UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Agreed, Jim. I think they have to go with Grogan for both games this weekend. If the same pattern repeats, then we know it's the skaters. The other way to do it would be to reverse the rotation this next weekend. But right now my gut tells me that is the riskier option.

Hear!! Hear!

Very true. Bruce was doing it with smoke and mirrors. Yes, it wasn't great to have to over-recruit and then let the cream rise to the top. But he had to do that without scholarships in the program.

The situation was the same as FB HC Paul Pasqualoni finds himself in at this very moment. Without the ability to attract a consensus five star QB to the Huskies, he now has five QB's for next year and hopes that one of them will rise to head and shoulders above the rest as they try to coach all five up.

Well put, Dick. I've always, well mostly, been a Marshall defender given what he was asked to do. I think the over-recruiting sometimes lead to problems in the locker room but given what he had to work with he did a solid job, I always thought.

Absolutely. You have to go with Grogan. I know that Bartus has been the face of the program for the last 3 years, but we have at least a shot at a very solid season, and you have to do every thing possible to get there. I also agree that reversing the rotaion is an option, but its not one I'd take.

Great win at the JAR tonight. Now let's see if the Huskies can bear down and grind out a win in Storrs tomorrow. Their season is what the Huskies make it and it is hanging in the balance at the moment. It will be interesting to see how much the Huskies really want it.

This should be fun, a Monday night game.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Whoa, 6-0 at the middle of the second period. Sounds like the dam has finally broken. But I am reminded of that first Mercyhurst game and the fact that the game is 60 minutes long. Nonetheless, it sounds like the just relax and have fun approach is working. Wish I could be there to see this, but the broadcast is great.

See Dick, all they needed to do was go with the hot goalie! LOL...
great to finally get a 4 point weekend!

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Suddenly it is fun to be a UConn Hockey fan again. The last utter blowout I can remember was like 12-0 against Quinnipiac at Hamden HS rink sometime around 1991, the year they won the ECAC East RS. Wish I could remember the name of the guy who got a double hat trick that night. I will look it up when I get home tonight. Great guy.

HC will be a bigger challenge. I will definitely be there on Friday even though I missed out last night. I am hoping for a great crowd. The season is on the line, but I like the relax and just play idea. With a lot of confidence, that should work.

Edit: The name Kevin Sullivan comes to mind, but I will verify tonight.

I thought Bentley would be a tough series to sweep. Not sure they are playing great right now, but still they seem to give the Huskies fits especially in JAR. The Holy Cross series is going to be a pretty big one. Great to be playing big series late in the season. This team is actually playing pretty well. 9-5-1 since the break (I think) including road wins against Robert Morris, Mercyhurst and RIT, all tough places to play, and a solid if unsuccessful challenge to the current #1 Quinnipiac. Haven't gone without a point in any series over that period, either.

You actually saw a guy get a DOUBLE hat trick? Wow!

Nah, didn't see it, the game was down in Hamden. I was right on the year (1991), but it was Kevin Walsh who got the double hat trick and the score was 14-2 over QU. There were several more blowout wins since then, but none in the D-1 era. For instance in 1992 they beat QU 19-2 in Storrs. Of course a few years before that they lost at Merrimack 1-13 and many years before that they lost to Wisconsin 1-8 ... in Storrs. Can you imagine a program like Wisconsin playing UConn in those primitive conditions? I spent lots of time in the visitors' locker room back in the day with my kids' teams. Believe me, that place was primitive. I think it had heat but that was about it. No plumbing, maybe a chalkboard, some rubber mats on the floor.

I always get a chuckle about outdoor games. As a UConn fan we were thrilled to finally have an indoor rink. I froze many a night watching games under that roof. And my one media appearance was for UConn-Army. that was the game where I did the color on WHUS. They were a D-1 program too and they came to Storrs to play. Army won the game, I think 10-2 if memory serves, but UConn led 1-0 after 1 and the very large crowd was really into it. Alas, the game was 3 periods and Army pulled away in the 2nd. The things I remember about that game were how wild the crowd was and hold absolutely freezing it was. And how despite a terrific effort, the difference in the ability of players was huge.

Is there a short list of coaches for the head coach position? If so, anybody know who's on it?

Not close enough to the program to know. Obviously David Berard has done a helluva job and deserves a very very long hard look. I would hire him in a heartbeat, but I don't get a vote:):) If they do not do that, one suspects that they might make a big run at Rand Pecknold and tempt him with big bucks and a new challenge, but who's to say that QU wouldn't fend that off? Then there is always the possibility that Toot may still have enough fire in the belly to be interested. Beyond those obvious possibilities, those with strong ties to HE probably have heard more than Jim and me. Maybe Patman or Kingdobbs know something?

Well, the Huskies are right where they were last year (albeit a bit higher in the standings) when the wheels fell off and they had to play through the tournament the hard way. Somehow I sense a new confidence and don't think that will happen this weekend or this year. I think they understand that if they relax and play hard for three periods, that the level of their game is now high enough that they should win -- pick'em choices on the USCHO fan forum notwithstanding. Big game tonight. Should be fun.

Agree. They need to hit and play smart hockey but I think this team is capable of playing with anyone. They do need to avoid last year's inexplainable swoon, though.

On the coaching thing, I don't have any infor really. I always suspected that Berard was brought in to ultimately take over from Bruce, though. He has lots of Hockey East experience and he's much more seasoned assistant than the typical UConn assistant who historically had been younger guy in maybe his first job or a former grad assistant. I don't think at the time it was expected Bruce would leave that soon, though so that might mess up the equation.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Saw the first two periods tonight. UConn started slowly in both periods only to slowly take over the run of play in the second half of each period. The Huskies looked quite good. If it wasn't for three sloppy mistakes they could have won the game. Grogan did not look particularly sharp. I suspect we will see Mr. Bartus tomorrow night. If so, a big opportunity for him as a lot will be riding on the game.

Unfortunately I will be headed the other way to see Clarkson v QU. It's not everyday that the #1 team in the nation is playing in your back yard, against your alma mater to boot.
