Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

In our praise of Rob and his great start I thought it would be prudent to give props to a very good first four games from the blue line. Our defensive pairings are greatly improved over last season. Despite losing the teams top defenseman this group has made great strides. Michel is really becoming a very good all around defensemen and looks the part of a future captain. Muehlbauer, what a difference from his first game last fall where he looked out of place and outmatched, now hey may be our best defensive defenseman while also pinching and contributing in the offensive zone. Mark is playing much more controlled in his enforcer role and no longer taking the routine boarding penalty a game (by the way terrible call on the elbowing penalty Sat night). Becker's positioning has been fantastic, not flashy but very reliable to start the season. Holway is legit, what a shot, I can't wait to see his first goal from the point. Eric still has is problems keeping the puck in the offensive zone at times but he has displayed a much more aggressive game at both ends this year that has provided great results, he may be the most improved defenseman. Here's to the blue line!!

Go Blue!!

I agree that the D has looked solid.....much improved from last season.

Can we also give it up to the fans? It didn't take long for people to fall in love with this program again. The student section was incredible....they are the Duke student section of ice hockey. Yesterday on campus was one of those perfect fall days and it was packed the hilt. The "record" crowd at the football game was more like 7K, but there was a least another 5K tailgating throughout the game.

I must say this is a much improved Maine team from a season ago. They have much more speed and up and coming talent to boost. They gave Quinnipiac everything we could handle and frankly this could have been a sweep for either team this weekend but all in all it was a hard fought series which each team getting in the win column. Maine is going to be a tough out for anyone they play. I think this team is heading in the right direction under Red Gendron and I didn't know if I could say that after watching them a year ago get smoked against Quinnipiac in Hamden.

Looking like they can play with anyone in the country and go toe to toe with them talent wise. I would say Q pretty happy and lucky to get anything out of this past weekend. Effort has been there since Red took over. Sure seems all the pieces in place now for them to have a good season. I'm optimistic. They'll be some bumps along the way, but they will get their fair share of wins too so long as they don't leave the effort part of the equation in the locker room. Gonna be fun to be relevant again. I think a 500 season is doable and who knows beyond that. Got a glimpse of Mundinger skating ...looks to be pretty smooth skater and athletic. Anyone seen him play?

Confused when you say "Q pretty happy and lucky to get anything out of this past weekend." Had it not been for a giving up 3 unanswered goals to end the game on Friday, it would've been a Q sweep.

Also not to take anything away from you guys, cause you played a good weekend, but we are no number 3 team in the country at this point. That ranking is out of respect for what was accomplished last year and over the past 5 years. We lost 5 guys that could play a significant role on any team in the country. We will have to fight for an NCAA tourney spot and some people predict us to finish 4 or 5 in the ECAC, I think more top 3.

With all that said, you guys have a stud in Fossier and a much improved team. You guys always play us tough and its good for our boys to experience an away crowd like yours. Hope you guys make some noise in HE. Good luck the rest of the way.

My brother and his son came up to see the school on Friday night and went to the game. His comment "The student section was epic!" Good to see some positive vibes coming out of Orono.

nchc.tv has the live feed... can get to the link from the schedule page on Miami's website... stream is not free.... 15 for a day pass, 19 for a month pass which would get you just miami games during that timeframe... month pass would be the way to go if you were looking to stream friday and saturday

I am greatly looking forward to this weekend series. I attended graduate school at Miami during the latter part of the last decade and attended as many games at the Goggin as I could. Miami has a great rink, a great and underappreciated student section and one of the top coaches in college hockey. The students at the Goggin are one of the most ruthless towards opposing goalies I have seen in college hockey, Rob will need to remain focused. Both teams are young this season and building to get back to the top of their respective conferences. Maine is going to have to stay out of the penalty box this weekend. Coach Blasi always ensure excellent special teams play including all 6 of their goals this year (6/26 23.1%) and a penalty kill that is 1/21 (4.8%). The defensemen will need to keep an eye on week side cherry picking every time puch is deep in Miami's defensive zone as Blasi likes for his boys to create as many odd man rushes as possible. Two young and hungry teams trying to stake their claim to the top 20. Can't get much better than this!

Go Blue!!

Who did Miami replace Blasi with?

Miami fan here. There use to be a couple other Miami fans on here that would post pretty regularly but I haven't seen them since last season. Perhaps they are actively lurking right now.

Anyway, as you said we have 14 freshman on the roster. Three of those 14 are goalies including Ryan Larkin who has started all three of our games so far this year. Other than one mistake coming out of the goal to play the puck leading to Providence's game winning goal in the first game of the season he has been pretty solid making a couple highlight reel saves keeping that first game even close. Of the 11 non-goalie freshman, 10 have dressed for at least one of the three games and I think the other one is injured. Standouts of the freshman have to be Carson Meyer and Karch Bachman. Meyer has been playing on the top line with Anthony Louis and Josh Melnick, and both Meyer and Bachman have seen a lot of power play time probably leading to them being tied for second on the team with 7 SOG each. As for the young defenseman, they have been pretty solid so far with a couple of dumb penalties here and there, but that is to be expected especially with how the games seem to be called early in the season.

I think Maine visiting Oxford this weekend should be a very fun series. Miami as a team is struggling a little to get going even strength so far this season (0 goals) but the special teams has been great (6 PPG, 20/21 killing penalties) leading to a very up in the air series. I really have no idea as far as a prediction, I am just hoping for an even strength goal!

My wife is also a Miami of Ohio alumni who keeps an eye on their season. This has the potential for a great series and hopefully Maine can pull out one win at least, two would be a dream. Or else I'll hear about if for a while I suppose.
I've been to the Goggin rink and it is extremely nice, being on the road the bears better fuel up.
