UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

I agree coming back multiple times is a good sign, but don't let the result cover the symptoms. The play right now just isn't at the level it should be. Hopefully the winter break hits the reset button.
They still have two more important games before the winter break. Even though Lindenwood is a team most of us haven’t heard much about, they are 17th in NPI. They are 8-4 in their last 12 which includes a split with Denver. So we can’t even overlook an independent.

Also, I see your point. Mine is that this appears to be a team of great individuals but not strong at playing as a team. My point is, I will take a game without everything looking flashy and pretty if it comes with gritty and team cohesion. I mean, let’s not give them shit for not playing as a team and letting games slip away from them when they just didn’t let the game slip away and played as a team to pull out the win. Being pretty doing something counts in beauty pageants. And flawless execution counts in diving. But hockey isn’t a beauty pageant or diving. Ugly, gritty, tough, nasty, and a never give up attitude by a cohesive team beats the brakes off flashy, pretty, perfect execution by a collection of soft individuals that don’t play as a team.

It’s no wonder people are calling for a letter to be added to Fowler’s Jersey. If you are looking for “Ugly, gritty, tough, nasty, and a never give up attitude” I think the first one you would choose on this team is Fowler. I do think Freel fits this as well.

With the University wanting 7% cut in all departments how much will this affect Hockey?
Doesn’t the hockey program turn a profit? I doubt they would need to be included in a cut like this.

Maybe they could cut DEI officers or something? There is likely more than 7% in each of these departments. Probably some departments more than in others. Desperate times call for logical measures.

They might be positive cash flow wise but using gaap or whatever accounting standard my guess is they run a pretty big loss.

You love brining your politics into these conversations.....want to talk about your Pedo Party?

I wasn’t. If anything I want the effed up politics to be dragged out of the University. Luckily that will actually cost the University less and they can keep, and continue to employ, professors that actually teach things… actual useful things.
Maybe we need the Pedo Party out of DC so this country can function normally again.

I’m fine with that too. You see, I like to get rid of costly useless things in general. It’s easier to not be political when you simply focus on cutting the burden on tax payers if the tax payers don’t benefit from whatever they are spending tax payer money on. You find you don’t need to identify yourself with either political side. In fact, you begin to distance yourself from both quite quickly. Hence being registered independent in my case. I only vote for spending if it benefits our local communities. That’s my politics.

All that to say you voted for the current admin in DC

Im hearing its an 18million budget gap for 2027, no specifics on what will be done yet, but soon.

Its made me wonder with all the sports facility upgrades was money set aside for what will be increased cleaning and maintenance of them. If they want to keep them in top shape that is. Stuff breaks and wears out right.

Building an 80 to 90 mil bball facility when they might have to announce major employee reductions will sure have a bad look. Even though we all know where the money came from.

I certainly question the wisdom of building a new basketball facility when there are two suitable facilities on campus and another not far from campus. It seems like more of a nice to have than need to have. Maybe the Alfonds would let that money be used to fix academic buildings?

I’m sure part of the deficit will be pretty painless to fix but they’ve been trying to get cut expenses for like 15 years so not sure how much sand is left in the budget. There are only like six sports that have any sort of budget and I would think those are the ones most in danger of cuts. I know we’re not supposed to say anything nice about him but good on Red for starting the Standbrook fund. Hopefully that can ease the pain from any budget cuts program faces.

Did the $6 million check handed to Ben Barr a couple of months ago go into the "Standbrook fund created by Red Gendron"? I am seriously dumbfounded by Maine fans and sports media alike that this very public exchange that took place at Alfond has been swept under the rug. I'm not saying that something nefarious has taken place.....but can we have a bit more transparency.....especially in light of these pending budget cuts?

I think it’s business as usual. We never get much for details as far as what is happening financially. You or someone else could file a FOIA request and maybe get some details that way.
