the goaltender for tonight's game:

The tweet has no relevance to anything. They've put pictures of players in those tweets who were out with injuries before (Folin and Berisha earlier this season to name two). They just pick a different player to use each game.

Good to know

Pretty blah game overall. AIC had a lot more odd-man rushes than I think Bazin would have liked. We did have a couple of breakaways of our own though.

But always good to get a win. If it wasn't for the win by UMass last night, we could have played the best and worst teams in Hockey East this weekend, instead it's #1 and #10, both on the road.

Well that was fun for a Tuesday night. Raced home from work, got in for a butchered anthem, drank 5 beers, heard the UML band try out some new tunes, watched UML kick some ***, went out for Mexican food and was in bed by 10:30. Hawks looked pretty crappy first half of first period but but once they got their act together it was off to the races. AIC looked basically like the fastest most skilled high school team ever.

I thought it was a boring game too. It was nice to see Lowell get a win and shutout, but again, very little sustained time in the offensive zone for Lowell. Only 22 SOG against AIC?

BC just got shutout on Monday, I expect they will come out flying Friday.

Re: UMass Lowell 17/18 Season Thread: 21 Year Old Freshman Eating BU's Lunch

Well, they played to AIC's level especially during the ten minutes or so of the 1st period. They didn't get burned for it but they should be putting up at least 35+ plus shots on a team like AIC. No real buzzing of the net they just built a lead and grinded one out.

I'm still not sure sure how a school like AIC has Divison 1 hockey its not a cheap sport to operate. It just does not seem like a good allocation of resources for such a small school.

They are always one of those teams that will go out west and play a Penn State or Michigan twice with no return trips. I wonder if that's lucrative enough to pay a lot of the bills? They are a D2 school in all sports, so I'm not sure they can play down to D3.

I can imagine those trips offset whatever costs they have to operate their program in terms of travel, ice time, personal. I highly doubt they are generating little revenue during their home dates. They are averaging 547 tickets sold for their home games at 6K seat arena. I believe their enrollment is about 1,700 students. I can't find a figure on endowment numbers but I can imagine it is modest at best.

Bentley, I can understand having D1 hockey given the school academic reputation, alumni base, and geographic location. They finally committed to the on-campus rink so they are trending in the right direction.

AIC I believe and correct me if I'm wrong has no intention of adding an on-campus facility and committed to the Mass Mutual Center? I don't know the details of their deal with the facility but 500 fans in a 6K arena sounds like a terrible expereince.
