UAH Hockey 2017-18

Re: UAH Hockey 2017-18

What a joke. UAH has no business in the WCHA playoffs, as evidenced by their game 1 performance against NMU. The WCHA should seriously consider booting UAH in favor of Arizona State and finally let their program die. Portera had the right idea several years ago but some big babies kept whining about his correct decision. UAH is NOT a D-I school and it’s pathetic that a “professional” goon hockey team outdraws them in their own barn. They can’t recruit top talent, they can’t compete in a decent league (CHA was a joke and everyone knew their NCAA auto-bid was laughable) and they almost never win out-of-conference. They have a hack coach and several players who only went to UAH as a last resort. For the love of god, stop pretending that you belong. You don’t. It’s that simple.

It's a good thing that there is an ignore button on this forum.

Well UAH won tonight and proves even more this post is full of epic fail.

Re: UAH Hockey 2017-18

Does anyone keep up with the number of majors that UAH collected this year? I think that UAH had a label from previous games and the major whistle just comes out, warranted or not. Would like to know which team in the WCHA leads in majors. The boys played their hearts out for most of this year, but it felt like we collected a major at every home game, at least the ones I attended (missed two).

It was an enjoyable season. UAH was in most every game, quite a few nail biters.

Hope Sinclair is able to replace Jordan.

Welp, that's that.

They tried their hardest. Back to double-digit wins -- matching the total from 2009-10. It's been a fun ride! And best of luck and congratulations to NMU.

But ugh that alleged major/game on Knight. UGH.
I don’t like the call either, but...the official has no room for discretion.

“Contact to the head. Any time a player makes direct contact with the head or neck of an opponent it is a major penalty and game misconduct at a minimum.”

Knight clearly caught Payne in the facemask with the elbow. It wasn’t particularly hard. I’m not even convinced it was intentional. But was direct.

Loved the way these teams battled and the rivalry forming. I saw players & coaches for both teams after the game and both were talking about the respect for each other. It was easily the longest lasting handshake line of the year.

Looking forward to my two trips back to Alabama next fall & winter!

I don't know where to quickly find that information. College hockey stats does not do a breakdown of types of penalties -- it just has penalties, penalty minutes, and penalty minutes per game.

The best approximation I can come up with is calculating penalty minutes per penalty -- with the more majors and misconduct penalties a team gets, the higher that average is. Misconduct penalties may skew that, although these days if you're getting a major for contact to the head you're getting a game misconduct (which counts as 10 minutes in the stats) as well. UAH leads the WCHA this season at 2.53, followed by Alaska at 2.46, and Alaska Anchorage at 2.44. Northern Michigan is last at 2.28.

UAH also has (or now had) this edge case named Brennan Saulnier. Take out his 28 penalties for 121 penalty minutes (4.32 minutes per penalty!), and we drop to 2.27. He was literally the difference between first and last. So I don't think the team itself had that label, but Saulnier certainly did. He lost benefit of the doubt years ago.

Yeah, you're right about the call, but it's hard to stomach when it's the turning point of such a big game.

Oh well. I'm very glad the teams showed respect for each other afterwards. It was such a battle of a three-game series (seven-game if you count the regular season). Good luck to the Wildcats -- such a great run by a team that was picked to be 7th!

Re: UAH Hockey 2017-18

This felt like a UAH-NMU tilt back in 2003 when the Chargers were holding their own until a key player (Karlis Zirnis) took a major penalty with game misconduct early on (CFB, and it was pretty weak — even the NMU fans we went drinking with that night thought so). NMU scored three times and just ran away with it (literally ... it was 7-0 before we made it 7-3 in the third). If it's just one goal tonight, maybe they can hold it down, but two goals made you think that you had to not only put three more in on Tolvanen (a tough task) but hold down a very good offense (another tough task).

NMU was obviously the better team coming into the weekend, but UAH had been a good opponent for them all season as well. I hate to miss out on the rest of the playoffs at all, but I don't mind going out to the Wildcats.

As for UAH having a reputation: we had one under Ross that Cole and Luongo largely erased. Guys like Seabass and now Sauns have brought it back. I'm glad the kid is gone. I'm also glad that his attempted cross-check to a Wildcat in the last minute hit the CCM on the yoke rather than the back of his neck...

A new recruit for next season, forward Jack Jeffers who plays for Markham (OJHL). Jack finished 5th in the league in scoring with 79 points.

In order to help with recruiting, a more favorable travel budget needs to be in place. A 20 hour bus trip the day before a playoff game doesn’t portend well for fortunes on the ice. NMU, Tech & Bemidji, at minimum, should all be flights. Probably LSSU & Mankato too.

While I agree, part of the problem with that is you can’t realistically fly a whole hockey team into any one of those places, especially on short notice. Unless you charter, and I don’t see that happening.

So, depending on your destination you are looking at flying into Minneapolis or Detroit, which may very well involve a connection from Huntsville (or Duluth or Green Bay, which would definitely be an extra connection), or a bus ride to Atlanta. And at minimum a 5-ish hour or longer bus ride to the UP or Bemidji.

Suddenly, that long-*** bus ride from Huntsville doesn’t sound nearly as terrible. A better solution, at least from a hockey perspective, would be to get to the destination more than 24 hours before the puck drops.

I have said this for a long time, and I know you disagree...travel to the UP is almost as much of a pain as flying to Alaska for a good chunk of the league. At least with Fairbanks and Anchorage, once you’re there then you’re there. No long bus rides.
