UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

I didn't think about Mark Osiecki (ex-OSU), nor did Jay Woodcroft's name come up in my mind. Woody's candidacy would be interesting, as he's been away from college hockey for quite some time, and was a D-I player only when we played a transitional independent year and played more D-II schools than D-I.

If Jay has aspirations of being an NHL head coach, he probably shouldn't leave the NHL.

Gwoz and Oz would be that, but they've both been HC at much, much bigger schools than UAH, and I doubt that they'd want to stay in Alabama for more than a few years.

I'd be surprised if Gwozdecky is in Alabama for a few hours just to interview. :p

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Man oh man oh man... what next! Kurt never seemed comfortable in this job to me. He didn't seem to like the interaction with the fans and supporters away from a structured event. JMHO I'm really getting tired of having to get used to new people and such... some real stability would be a godsend to this program. I'm really for the minimum five year contract with the next coach (at our option) with the added bonus of a firing squad if he quits before five... again JMHO. We had two coaches for 23 years and now its a revolving door... as I said above, what next?

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Getting off topic...per the UAH press release, AD E.J. Brophy said that Kleinendorst recruited nine incoming freshmen, I only count eight on Heisenberg's list including Brandon Carlson who is not listed. Any idea who the 9th fella is?

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Gavin Morgan was coached by Gwoz in Denver.

Did they have a good relationship if so maybe a little chance.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

My choice is former player and assistant coach John McCabe to be the next coach.
I can get behind Caber as he has HC experience; would have great support from alumni, boosters, and long-time fans. He would also likely never be looking for greener pastures. As for his winning ability, well, in the latter years of the Ross era he and Westy pretty much ran the practices and developed the game-plans, most of them winners. Not only that, he bleeds Blue!

I knew that you'd make an appearance sooner or later.

This is a very simple field: those who would be coming in from outside to stay only who knows how long (Oz, Shyiak, Gwoz), and those who have ties to the school and would be very likely to stick around (West, McCabe, Williams). I don't know that Dennis is even coaching these days, which is a shame. I'm not sure if he'd be interested in coming back or not.

With this post, I won't say any more until finalists are announced.

He's done an amazing job in Amarillo, turning them into an NAHL powerhouse. He's your guy, if he's interested in coming back, in my opinion.

Right now there are three people I'd like to see get the opportunity to apply for the job:
1. Current AC Gavin Morgan - played for Gwoz, knows what a big time college team is all about, has put down roots in Hsv., would likely stay awhile.
2. Former UAH AC current Alaska AC Lance West - now has the important outside experience in a bigger program, has won at UAH as both a player and coach, if he has gotten over his previous rejection by his alma mater.
3. Former UAH AC, current Finlandia HC John McCabe - also has outside experience but as a HC, is a proven winner as a UAH player and coach, strong local support, would be stable with local roots.

If these guys don't get a shot at the job then its a darn shame...

I have no idea why I forgot that he was in Amarillo. Thanks for the reminder. That's embarrassing.

The previous Finlandia coach didn't seem to have trouble winning. Was a great atmosphere when they hosted the league tourney. In fact, both prior coaches won at Finlandia.

I do like the Williams idea. Willie is a terrific, energetic guy. Outstanding coach.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Well this is an interesting development, considering the history between Lou and Altenkirch and our newly-vacant head coaching position.

Lamoriello said there will likely be one change to the coaching staff this off-season because “there’s a strong chance of one of our assistants taking a head coaching job (not in the NHL), which is a very positive thing for him. He’d have a head coaching job, which he hasn’t had (before).”

I don't see why Kleinendorst would go back to a place that he's already been in a job that he's already held. The quote you had is for an assistant leaving for a HC job, not Kurt coming in to that job with HC experience, which he already had in Binghamton.

I think that link was for someone who may be in line for the UAH job, not for where Kleinendorst is going.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

The trend is to promote an AC coach.

Maine-- Red G.
OSU-- Steve R.
UCON-- Mike K.
Mankato- Mike H.
MTU- Mel P.

Looking at the trend of what kind of coaches are hired my bet would be

Gavin Morgan
