UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

In other news: I knew our special teams was bad. I didn't realize just how bad it was, but someone on the reddit put together some handy/depressing charts.

Yeesh. That guy on Reddit posts lots of good charts, so thanks for sharing.

If anything, this helps reinforce my perception that Maine is actually pretty decent at 5 on 5, buy and large, and that special teams have been killing them this year.

Here is everything lined up for FY27-FY31.....

Of course many things need funding.....some things have funding already secured. Interesting to note that there are plans to demolish multiple buildings on campus which I think is a good thing. They don't need to keep pouring money into ancient buildings with no historical significance and would cost tens of millions to renovate. On that list: Murray Hall, Libby Hall and Barrows Hall. $100 million is budgeted for a new Residence Hall.....would not be surprised if that becomes a public/private partnership much like Ursa Hotel and Sodexo food services on campus. Also the Life & Health Sciences Complex planned with the recently secured $45 million in federal money (I don't like Collins but she sure has secured the bacon in this election year)....I think this is a precursor to a Med School which I think the Alfond Foundation will be a big part of in the next 5-10 years.
Thanks for providing this and it is very informative. I know a lot of people weren’t happy about the public/private partnership but seems like they’ve done a nice job with Hotel Ursa.

Another factor is the amount of money not designated to athletics that will be spent at other UMS campuses. I was at UMF last year and safe to say that campus needs investment probably worse than UMO does.

I like the idea of building new on campus but agree that it needs to be done in tandem with knocking over old buildings. The system is already running at a deficit and by building more without fixing the existing footprint, you’re just adding more to the maintenance costs.

Is bennet running the PP like Fortier did?

Less than 5 years ago a 7-win UMaine hockey team lost an opening round Hockey East tournament game at Merrimack 6-2.

I remain unsure that we are facing the end of the world because the team is slightly above .500.

I'm about 50% with you. Special teams has sunk this team, especially the leakiest penalty kill I can remember.

But this team has also regressed at 5v5. The offense has really dried up and we aren't going to win many 2-1 games with how the goaltending has looked.

Am I on the UHN thread by mistake? Lots of cesspool type chit going on in here. So uncharacteristic
You think we should all be happy with what this team is at this point?

Barr did an amazing job to get the team to where they were at end of last season.

But this team seems to not be synergistic. Meaning it is playing less than the sum of the parts.

When you have a fan base that knows this you can expect people to be unhappy and cranky.

To expect our fan base to not be this way is to expect them to be complacent with losing or being average.

Nobody wants average. If you want average and complacency then go find another fan page to read.

Until that time expect more crankiness, but know it isn’t a bad thing.

Peter Metcalf was one of my favorite Blackbears because he was ultra competitive and was a helluva sore loser.

I like sore losers, because at least they care. It bothers them to lose.

Anyone ok with losing can go back to hanging out in their recliners and watching little house on the prairie reruns.

This sounds like some slander to me. Effort from Poirier has been consistent which is more than I can say for most of the guys. As for him being back next year, I think he’s gone. This is a stepping stone for him to get to the next level.
I was going to let it go, but seriously dude, players dont assassinate others characters like you are implying. What they are saying is some people on the team are pricks. Take the good with the bad. Not everyone gets along. I'm all for a little anger between them to bring them closer together. Let's take two examples:

A. Close knit team, fight tooth and nail, stick up for eachother, consistent effort, never give up, fight to the last second no matter how much you are losing
B. Talented team. Wilts quickly when they go down by a goal or two, mental lapses, trouble meshing, trying to find a way but always seem to be on the short end of the stick which wears on you and makes you fight from within and eachother because you haven't dealt with this before.

One team is this year, one team is last year.

I’m not saying you’re wrong or your source is spewing BS. In my eyes it just doesn’t seem to jive with what we see on the ice. Despite being the most talented player on the team, he’s back checking and seemingly doing the little things right.

I don’t know JP personally and if that’s true, that’s a damn shame because he’s tremendously talented.

I think you are spot on, wasn't trying to call you out. I think my point is players are thinking shit that may not be there. Doesnt that speak volumes on the infighting? I didnt want to really say but there is some jealousy if you ask me

Jealously from the rest of the team towards 93? He's got a ton of talent but it's going to be VERY tough sledding to cut out a career in the NHL given his size, not even considering how loaded carolina is right now (not even bradly can seem to get time up there despite dominating the AHL ranks). That said, his chances are far higher than most others on the team so i guess that could be part of it

It's really weird. We've got a whole lot of people thinking it's Maine's birthright to be a top 5-10 program every year, when there was just a 10 year gap of absolute mediocrity. We've got people questioning the character of kids they've never met just based on random rumor and innuendo. I don't know what Sparkee's on about but there's some kind of insinuation that the fans being okay with the team being slightly above .500 is a lack of manhood or something.

Only 16 teams make the NCAA tournament each year, and there are 35-40 programs out there putting an honest effort into it. Some of them are spending a whole lot more money on players than Maine! Not only was Maine mediocre at best, bad at worst, for almost 20 years, but the entire landscape of college athletics just got turned on its head. Maine winning somewhere between 17 and 19 games in one season isn't a disaster.

Some of you act like if Maine isn't prime Walsh-era, 30+ wins, Frozen Four every year there is some malevolent force that we need to root out, be it bad coaching losing the locker room, players not trying their best due to petty interpersonal bullshit, a vague liberal conspiracy that infects junior year goaltenders, or whatever. That's a pretty dark place to live. Sometimes you graduate a ton of talent and even with everyone trying their best and getting along the next season isn't as good!
