Re: UMaine '18-'19: Back to the Nationals!

......... How would you like to have inherited Matt Morris as your #1 goaltender?...........

Matt Morris was coached by Standbrook at Dubuque under Montgomery. I would feel confident in saying that he was brought in at Standbrook's urging.

Then Guite brought in anybody whos any good on this moribound club.

Grant got Howard Moore Purcell Bishop maybe even Flynn and ONeill. Pretty sure Nyquist Shore Hutton and Abbott were after his retirement.

Michel, Keeper, Pearson, Fossier, Tralmaks, and JSS are all decent. I don’t think Red’s bear recruits are on the scene yet. Time will tell if they are any good or not. Talent wise Maine should take another step forward next year but who knows what the results will show.

Re: UMaine '18-'19: Back to the Nationals!

Before I give my take I want to preface that it might not be accurate, and if so that's probably because I'm just simply too young to remember the Whitehead era, and although I did follow Hockey East before I started school here 2016, I followed a different program (my father's team since I had no other team to cheer for at the time.)

Pearson and especially Fossier are top tier talents. Those guys are the foundation of the team and provide the majority of the offense, and they both do the small things that make a huge difference. In addition, I think Dohrety is a fine second line center, though on a true national title contender he's probably better suited as a third line center. In addition, I also believe that Tralmaks, JSS, and Dawe have the natural skill to be top talents. However, the regression (in Tralmaks case) and inconsistentcy/injury trouble (in JSS and Dawe's cases) has been concerning and holding them back. Purely on skill, that's a pretty solid Top 6 forward group on paper if you ask me.

The fourth line I think is also been pretty good. Smith is a hard player and adds the sandpaper you need on the 4th line, and he's not a total liability any time he's on the ice. Robbins is probably best suited as a 4th liner and penalty killer, even though he's been playing a Top 6 role, since he has great speed and instincts but isnt great with the puck. Center is probably their weakest point up front, and Pieper played well the first half of last season but has been pretty bad since he was injured. Perez should be nowhere near the ice and I dont know why he gets playing time.

The third line has been the biggest weakness up front, in my view. Again, the wings arent that bad, with Westerlund and Shea being OK options, but center has been a revolving door (I'd still like to see Holesinsky get his shot).

The D is another story. I don't think there's any Pearson or Fossier on the back end. Last year I might have told you Keeper was it, but he's regressed probably the hardest of anyone this year and has looked pretty bad in most games. Michel and Binner are solid players usually, but aren't gamebreakers. I was never a big Muehlbauer fan, but he deserves credit this year for being pretty good most of the season. Becker probably shouldn't be playing and that's where they miss Holway, and when VMT comes back I think he will get some games in his spot. Butala hasn't impressed, but he looks like someone overwhelmed by the college game who might improve dramatically as he gets more experience, at least to me.

Swayman of course is great, but I think hes getting fatigued from playing every game. I wont be surprised or against the decision if McGovern grabs a start in Vermont next weekend. Speaking of him, I kinda feel bad for McGovern, I always viewed him as a solid goalie who had a few not-great games and everyone gave up on him immediately. I'd like to see a few starts from him, both for his sake and to give Swayman a rest.

Sorry for a huge post, but that's my view on the team and talent. I dont think Red has done an awful job at getting players here; maybe not a lot of impact, top of the line talent, but at least this year I dont think the bottom of the roster is a major liability everytime they have to be on the ice. His problem lies somewhere with in-game coaching and discipline probably, he doesn't make many adjustments during the game and has a lot of baffling line combos, possibly for the purpose of "sending a message".

I mean I hope so but given what the guys here now look like Im skeptical about these so-called blue chippahs that are committed. All these guys from the mighty ushl were supposed to be saviors and they largely stink. Fact is no one really knows if these guys can play until they get to college. Robby Dee and Simon Danis Pepin were a hell of a lot sexier on the recruits board than Abbott and say Jeff Dimmen and we know how that turned out.

I couldn’t agree more with your point and think Red has done a better job managing the roster. There are always going to be some guys who don’t work out and you need to have backup plans. Pappalardo is a good example of someone who disappointed and was moved along. Talent isn’t the issue as far as I’m concerned.

