Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

I think that for the most part Maine's performances have been pretty good this year. The only games they've played bad in were against BC and UML. They fell apart in the third against BU but the Flynn sending off completely changed that game and from what I have read he shouldn't have gone. They need to do a better job of turning games like they played against MC, UND, and UNH into wins. I think that determines how far Maine goes.
Flynn going was a joke, the guy caught an edge and started going down when Flynn bumped into him. Doesn't matter though, Maine hasn't beaten a good team this year, and has but a handfull in the previous few years. Untill they show me they can win against the meat of HE, they ain't going anywhere

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

NU is 6-0-1 in their last 7 gms...with wins over Michigan,Minnesota and they swept Notre Dame in a two game set at ND.

Although I am a a seriously involved Husky fan, I have a real soft spot in my heart for Maine and its hockey program. I live near Boston but I have a second home on Swan Pond in Lyman and have spent as much time as possible in Maine since I first ran the Allagash ar age 14. (I release all of my fish.:))

That having been said, I must point out the Huskies actually are 7-0-1 in their last 8 games. There were wins over PC, UML and UVM during the run. Maine and NU have virtually identical overall records (we have an extra tie).

We Husky fans are delighted, while you folks sound miserable. IMO we're not that good and Maine certainly isn't that bad. A bit of a pickup in the second half could give both teams home ice in March.

What I don't understand Is why so many posters and fans seem to detest "Timmay". I think Mainers were spoiled by Sean Walsh who was, simply put, a very special person, coach, salesman and motivator. After reading Stgeve Jobs biography, I believe that the two men some similarities that went toward making up part of their genius. You have to understand that you will be fortunate to meet and benefit from characters like Sean even once in a generation. In the meantime, you'll have to make do with the efforts of mere mortals.

Will someone please explain to me what TW has or hasn't done and what he needs to do to rally the troops? This ongoing discord takes away from the fun we all should have during the college hockey season.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

Maine fans live for the postseason. This year, Maine will miss the NCAA tournament for the 6th straight season. Now, it's not realistic to expect Maine to keep up the Michigan-type streak of NCAA appearances. But an appearance every other year seems like a legitimate goal. I think there's a better chance of Maine's postseason absence stretching to a decade than there is of Maine making the NCAAs this year or next.

So, no more postseason. That leaves the regular season. People might be happier if the team were competitive against its main rivals, but Maine is something like 8-33-6 against BU/BC/UNH over the last few seasons.

There are lots of additional gripes about "process" - whether that's recruiting, personality, player development, etc. Personally, I'm a results guy. I don't care if he acts like Mr Rogers, and I don't care how hard Maine is recruiting the USHL/BCHL/Ukranian Super Midgets.

It's possible that Maine is so screwed by their location and lack of resources that the mediocrity that TW has settled into should be considered a gd miracle. That changing leadership might make things worse. I'll happily take that risk. D1 coaching spots aren't lifetime appointments. Stability is great when things are going well. But when the program settles into rut and becomes complacent about mediocrity, and it doesn't look like that's going to change in the foreseeable future . . . then it's time to give a chance to some young, hungry assistant and see what he can do given a chance at the D1 level.

Most of the "haters" are itching to be "Friends of Maine Hockey." They just want the university itself to be a Friend of Maine Hockey.

To be fair, it's only the 5th straight season, though unlike us, you guys are at least competing and picking up some wins. I'm sure Hockey East is psyched they are featuring the 4 worst teams in Hockey East next weekend at Fenway! Good luck to you guys!

Maine needs to have their house in order by the time Notre Dame enters the league in 2013-2014.

Nice post - very reasonable and all - but it kinda misses the point.

I absolutely mean no disrespect here, but if you're a UML, an NU, or a Western Michigan etc., the job of coaching hockey doesn't entail much more than running a clean program and having the occasional respectable season...At Maine, the bar is higher, and Tim is looking at 5 consecutive years of failing to clear it.

I always like to trot out this analogy: if I (or practically any of us ) fell short of what was expected of us in our various jobs for one year, we'd instantly be history in terms of staying employed. Yet Tim still draws a paycheck, and a fat one, for accomplishing far less than what he's paid to do.

If we all had long-term contracts that paid us no matter how badly we performed our work I wouldn't ***** and moan, but we don't... And Tim has been riding the gravy train too long at the taxpayers' expense. Well past time for him to go. I'm convinced that he'll never be a consistent winner at Maine, or at any other D-1 school.

Lets hope the "Gravey Train" gets derailed at the end of the season by AD Abbott...if not don't expect more then a 12-14 win seasons...6th thru 8th standings in Hockey East...and maybe a 9th or 10th sprinked in...if they make the QF's that it will be on the road and bounced out quickly...so don't think of Playing in Boston...moving on to the NCAA's after and a Chance for the Icing on the Cake...playing for a Frozen 4 Championship. With TW in place the Program is in a downward nose-dive....

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

If he could say it publicly, Whathead would claim that Maine fans should accept mediocrity and middle of the pack status as success. That is because that is the best this man can possibly hope to accomplish. Fortuneately, or unfortuneately I guess, us fans expect more from the program every single year. Hopefully Abbott and the administration agrees with the fans and not the 'coach' and sends him packing at the conclusion of this season or sooner.

You guys pounding on Tim, you're wasting your breath, he is here until April at the very least. Enjoy the Florida championship, the competition sucked but at least the team went there and did what it was supposed to do. Got 2 more games that they should win and then we'll see what happens.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

so, what's the low down on Fenway tickets?

I heard that last year, they were being sold for as little as $5 apiece as the day of the game got closer.

anyone know where to get cheap tix? I really could not care less where I am going to sit at this event, I think that being there is what's important.... and I have a feeling that there is not a good seat in the house.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

I'd imagine once game time gets closer, they'll be selling for dirt cheap on the street. I'd wait as long as possible. The UVM-UMass game will be a huge stinker anyways.

One idea I had was buying as cheap of tix as you can and then sitting in UMA or UVM fans good seats once they leave. I can't imagine a lot of them are going to want to stay for the second game.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

A couple of things.......

1. Maine could save at least $50K per year and get what they are getting now (mediocre recruiting and middle of the pack finishes)

2. Anyone (Whitehead, talking heads, fans, etc) that say Maine can no longer compete for the best players or maintain Top 20 status only need to look at the current teams in the Top 20.......Merrimack, Western Michigan, Colgate, UMass-Lowell, Union, Ferris State, Lake Superior..........

The "RIGHT" person in charge could have Maine up and running in a short period of time...Goaltending & (Goaltending Coach) and improved recruiting over all of North America...change in attitude on and off the ice.

That's not the only game that's going to stink.

It'll be a special event, but not like it's UNH v. Maine from 98 - 06 anymore. Down year for both teams.

Drew S - if it's like the last Frozen Fenway, regardless of open seats, security will check your ticket and you won't be able to move into better seats. Just a friendly heads up.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

Who else thinks its a possibility that the boys are looking to Fenway and ignoring Vermont tomorrow night? I say Maine is in for a tough game against Vermont because of this possibility.?
