UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

Wasn't it pretty well-known that Gustav wasn't playing at 100% early in the year last season?

Abbott is having a great season, but Nyquist was the type of generational talent that isn't common at Maine anymore. Abbott has steadily improved and stepped up to play the bigger minutes (although some of those blue-line turnovers make me go:   :( ) but his defensive game isn't nearly at the same level Nyquist's was. Gustav had the vision to interrupt the opposition, while Abbott isn't quite there.

Abbott does do a better job of getting the puck on (and sometimes in) the net than Nyquist did, but his game elsewhere is somewhat flawed.

Fair statement, I don't dissagree.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

All great offensive players can be compared, at least in one simple way, - their ability to find the back of the net.
It should be all great scorers can be compared by their ability to find the back of the net. There is a difference between a great offensive player and a scorer.

OK - I'll give you a comparison. Remember Sergey Samsonoff of the Bruins? He could really dazzle with the skating and stickhandling but in the end, he was never a great NHL'r because he couldn't simplify and economise.
Sergei Samsanov is a terrible comparison to Nyquist they are not very similar at all. Abbott would be more comparable to Samsanov as they both have good finish, pass the puck well, yet both are a bit on the lazy side with no desire to play both ends of the ice and rarely pursue the puck. Most in the Detroit organization compare Nyquist to Zetterberg a complete 180 from what Samsanov is.

Besides the fact that the good teams can key on Abbott... what is it you were saying?
(oh, and I gotta ask... he has scored 10 goals... thats' danm good, but he is also personally responsible for 6 or 7 shorties... making him +3 in the goals department (in my hatorade system)... care to explain where I am missing something?

Would love to see examples of this, only 1 I can think of was the Krieder goal, who admitted in an interview after the game that he tripped abbott and it should of been a penalty. As for him vs BC, did anyone show up?? Players are capable of having a bad game, especially a team with realistically 1 line. Here is a few exceptional passes I can remember off hand, but these were probably his only good pass all game lol..........and yes you def hate on him. he gets 9 points and u said oh yes that was nice but vs vermont pshhh . TO say he doesn't make 3 good passes in a game is crazy, I assume u don't pay attention much during the games.

this doesn't include the nice 3 - 1 pass to manges which created a goal vs uvm, and a few others.

Not up to your usual standards here, Sweeper - you need at least ten more "lol's" to make the post completely unreadable.

Yowser! - you remind me of my wife. I was comparing Samsanov and Nyquist strictly in the offensive zone. I watched Samsonoff extensively, and beieive me, Abbott is no Samsanoff, and Nyquist is no Zetterberg. lol

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

Golly-gosh, maybe you should calm down a bit..? :)

Nobody is saying that Abbott is the next Gretzky, but he is just as certainly the most skilled O-zone guy Maine has. If he has given up shortie opportunities, well, that was a coaching decision, to play him on the point.

As long as we're all squabbling anyway, I'm gonna urinate in the fire and say that Abbott has the best hands I've seen at Maine since maybe Tim Lovell, (Gus aside, of course.)

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

same situation, meaning employable as a professional engineer?
last I knew, eric was doing very well at BIW

Same situation meaning he could graduate after his junior year eligibility wise. Nemec redshirted his freshman year.

I assure you I'm neither female or your wife and of course Nyquist is not Zetterberg at this point. He projects out to be that type of player by both Ken Holland and Hakan Andersson, but I'm sure you have a better hockey mind than both those guys.

Dustin Penner?

Abbott is great player, not sure he is a game breaker like Gus was but still a great player. Can't wait till Saturday night haven't seen any hockey lately. The only thing that sucks is its a Nat'l TV game so the flow is going to suck

Do our boys actually have a chance against the Terriers this weekend? Things are looking better than they were a couple of days ago.

Nieto out tonight with a shoulder injury...questionable to play Saturday night too. He's BU's top scorer.

"The Terriers ...will be missing one of their top forwards in sophomore Matt Nieto, who hurt his shoulder in practice on Tuesday....[Parker] did note that Nieto is questionable for that [Saturday's] game"

And Parker not sure who he's going to go with in net Saturday night....was spooked by Millan getting shelled by BC last weekend.

"Parker was not willing to commit to who would start in net on Saturday night, when the Terriers close out the semester with a game at the University of Maine....and should all the defensemen play well on Thursday, MacGregor may not be back in the lineup either."

Alright I've calmed down and any comparisons to my wife were a bit over the top. I guess all that I was trying to say is that alot of razzle dazzle(Samsanov & Nyquist) doesn't always make you a great player, especially in the NHL. As great as Gus was, and with all the great scoring chances he generated for him self, he never cracked the 20 goal mark. Guys like Flynne, Atkinson, Hayes, Thompson, and Butler all did. Nyquist is a great kid and I hope he becomes an NHL star someday.

If Jackie had the whole week to game plan for Maine Saturday I'd say no chance but with them playing tonight at UNH, I'd say they have a chance if we get goaltending. I'll assume Sully, Marty is done until Florida in the consolation game(if they lose the first one?) at best. Be a big win if they can do it

They won't get tested much tonight, I'm afraid, so I imagine they'll be plenty ready to go on Saturday :(

Not exactly, with respect to Millan. The prevailing thought is he wants to rest him a bit, and give Rollheiser some ice time. Millan's 5 goal effort on Saturday came after the three hour marathon game the night before in which he faced 65,000 shots and that many more scrums, but still played outstanding. Some even tossed around the idea of starting Rollheiser against BC Saturday night because of how tired Millan likely would be. And also, MacGregor sitting is hardly an advantage for you, he's our worst Dman. Nieto being out would be a significant loss for us, however.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

Best scorer, yes. Best hands, maybe. Best player, no.

while coaches, in fact, are on the game sheet, they are not considered rostered players... so while I agree Corkum would be the best player.... he does not count.

who were you thinking of?
O'Connor? Abbott would be my top O and top overall, and O'Connor would be my top D.
None of the 3 goalies would be the best, in my opinion.... and certainly not the best player
