UAH Hockey 2018-19

Re: UAH Hockey 2018-19

Just an idea but I'd love to see UAH partner with the Atlanta Gladiators and have a regional in the Infinite Energy Center. Wouldn't be too hard to schedule a late-season road weekend for the Glads. Regionals are sparsely attended anyway so there shouldn't really be too much worry there. The arena is 45 minutes from the airport but that's whatever.

I wonder if any opposing radio guy hasn’t cracked their head on those beams in the “highest dungeon in the South” at least once...

I remember when I went up there for the first time with the Ice Flyers. My 6' 4" self stood there for a second and thought to myself, "... once I'm in, I'm not leaving."

I am here for all "the VBC is a dump" discussions.

I think the fan experience has improved with the renovations but that's about it. I'm guessing they didn't expect sports in general and hockey in particular to be a regular thing when they built the arena in 1975, or else they would have accounted for media coverage. As a result, the media got pushed to an area that was intended for spotlight storage and light and sound switchboards for concerts, and TV and web cameras set up on makeshift wooden platforms covering rows of seats. This is the kind of stuff I'm sure (and I hope) they look at with the new facility if it happens.

I guess I have a limited window for that lottery win...

exciting news about a new arena. although I like the old one. but an arena on campus is always a good thing.

The VBC is too big for what we need. If they put more than 4,000 seats in the new place, they're stupid. But this will allow them to put a real home locker room, a quality visiting one, as well as home/visitor pairs for WBB, VB, and MBB. Volleyball is gonna get dwarfed in that building and feel very strange.

My only concern is that the idea in going with a bigger facility will tempt the Powers That Be to join North Alabama in Division I. Nooooooooo thank you.

I suspect there are already a few who are already wanting UAH to go full D-I with this facility.

5,000 seats, home locker room for each sport, at least 3 multi-sport visiting locker rooms so you can host 4 team tournaments. 5,000 isn't overly large. If done right, 2500 can make it seem like a decent crowd.

A mid-winter tournament has always been a hope on my end.

The UAS BoT has put the campus expansion in the master plan but didn't allocate funds for it.

Pardon me while I throw a few chairs...

throw away. your program has hung in there for so long, you deserve better.

Re: UAH Hockey 2018-19

I think that this is our last year as a varsity program.

GFM

Wow!

Like you I have been hoping for a PowerMillions/MegaBall windfall to spring Charger Hockey from surviving status to thriving status. Still no success on that plan.

When the new on-campus (extension) arena idea was announced I celebrated the idea but worried at the lengthy time frame. With the approval but no funding result that became even more of a concern.

As for your statement, is there a reason that Charger Hockey wouldn't play 2021-2021 also, to at least see out the nWCHA era? Sure, the travel costs have little return when your (partially) hired friends are all leaving soon anyway.
