UAH plans to stay Division I

Re: UAH plans to stay Division I

The temporary exemption is a brilliant and necessary maneuver, and I will only shed crocodile tears if it's made permanent. [I can make a case for permanence, but only from enlightened self-interest.]

Re: UAH plans to stay Division I

I like the temporary exemption idea and I hope it happens. I also wrote to our AD and asked if something could be done about the situation by the WCHA. I don't know the answer.
I have no specific knowledge but My feeling is that the WCHA is holding a spot for Moorhead. If I were UAH i'd be pushing hard for Atlantic Hockey as I don't see a WCHA decision right away.

Re: UAH plans to stay Division I

As much as I would love to see the Chargers in the new fangled WCHA (I have been a proponent of it), my gut tells me it won't happen unless the new WCHA is somehow carved out into divisions, limiting some of the travel.....

These teams already have some of the smaller budgets in college hockey. That was one of the reasons that the NCHC members cited for leaving, they were not "like minded" enough (ie, $$$$$$). Now these schools already have both Alaskas in the league and flights to Alaska will cost $$$$$ unless the two Alaska schools continue to pay for travel (with the new WCHA forming, it wouldn't surprise me if some of the subsidies go away). If these smaller budget schools have to throw in a trip to Huntsville, it could make some tight budgets breakable.

Like I said, I would love to see the Chargers in the WCHA so they can continue the rivalry with BSU. But, my gut tells me no. I hope my gut is wrong.......

I feel the same way. I don't think it would be the WCHA not wanting UAH, but these schools will look at the conference map, then at their budgets, and thinking, "I don't know about this." But, stranger things have happened, I guess.

Personally, given the current state of the program, I think Atlantic Hockey is better for us anyway. While the fewer scholarships (AHA maxes at 12) isn't optimal, it's still better than zero, and the relatively less travel than the WCHA would be better for our budget.

The easiest way for this to happen is for Air Force to join the WCHA instead, and UAH takes spot No. 12 in AHA, but Air Force seems to like where it is, so I'm not sure how likely that scenario takes place.

There's also the ripple possibility, where Hockey East adds a 12th from Atlantic Hockey, or from ECAC and then ECAC takes one from Atlantic Hockey to stay even. That would open a spot for us, but relying on this scenario can be dangerous.

All this is speculation, of course. I think it will be six months or so before it all plays out. Right now, before we do anything, we need to get this financial plan finalized. Without it, we're still one big question mark that either league will be hesitant to deal with.

Kelly said Atlantic Hockey may be “the only legit candidate” for UAH, which has been an independent since the CHA folded in*2010.

It is unlikely UAH will have any neighbors to form a southern conference anytime soon.

Kelly said several schools, including a couple in the Southeast, have “kicked the tires” about adding men’s hockey. No additions are imminent, he*added.
I'd be curious to know more about the tire-kicking. One presumes that Kennesaw St has received some calls.

Re: UAH plans to stay Division I

I like the idea of a exemption permanently like the Alaska schools get. And what program doesn't want to add game to their program's schedule?
It could give a program 2 more home games in their own barn.

Re: UAH plans to stay Division I

An exemption would be great. It would get better-than-average teams to the VBCC on a much more regular basis, even if it is just for some mid-winter golfing and a trip to Luongo's Cupcake Factory.

I still stand by my thought that the WCHA will pick up UAH and pair them with BGSU for at least the short term. With the B1G restricted, the AHA full and further away, and the NCHC unlikely to pick up a lower-level team (though Miami is closer than BG), it's the best conference bet.

EDIT: Another poster just pointed out to me that if UAH does receive the exemption, the WCHA gets no additional benefit from having them (assuming that every team will visit at least one of the Alaska schools yearly.) Very true - the WCHA would only receive indirect benefit by other conferences deciding to travel to UAH. I still think the WCHA will host UAH for a few years, especially since I'm not overly optimistic that they'll receive an exemption (the NCAA hasn't exactly been good to college hockey recently. But, that exemption would open the possibility of another conference like the NCHC picking up UAH, and could eventually lead to the resurrection of the CCHA around an Appalachian core.

I don't think it will ever happen because of the can of worms it opens. Why for ice hockey but not any other sport? Why Alabama and not Maine? Colorado? Why not Colorado or California for lacrosse? Why not Montana for **** near everything?

Re: UAH plans to stay Division I

Since Clarke Saunders says he still plans on transferring to UND, I have no objection to this.

Because every team dreams of getting a goalie who gave up 9 goals in 4.5 periods on 56 shots (.862 sv% and 6.00 gaa) against Mankato :p

For anyone wondering "how", it's simple: the school, expecting dissolution of the program, granted releases to all the players so they could look for new homes. Those players who had an NLI---I'm guessing that's what was signed---can maintain their transfer-without-penalty status because they were released. While I certainly hope that everyone stays, I can't really fault Clarkie for jumping to a big-time program.

GFM <-- note: this is my understanding of the situation from talking with people related to the program but not of the program. I could be wrong. I thought that I was right earlier.

GFM - as with all things NCAA, the more one digs & asks more questions the more exceptions/"it all depends" things are uncovered. :)

From discussions with NCAA folks: The main "depends" is if they have signed a NLI or if it's just a verbal at this point. If they have a signed NLI, then they can play immediately since they did so at a point where the UAH program considered dead (still not officially back) and they had been released. If it is just verbal, then they will have to sit a year, BUT, once they have been admitted to the new school, the new school can submit a one time transfer waiver request on their behalf. If this waiver approved, they can play immediately, but it's a risk they have to take since they first have to be admitted to the new school. The NCAA guys I spoke to would not venture a guess as to the likelihood of a waiver being approved, but one would have to think that these unusual circumstances would help.

For "normal" recruits, the NLI early signing period was Nov 9-16 and the next time they can sign isn't until April. Assumption is that these guys would subject to that same time table.

Re: UAH plans to stay Division I

Good for them. Never want to see a program die, especially in this sport.

I wonder if the AHA or (New) WCHA will pick them up?

Re: UAH plans to stay Division I

... even if it's just $5.

GFM <-- will do his giving on Wednesday, and it will be a bit more than $5.

You should have gotten our check and letter by now Geof. We've not seen a confirmation e-mail yet, so we're not sure. That is something that we really would like to impress on the blueline club and hockey admin. Thank you notes and follow up are important to making people feel that their contrabutions were meaningful. Those little membership cards that make it out some years and not others? Inconsistancy in hurts our cause. We definately need to make sure we're on top of those little things so that people feel included.

We'll also commit to another gift next fiscal year (October), but the size will depend on our financial stablity.

Re: UAH plans to stay Division I

I went ahead and sent my check in shortly after I made my three year (let's face it, lifetime) pledge. I wanted to put my money where my mouth was as I too threatened no further $$$ support if DI hockey disappeared.
...there were three zeros at the end of mine. Anyone care to match it??? You get free parking too!!! :D

Not bragging, just challenging... Come on Huntsville!!! Weeee can do eeeeet!!!

Are you counting the two after the decimal point? :p
