UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

We need another year of forward development from the kids and the rising juniors.

The three points this weekend make it pretty likely that UAH will make the playoffs. It's going to be hard for both the Lakers and Seawolves to pass the Chargers. Pick up 3-4 points on the next two home weekends — and that's realistic from Ferris and maybe a little less so from Alaska — and we'll be just fine.

Very realistic from Ferris (not saying it will be easy of course). FSU has only scored 1.44 goals per game on the road (as opposed to 3.23 at home) this season. If that stays to form the Chargers we won't have to score much to win, which is good because CJ Motte is still CJ Motte.

Geof, I realize you may not be at liberty to say, but what's the word on Joey Marooney? Any chance he re-commits? He's really starting to play well now that he's getting some ice time in Green Bay. With Houcher, Beaulieu, Salerno, and Wilcox already in the fold, Marooney would cap off a very solid forward recruiting class. Best we'd have in recent memory IMO.

I haven't gotten the story on him, but I'm guessing that we still have a shot. I probably won't be able to say too much.

Michael — I think that taking points off of Ferris is very realistic given that we split in BR this year.

Blargle. We're still in OK shape, but man points would have been real nice. MUST get some vs. Alaska.

I think that it's entirely realistic that Anchorage won't win a game the rest of the year — maybe they split with Fairbanks. That means that they can't catch the Chargers. But a win in Huntsville is more realistic than one in BG.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Reading the WCHA TV thread about the odd score display reminded me about something. Is there a reason why WCHA scores are not displayed at the VBC (Veeb)? They have their fancy-schmancy video screens and could display league scores, at least occasionally, during a game. Particularly with the playoff implications this seems like a good idea, for next year at least. Yes, I know, lots of people can/will/might check scores on their phones but displaying a score for the crowd could allow for a collective response. Not to mention, it just reenforces the fact that the Chargers are in a real deal league now.

Chargers not playing in a vacuum anymore! Thoughts?

Do you do any announcements on those? We don't have the benefit of a cool board in Mankato, but at the end of each period, the PA gives us "Scores from around the WCHA." It's sort of our tradition to hold off going for beer until those are read, unless you need to make a bathroom run, in which case you sneak out with about 10 seconds left in the period.

There is no announcement. An announcement in conjunction with an occasional score display would be great. Sometimes it feels like UAH forgot what it was like to be in a league during those wilderness years. My hope is that the VBC game experience continues to improve in this regard. I feel like the more they highlight the league the more fans will be invested and pumped up during home series. The Chargers need to create some traditions like this to build on the overall experience.
