UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Former UAH coach ousted from AHL job:

Sources: Wild fires Iowa coach Kurt Kleinendorst, re-hires John Torchetti as replacement

The Wild has tabbed John Torchetti as Kleinendorst’s replacement, according to sources, and he will be on the ice to coach the Baby Wild during Tuesday’s practice. Torchetti, 50, who won a Stanley Cup as a Chicago Blackhawks assistant in 2010, returns to the Wild after coaching the Houston Aeros to back-to-back postseason berths. He was supposed to relocate with the team to Des Moines, but he exercised an out clause to take a job in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League last year.

Since it's on like Donkey Kong I'll have to order the Wcha tv for the Friday game. Geof do you announce the games ?

I did last year. I quit after the season. Funny, they called me 10 days before to see if I would this year. If my old "partner" Chris Davis is doing the games, well ... sorry.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

UAH is 0-29-1 in their last 30 Division I home contests. The tie came against Mankato in Hastings's second game as head coach. Hanging with those guys gave me a false hope for that season and the next.

Put that on the bulletin board in the locker room, guys. The boys went out and did something last weekend that happened in five years. THEY need this. The fans need it, but the players need it more.

The WCHA had noted it, and the coaches had, too (because Jack Hittinger told me that Corbs said something to him about it): UAH hasn't had a lossless weekend since our last season in the CHA when we swept Niagara at home in January 2010. Folks with better memories than me will recall offhand that UAH was off a week before traveling to Monteagle Ridge (heya, 5hole) to play the Purps, only to be called home because of the Amy Bishop shooting.

I already corrected Geof via email, but it's 0-27-3 in our last 30 D-I home contests. We also had the tie vs. Alaska-Anchorage last year, and the tie vs. Air Force two seasons ago.

That's correct, but UAH did win the Friday night game at Niagara before being called home. They ended up playing three games at Niagara two weeks later.

And they won the Sunday game, which says to me that they got the series sweep for the first roadie. ;) [Thanks for correcting me on the record.] I know why they pulled the kids home, but ... well, I guess they would have stayed if they weren't going back later that month. Oh, latter-day CHA scheduling...

Oh, and since we mentioned the Bishop shooting: thanks again to Ferris for doing a moment of silence the next year on the anniversary.

Congratulations to the Chargers earning the split tonight. They played hard all weekend.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Nice to get that home monkey off your back! I hesitate to reduce a game to one stat, but when one team goes 3 for 3 on the PP, and the other goes 0 for 8, that seems to be the story.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Actually, UAH was 2-for-3, LSSU was 0-for-10:
http://collegehockeystats.net/1415/boxes/malhlss1.n15

I'm thrilled. 20-game home winless streak, over. 31-game home winless streak against Division I opponents, over. Heck, it was our first 5-goal game against a D-I team in nearly four years. Hey, we're 2-2-2 in our last six! :)

Carmine Guerriero got back-to-back starts, which surprised me (I wasn't seeing much of a reason not to continue starting Larose on Saturdays), but he played well again.

Now a trip to Ferris then hosting Michigan Tech. I dare say the difficulty level is ramping up again.

But for now...YAY!

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Okay, I was wrong about Larose eventually pulling ahead. I'm betting that Carmine will get every start until he throws up a stinker and/or looks too tired to play both. I talked to him after the game, and he didn't look gassed. He's cool and with it — different demeanor than last year.

The penalty situation was somehow worse — I mean, Struky took four minors including the double — but the boys were with it. The PK was good, but man, the Lakers' PP was pretty bad at moving the puck. Plenty of teams drop 40 shots on UAH, but the Chargers allowed only 25 SOG despite killing all those penalties. That's a solid effort regardless of the quality of the opponent. I feel for Laker fans, because it's probably going to be a very long season for them, too.

It was so nice to recap a home win.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Carmine played great all weekend. As far as the Lakers go they didn't play well all weekend. No idea why but they just didn't bring it.

That was the first time I'd watched them this year, but that's not the kind of game that I expected from Ciotti, Perfecto, et al. based on what I saw last season. Defiel wasn't very impressive in shutting us down on Friday, because we didn't give him a lot of second-chance attempts, and then ... well, 5 GA.

I agree about Deifel,he has a hard time putting together a complete game.

What it all comes down to is your Chargers came out and worked hard all weekend so congratulations on the split.
