UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

This is Parents Weekend and yesterday all the parents were invited to the President's house for a "get together". Today the parents visited the locker room and facilities around practice. Tonight is Senior Night so be here to salute our seniors that have experienced the craziest four years a hockey player can experience! They came here looking forward to four years of good hockey; what they got was a little hockey, the demise of the program, total uncertainty, the resurrection of the program, then the huge task of rebuilding a program all the while showing extreme tenacity, perseverance and leadership. For this we should be very thankful. Kudos to them in the extreme!!!

Here are a few shots of the crowd in the locker room visiting their kid's locker.

A shot of the seniors with their dads (minus one).

Okay all you "armchair refs" out there. From last nights game against Fairbanks, here is a 3-shot sequence of a check that resulted in Jeff Vanderlugt being charged with a 5-minute major and game misconduct for "Checking from Behind". What do you think? Notice that you can see the front of the Fairbanks player's jersey (the big "A") throughout the check...

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

It's that time of year when junior seasons start wrapping up, and just because I haven't done it in awhile I thought I'd give an update on our recruits for this upcoming 2015-2016 season. I've followed our boys pretty closely and honestly believe this is the best class UAH has brought in in the last 10 or so years. I don't think we're done quite yet either. Hope we can get Joey Marooney to recommit or get another strong forward like him. But anyway, here's what I think will be next year's incoming class: (1) Brandon Salerno F, (2) Jetlan Houcher F, (3) Austin Beaulieu F, (4) Kurt Gosselin D, (5) Cam Knight D, (6) John Teets D, and (7) Adam Wilcox F (don’t think Roberts Smits is committed anymore). Connor Wood, Ted Rotenberger, and Ivan Bondarenko all likely will need another year or two of junior before they're ready.

Thanks! I'll post this next week on uahhockey.com (like I did with your recruiting roundup earlier this season).

Nothing like this to get one geeked up for next season already! :)

Or, more importantly, you DON'T see the number on the back -- the "behind" part of "checking from behind."

NOT that a penalty shouldn't have been called, or that it shouldn't have been a major -- it was a rough hit and the photos show it (great job as usual, but the way). But it shouldn't have been checking from behind and the automatic game misconduct that went with it.

Clarification: Vanderlugt got a game misconduct, meaning he was only out for the rest of Friday's game. If it were a game disqualification, he would have been out for tonight (which would have STUNK for Senior Night).

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Maybe Boarding or Charging, but a Checking from BEHIND is laughable on that play.

I groaned and called boarding as soon as it happened. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boarding_(ice_hockey)

About five minutes before the short-handed game-tying goal, I got disgusted with UAH's lack of hustle. It was as though they had gotten bored with their own style of play and decided that Carmine was going to win the game for them regardless.

While they have improved this season, that has been the most frustrating part about special teams. That was the eighth shorthanded goal allowed this season, which is tied for most in the country (Bemidji State has also allowed eight). Heck, last season we only allowed four.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Okay, so it seems that USCHO no longer allows photos to be displayed within posts so here are the links to the remaining photos I promised from the Ferris series. These are from Saturday's game.

you can just use the html img tag instead.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Well, that was a disappointing end to a pretty exciting game. Now we have to root for the Nanooks.

UAH gets into the playoffs if:

* Gets at win or tie at Bowling Green OR
* Alaska-Anchorage gets a loss or tie at home vs. Alaska OR
* Lake Superior State is swept at home vs. Ferris State

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

I strongly doubt our ability to get points in Ohio unless Bergeron rests his players. That said, they want to stay up in PWR, so losing to us would hurt.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

And ... dang, y'all. We did a great job of getting the points we needed on the road in the Soo and have looked bad in all four of the final games at home. We've gone from being in 6th if we swept Ferris to playing for our lives and praying for help. I'm disappointed after the run the team had in December and January.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

While the effort on Friday was underwhelming, they worked hard from beginning to end on Saturday.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Clearly you haven't been watching us lately. I'm predicting a split.

No, but I've watched us blow four games to opponents who aren't as good as the Falcons. Sure, you blew one to the Seapups, but you were in Anchorage.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Yeah, with the stinkers we've dropped in the last five games, we're going to be two-and-out.

GFM

I don't know how optimistic I would be even if we were playing well. I just want us to do our best, get the experience, and whatever happens happens. Get ready for 2015-16 and continue take the next step.
