UMaine Hockey Offseason: Insert Funny Title Here

Re: UMaine Hockey Offseason: Insert Funny Title Here

Maine pp needs to get pass and shot off quicker. They get the goalie moving but he is set again once they take the shot

I am wondering if you meant just on one power play... probably one I haven't gotten to yet.

I would say the power play has looked deadly. According to live stats Maine is 4 for 6 on the power play tonight.

Well, it was a nice win against a dirty and frustrated team. It was clear Maine was better, but this was their third straight night playing a D1 team and it was clear they were tired. Not sure how good of a read we could get, but early signs were encouraging. I liked Dawe and JSS.

Re: UMaine Hockey Offseason: Insert Funny Title Here

I thought Butala put in a solid game. I didn't notice many mistakes. He made a few good plays and registered a couple blocked shots while taking a few from the point. One was clearly a pass where he was hoping for a Maine forward to tip the puck.

yeah, early in third. Looked like last year, a step slow
Freshman looked good but this weekend will tell the tale.
I thought team looked good but its hard to tell as I know nothing about pei.

In games like last night’s I focus more on individual players than the team as a whole. Given how good Schmidt, Dawe, and Butlala looked I would rate it an unmitigated success.

Does anyone know why Shea and Pearson didn’t play?

Good article on last nights win;

I agree on what has been said about the three freshman, they all looked good. JSS has a nice quick release and an accurate shot, Dawe looks to be a play maker and Butula looked solid on D. I also did notice Hock, he played a physical game and looked like he wanted to make the team rather than sit in the bleachers. By the way, anyone else notice Mundinger had 15 saves? He spent a lot of time flopping around, but PEI didn't score on him!

The team has certainly improved it's depth. Looking forward to seeing them play this weekend.

I noticed Mundinger on a couple plays... first when he got his left foot side skate and pad against the post on one that might have gone in for a lesser goalie. Also, when he lost his blocker he got out and then squared up and snagged a shot with the glove. For a big man he moves well.

I will admit I didn't follow Hock that closely. I did see him make some decent plays.

The guy I thought noticeably improved since last year was Quinlivan. He covered a lot of ground and played a physical game. Reminds me a bit of Robbins in his style. Maybe not yet as fast as Robbins, but covers ground and finishes checks. I really liked how Quinlivan played and I believe he can be an upgrade on that 4th line.

I hope not.

Don't worry about it. Players get hurt. Spirit matters. I realize skills mean so much. But skills without hard work amounts to nothing. You will see progressively hard work will be combined with skill.

You want to know what impressed me with JSS... he hustled his arse of after been caught deep and made that break out go behind and dump back to his back d.

That isn't a flash play on power play, that an exceptional difference. Gets noticed by no one.

Outstanding play from that young man.

Definitely a lot to be excited about after last night. Obviously Holway is a big loss but after watching the depth offensively last night, it made me a little less worried. For as good as Holway was on offense, he was not a true shut down D-Man. An excellent puck mover and a really good shot but Keeper, Binner and Michel all looked capable of picking up the slack last night. Hard to gauge against such a bad team and tired team but the JSS and Dawe look like the real deal. I don't think it's crazy to think that they could contribute 25 goals. JSS looks like a major upgrade from Vesey, (and that is not a knock on Vesey) and Dawe looked a lot like Cam Brown, perhaps with more of a scoring touch. I don't think a player of JSS's skill set has come through since Abbott. Extremely quick release, and able to pick corners. I don't want to ramp the hype train up too much but last night defintely was encouraging. They should steam roll St. Lawrence this weekend, I don't think St. Lawrence can hang with them for 3 periods. Deepest Maine team in years, both offensively and defensively. Potentially 3 contributing scoring lines and they have players like Smith, Quinlivan and Robbins to wear down other teams. Looking forward to what the weekend holds.

What level of hurt?
The thought was he will play this weekend. Might have been bull? Seems odd the Captain wasnt out there for first game unless there was an issue. Guess we will know Friday night

Well, if there was something hurting maybe it makes no sense to play him. I doubt Pearson will learn much playing exhibition against UPEI. But all of the younger guys did.

Here is a Larry article...

Re: UMaine Hockey Offseason: Insert Funny Title Here

Neither of them were dressed. My guess is that Mondays game was a chance to play some of the guys that are (were) unknowns and not risk injury to some of the starters. We may not see a few of those guys again unless Red saw something he liked. Like I mentioned I did notice Hock after he made a big hit in the first period, he played hard but ended up -1 for the night.

Seems to me the following players are going to be competing for one spot on the 4th line assuming Rennaker and/or Lindelow aren't red-shirting.
Quinlivan
Holesinsky
Perez
Hock
Lindelow
Rennaker

And the following three dmen will compete for 6th d man spot...
VMT
Spicer
Becker