Re: UMaine '18-'19: Back to the Nationals!

Why do we need to determine which of Whitehead and Gendron is the better recruiter, talent evaluator, game coach, motivator, etc.?

Neither has succeeded in the way that they need to. All teams have players leave the program, all teams have recruits who don't pan out like they should, all teams have off ice drama. Good coaches figure out ways to overcome those issues and move forward. Bad coaches don't. Neither Gendron nor Whitehead have or did.

If you spill both red wine and spaghetti sauce on my off-white carpet, I'm not going to stand around and debate which one is worse. I'm going to have my carpet cleaned. Just get rid of Gendron and hire someone who can hopefully clean up this mess.

There are not many blue chippers coming in like back late 80s through 90s.

But looking at factual numbers, former USHL forwards coming directly from USHL combine for 39 points. All others leagues represented by our forwards combine for 11. Six of your top seven forward scorers are from USHL.

Only 3 of 8 defensemen came directly from USHL. We all agree the defense has been a weak point for a while now. One of the 3, VMT, hasn't played due to injury, evidently.

The strong point of the team which most agree on is Swayman. He came directly from USHL.

In my opinion there, and they facts tend to back it strongly, that the more USHL recruits a team gets the stronger it will be.

Whitehead and his staff ignored this the last 5 or so years of his time at Maine and it cost him/us dearly. He loaded up on EJHL kids and had no depth.

Having said this, I believe that if a cook can't cook the ingredients don't mean as much. A bad cook can't hide crap cooking with high quality ingredients. But a good cook can cook well enough for you to distinguish.

We need a new cook.

Re: UMaine '18-'19: Back to the Nationals!

Is there anyone here who reads this post think that Red should be given more time and not shown the door? Why?

For the sake of being idealistic forget any consideration to money, buyout cost etc.
Silence can be considered agreement.

Speaking of, coaches show is on, ill tune in.

Should be interesting to hear more on VMT and from USHL coach Greg Moore.

As for Red, it's same old boring speak... "we have to play to our identity, score goals... if we do that I like our team".

If money wasn't an object, I would have fired Red after Year Two. But, sadly, money is an object in this discussion.

Funny, I have worked in health-care for 30+ years, in an ICU, and could have been fired summarily for any serious mistake at any time. I never was paid an annual salary of $200 K, either... But Red keeps skating along, while screwing the pooch. (Guess I picked the wrong profession!)

Who was Holway’s regular D mate last year? Anyone recall?

Assuming Collegehockeystats.net has the lines correct, Holway's primary linemate last season was Muehlbauer, except for 4 games at the end of the season, in which case it was Binner.

I believe he mostly played with either Muehlbauer or Binner. At least, that is who I think he played with most from games I watched. During their long stretch of wins he and Muehlbauer played well and their plus minus rating soared.

Good tip. Actually looks like some games in middle of season he also played with Hamilton. But I agree, seemed like mostly Muehlbauer and Binner down the stretch of hockey east games.

I’m trying to figure out why Keeper is struggling and playing less effectively than last season. So we can eliminate linemates. The kid can skate, control the puck and score, and he’s big. Solid player. We’ve seen it. So why is he noticeably less effective than last year?

I’d prefer they move on. I hope the hiring process is much better this time around and they have the new coach in place by 3/31. If the new AD decides to move on he should be working on the new coach by the start of February.

That's the beauty of having a contract and not being an at-will employee. Welcome to America.

Re: UMaine '18-'19: Back to the Nationals!

After 6 seasons what should we as fans expect from year 1 to now....I figured year 1 and 2 would be a disaster and a cleaning house and setting the foundation towards years 3 and 4...by year 5, I would have expected a above .500 team playing for home ice and a chance to play in Boston for the Hockey East Final Four....by year 6 a legit top 4-5 team in Hockey East, good chance at making and even winning Hockey East in Boston and a Auto Bid or a bubble team for the NCAA's. My year to year wins break down in the regular season: Year 1> 8-10 wins, Year 2 > 11-12 wins, Year 3 > 14 wins, Year 4 > 16-17 wins Year 5 > 18-19 wins, Year 6 > 20 wins.....improvement each and every year
