UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Hey, doesn't matter what I think. He's the coach now and he gets to actually prove he is the right guy. Starting October 18 in Mankato Minnesota.

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Cavs will be fine. Knows how to recruit, that's all that matters.

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

This article will make Dick happy. Cavs said he's in to win it re:AHA title.
Oh, he's said all the right things since he came. He said the very same thing in the Courant as soon as he was hired. There may not be many of us just yet, but what fans of the Huskies there are dearly want an AHA title before UConn leaves for HE. Winning the MAAC so many years ago was really fun. This would be so much better.

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Rumor has it that UConn is in the running for a couple big time recruits out of Boston. Can't say that's been the case in the past. Granted you have to win the recruits, because there is a world of difference between being in the running and winning them, but good signs the new regime is making progress.

Falmouth native commits to UConn
By Nathan Fournier

PORTLAND – Ben Freeman’s dream has always been to always play in Hockey East.

That dream came true on Friday when he committed to the University of Connecticut for the fall of 2015, which will be the program’s second season in the conference as they make the move to Hockey East from the Atlantic Hockey Conference in 2014.

From USHR twitter.

USHR@USHRhockey

6-0/190 lb. Avon Old Farms power forward Liam Murphy, a 10th grader and a '98, has committed to UConn(fall '16). A huge get for the Huskies.

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Tough one last night, sounded like they got much better as the game progressed.

Does anyone know the injury status of the three forwards out of the line-up?

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

This wasn't the start I hoped for. After losing Friday in a close one, I was concerned that Saturday would be a blow out. I think its pretty common when a team comes close against a better one. In game 2 the better team usually takes control early.

Not sure about injuries. I think a couple of players were suspended for this one, though.

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Jim, I am going to guess that Cav decided to play a little differently the second night. They got behind, decided to get more aggressive on the forecheck instead of playing it close, and they coughed up some goals. It happens. Not a big deal, an L is an L regardless of the margin. And of course they were missing some players. It may take them a few games to gel and get it going, just like last year.

Not sure what these lofty expectations are based on, but Minnesota State is #18 in the country and will compete for the WCHA conference. I certainly don't like seeing them lose, but let's be real here people. All you supporters acting like UConn should be competing right away with the top teams in the nation are fooling yourselves and being unfair to the team. What has UConn ever won in D-I hockey? This program is certainly on the rise and it's going to be fun to watch them build tradition through winning, but remember they are building it. They have never been a traditional powerhouse, so stop expecting them to just hire a new coach, flip the switch and be a national title contender.

Now go start painting your faces for the home opener and enthusiastically support the Huskies tonight! Can't wait for puck drop.

I'm not sure what lofty expectations have to do with anything.I was hoping to manage a split. Given that a couple of AHA teams managed to pull off upsets, Sacred Heart over Lowell, Mercyhurst over Merrimack come to mind, it doesn't seem beyond the pale to hope UConn could join the party. And MinnyState had been blasted the previous weekend by PC, so thinking an upset was possible wasn't exactly like thinking the Huskies would pound the Stanley Cup Champs.

Finally, for what its worth, I am hoping that the Huskies will manage to knock off Union this weekend. I will be disappointed if they do not, but not because I have lofty expections. Rather because I am a UConn fan and I hope they will win every game, though I don't expect it.

As for the rest, I was simply noting what I have seen as a trend over the years. When playing against a better opponent the best chance to win comes in game 1. Game 2 is often a blowout in favor of the better team.

The Huskies battled tonight. It's clear they don't have the same talent compared to Union, but they never stopped working and managed a tie. That's a great sign. Let's get Harris back in the line-up and start scoring some goals.

Also, can we start having pregame parties for the fans in attendance? The place was full, but the entire crowd was sitting on their hands all game. Make some noise, start a chant, get on the opposing goailie.....anything but sit there like a bump on a log.

IMO.....great work for the tie tonight

Wow, all of twelve posts and already telling us what to expect and how to behave.

UConn is starting out about like we expected. Get the missing personnel back and the gel process to continue, and the Huskies will have a good year.

Here's your line chart tonight vs Union:

In all the years I have watched UConn hockey, I have never seen one of these for UConn. It is entirely possible that it was being done and I never saw it since I never go to the official site. But if this is new, it is absolutely great and long overdue.

Signs of taking the program to a new level?

Sometimes it takes new blood to shake things up.
