Hockey East coaches' poll is out, Maine picked last: http://hockeyeastonline.com/men/pres1617/201609/sep26mcp.php

I'm a little surprised by this. I figured they would be 11th or 12th in the media poll but thought they would do better in the coaches poll. I wonder if this means the other coaches don't hold Maine's recruits in very high regards or if they don't pay much attention. It should provide the team with great motivation though.

What it means is, the league is tough and going from 8 wins to anything better than that is tougher. The other thing it might say is no matter how good the recruits are, the other coaches don't think the staff is up to snuff. I haven't seen anything that tells me Red is going to get them going, have you?

I didn't actually see the game, but I thought coming back from 3-0 down in the last game of the season last year was impressive. I thought last year overall they played hard, there just wasn't much talent. This year should be significantly better but I guess time will tell.

They see what many see and have said: TOO many question-marks in Goal/Defense/Scoring and lack of recruiting year after year to make any progress or to get over excited about...I figured 10th but can also see 12th. Time will tell indeed. The baby steps are over and this Staff needs to earn it's keep.

True, lots of question marks. I don't see them hosting a playoff game but I don't them in 12th either. If Goaltending improves they might surprise the other lower tier teams?
Red knows hockey, the question remains can he get everyone on the same page?

Maine will not finish last! Actually I am optimistic for the first time in a few years that we are turning the corner. It gives me ZERO pleasure to say I think Maine finishes 8th and it is an accomplishment, because it is not, but I do think we will be much better. Yes that is 8th!

Got to break out the HE cellar before getting anywhere near the NCAA top 20!!
I suppose the HE coaches know or see something we don't, we may look at things through the wrong glasses.
In any event they won't finish last.

I wonder how many guys dress for Sundays exhibition. Maybe all but some sit for 2nd and 3rd periods? I wonder if Malcolm can finally look like the player the staff thought he could be, Jay thinks he is a stud? The other thing to look for is Rob. Lines should be interesting.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

I'm amused that the HE coaches pick BC 6th, but USCHO has them 5th nationally.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Also, it would be interesting to know if there are any guys who are injured. Other than the story on goaltending it doesn't seem like Larry has written very much.

Red deals with the media in a "Belichick manner" saying as little as possible with any substance and steering away from anything of relevance. Watch one of his post game news conferences, it's like attending a wake. Maybe if he won more that may change but I honestly doubt it.

Does anyone know for sure the eligibility status of Doherty, Pieper, and Hoglund? I've seen speculation on all of them but didn't know if anyone has the NCAA's final answer on each.

Doherty & Pieper no answer for you, Hoglund the 2nd Semester.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Hopefully someone goes to the game tomorrow and gives us a report. Like to know if Rob looks any different and if the young-uns have any speed. Can't believe they want 20 bucks to see an exhibition.

Is Pieper the kid from Quinnipiac, can't imagine him being able to play for a year. He played at Q last year so he has to sit a year? I also can't imagine him helping the team much if he couldn't get time at Q

You really can't believe it? They've been pulling this scam for years. It would have been a good chance to have open admission and get some new people in but administration, as they always do, chose the cash instead.

I would have agreed with you a few years ago but Tegeler was pretty good and he couldn't even get a game at UMass. I'm willing to give Red the benefit of the doubt until one or two transfers are flops. To me it looks like Hoglund has a lot more potential than Pieper.

Tegeler was good as a senior but couldn't make the lineup his first years. How old was he by then? 24 25?

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

I guess Larry isn't going to bother with a season preview this year. There is a story about one of the players on the team Maine is playing but only a couple sentences about Maine. The coverage this year has been very disappointing and certainly doesn't help attendance. Someone mentioned Red doesn't like to talk to the media but why bother trying to hold much back this time of year? The game tomorrow doesn't even mean anything.

Looking at box scores I just hope Maine comes out alive tomorrow. Penalty fests all over in Hockey East
