UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

That he might be back in the WCHA, or that they said Gwoz would be on the "short" list?

Back In the WCHA. If he wants to stay out west coaching this might be his best chance to stay around for ten years building a program to respectabilty. Think about it we don't see many college openings and I would venture to guess he went down the list and didn't find many openings In the years to come.

Plus I don't think any of the openings this year went to previous college head coaches. Maybe he thinks he won't get Denver type money from anywhere else.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

And here I thought I'd never have to see him again. :(

If he didn’t like going to Anchorage (along with other WCHA locations), I imagine his head would explode if he travels to Fairbanks for games this January. Ironically funny. :D

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

I'll be the first to congratulate UAH if they hire Gwoz. But I don't see any way that this is going to happen. From wanting to get paid more at an already well-paid position at the 7-time national champion school...to a long shot candidate for the Avs job....to Alabama? It just doesn't make a lot of sense, particularly in light of the fact that the UAH program was just recently resuscitated from its deathbed. I'm pretty surprised that Gwoz is even a candidate. Only thing that would make sense to me, is if Gwoz is really wants to build up a program from the ground up to a national contender. He seemed interested in doing that at UConn. But I can't fathom how a school such as UAH is going to give Gwoz a package that he couldn't get from DU and some other huge schools that were courting Gwoz while he was at DU.

I think Gwoz was once quoted as saying traveling to Tech in Houghton, MI was worse than Anchorage, but Fairbanks ....

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Is it that hard to believe that it might happen? Gwoz was let go from his job. He seemed quite interested in, but didn't get the coaching jobs at Connecticut, Alaska, or Maine. There is only one head coaching job left open at the D1 level. I'm not missing something am I? So unless he wants to either sit and wait or there are professional jobs that we aren't aware of, I'd say Gwoz will take any pay that comes reasonably close at Alabama and be quite satisfied.

Now, he may not want to stay there very long, but that's a risk Huntsville has to weigh.

I mean no disrespect to UAH--but it would be hard for ME to believe. Maybe UAH will get some big donors and come up with something incredible. But as someone points out below, DU is paying him next year, and I don't think he is very desperate for a job. Plus, he is from Thunder Bay, the midwest and Denver. It might take some creative convincing for Gwoz to get his wife to move to Alabama.

What makes you say that Gwoz had ANY interest in the Alaska job? He showed some interest in Maine and UConn, but that's it. Gwoz had no interest in UAA, and UAA would have no way of landing him. Let's remember here, Gwoz was one of the best paid coaches in the country at DU, in a city that he liked, at a tradition rich hockey school where he won 2 national titles. It's a long way from there to Alaska and Alabama, folks.

EDIT: I think DU is paying Gwoz next year, but now can't find a reference to that. Anyway, here is a link to an interview with Gwoz that I hadn't seen before:

So much for that. Go figure right after I stick my neck out I am officially shot down as wrong. LOL.

As for Gwoz and Alaska, his name has been thrown around so much I can't remember what's official and what's speculation. I'm apparently just all kinds of wrong.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

Dang it. I was hoping Gwoz would turn UAH into a national power. Then the NCHC would kick out St. Cloud and bring in UAH as a replacement.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

If UAH spends the money some on this thread seem to think will be spent the program should be A1.
Gwoz at this point is dragging a lot of drama along with him.
Corbett was the favorite of many for the UAA job and if UAH can get him the program will be on solid footing.
Just random thoughts from an outsider.

If I had to guess between the two, I'm guessing Eaves. I'm not sure MSU is ready to give up on an alum quite yet.

Has Poapst applied for the UAH position? Has he indicated a desire to be a college head coach? No doubt he would be a good candidate, but if his goal is to work in the NHL, he's a lot closer to it working in the Blackhawks system than he would be in Huntsville.
