UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Recruit Update:
Brandon Salerno Pickering (OJHL) 13 gp 11/13/24. Absolutely tearing it up. Appears to have regained his confidence after a dismal year with Waterloo.

Austin Beaulieu Wichita Falls (NAHL) 12 gp 8/5/13. Having a great year thus far. Should come in and have an immediate impact. Great speed and vision carrying over from his TPH days.

Cam Knight (D) Wichita Falls (NAHL) 12 gp 3/9/12. Also having an awesome year. His size and skating should have him pushing for top 4 minutes. Great to see a dman with these kind of numbers in the NA.

Connor Wood Rio Grande Valley (NAHL) 12 gp 0/3/3. Either dropped or traded from Amarillo. Not a good sign. He's a feisty, competitive kid so hopefully that'll start to show on the scoresheet. May need an extra year of juniors.

Roberts Smits Janesville (NAHL) 8 gp 2/2/4. Also dropped or traded from Amarillo. Starting to pull it together. Janesville has a bit more firepower up front so I'm betting those numbers will go up. He continues to improve and he may be on the move back to Bloomington (USHL) where he began the year.

Joey Marooney Sioux Falls (USHL) 8 gp 1/1/2. Playing in easily the most competitive league in the U.S., not bad numbers considering the jump from MN high school hockey. Hope he can start lighting the lamp a bit more. May be the next Max McHugh. Promising prospect regardless.

Ivan Bondarenko Wenatchee (NAHL) 7 GP 2/0/2. Seems to have trouble cracking the lineup. He's one of the youngest players in the league and will definitely be in juniors for another year before he comes to school, so there's really no cause for concern. Could be a big time prospect for us this time next year.

Well, the year has started out tough for the boys. From what I've seen puck possession is easily the biggest problem. Guys like Brears and Soquila must pick it up. They have the skill to do so, its just a matter of doing it. Also, I think I'm now on team Carmine. He's been a bit more consistent and has kept us in it more than Rosey. Just my .02 cents.

Thanks for the update! Can we use this recruit update for UAHHockey.com? Send me (m@uahhockey.com) and Geof (g@uahhockey.com) an email if it's OK (so we can properly attribute you).

I'm on Team Carmine on Fridays and Team Rosie on Saturdays. ;)

A tie. I will not take any point for granted, even in non-conference conference games.

Carmine Guerriero, man. Hoping for another encore from Larose tomorrow.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Considering that Northern Michigan is undefeated and has a 14-4 goal advantage against all opponents, congrats to UAH.

That said, you must not emerge from Omaha with any "points" December 20th or 21st.

We are sick to death here of UAH wreaking havoc on us in Pairwise.

Statman and Geof it's absolutely okay if you use my update. Don't worry about attributing it to me, I don't want any credit.

I forgot one player:

Teddy Rotenberger (D) Topeka (NAHL) 6 gp 0/1/1. Seems to be having a tough time cracking the lineup, which is troubling. I know he's drawn rave reviews for his character so I doubt this will be too much of a drawback for him. But he needs to play and produce if he's going to really contribute once he gets to UAH. An extra year of juniors may be best for him. Time will tell.

Great tie last night against a strong Northern Michigan team. Carmine was excellent in net, made several awesome saves. Love seeing Salhany light the lamp. He's got some serious burners. Hope they keep coming. Does anyone know if Vanderlugt is banged up? We need him. Also, got to improve on face-offs. Saulnier was the only one with a 50% winning percentage. I played with Piercy growing up and know he can do better than what he showed last night. He can be a wizard out there on the draw. It would be huge for our possession numbers.

Here's one I saw tweeted from the Thunder: Adam Wilcox, a forward from Alpharetta, Ga., who was with Fort McMurray and now with Fairbanks of the NAHL.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Your right I missed that one. He must have just committed in the past two weeks. I remember him from his TPH days. Was a serious prospect a few years back, he was on Dubuque's (USHL) affiliate list and played there a few games when Vinny Saponari (NTDP alum and Atlanta native) and Johnny Gaudreau (Hobey Baker Winner and current Calgary Flame) were there. He's got good size and can skate. I haven't seen him play in years, but the numbers are slightly lacking. May be a Brent Fletcher, diamond-in-the-rough-type.

I really think we're going to have to continue to keep pulling in these Southern kids from TPH like we are, and getting a guy or two from the USHL every year, BUT we cannot forget about the Canadian tier-2 leagues like the OJHL, BCHL, AJHL, and CCHL. Hopefully with Salerno in the OJ we'll be sending Gavin or Matty to scout some and watch him. These leagues aren't scouted nearly as much as the USHL or NAHL for college hockey. They're often simply alternative/developmental leagues for Major Junior. It's in these leagues, IMO, that we can find top six NCAA scorers that other, bigger schools will overlook. We'll never be able to compete with the Michigans, BCs, North Dakotas of the world in recruiting, so we're going to have to look harder to find guys.

Right now, we've got some good prospects in Salerno, Beaulieu, Marooney, and Knight. These forwards, however, are small; all are under 5'10ish. Hopefully Smits develops into a solid scorer in the NA and comes in and contributes, OR we recruit a bigger scorer. Knight may be the best dman prospect we've had in awhile if he keeps doing what he's doing. At 6'1 190 and producing points, he'll be a formidable two-way threat.

Tough weekend for the boys. Ready for Prince, Brears, and Soquila to get going. They've been some kinda quiet. Carmine might deserve himself a weekend of his own. I know it's only one weekend, and Larose got left out to dry on a few occasions, but going with the hot hand could establish some momentum for Carmine and the boys. The numbers certainly don't lie. Just where my heads at.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

I know that they're still scouting the Canadian leagues. They're also not worrying about size so much at this point as ability to play. I think that we won't see another Wade Schools at UAH under this coaching staff. One of the things that would help us — and I've been working on it a little — is engaging our alumni back in Canada to do a little bit of pre-scouting of these kids at 16 and 17. We need a guy like Ger Overton that knows those leagues out west. It's too bad that Westy's network went with him to Fairbanks.

Rotenberger now with Springfield (NAHL) likely in search of more PT. Good to hear. Positive sign for his development.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Well done! It really helps the players' attitudes to get one like this, so they know they don't need to pitch a shutout to win.
