UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

UAH has all the opportunity in the world to be a WCHA power house with the right coach and approach. Warm weather, good arena and facility, good fan support (should have it now anyways)... oh yeah, did I mention the weather already? Where would you rather play all things being equal? Huntsville or LSSU? Northern Michigan? Alaska (x2)? BGSU? FSU? Call me crazy but I think the list of coaches interested in this job will be better then most think and with the right staff and recruiting UAH could be a dangerous program!

One thing that would greatly aid the recruiting is a commitment to flying everywhere but Bowling Green and Ferris State. I hope that is in the cards for UAH.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

The "weather" has to be a major draw of UAH, especially during the winter. I would imagine that a guy can play golf most of the year in Huntsville. That has to help since a lot of the hockey players that I know play golf.

I can only say that it was one of many factors on the checklist in our case - tho the placement on the list varied between the kid & I lol. Along with the golf was girls in daisy dukes and their southern accents - seems to be plenty of northern guys finding marriage with locals in the air too.

Huntsville has a lot of good qualities, with conference membership they could be a real sleeper within a few years.

Glad to see golf seems to be a big draw for recruits, new coaches and visting teams.

WHat a good sell golf and hockey.

I'd like to see a "where are they now" for the north Alabama hockey brides. Assuming this is our Kristina, here's one. http://thenorthstarballet.org/School/Summer-Dance-Intensive.html

The wedding beside the water at Wheeler with Latvian traditions for the reception was quite an event. At least Heather's been fortunate to keep the Bowen clan in the area. Wasn't it Roy Nichols who lost a daughter to Edmonton Alberta early in the UAH hockey history?

Johnny McCabe dragged his poor wife to Finlandia. Also, I think Nathan is done with the cold at this point in his life. A number of our guys get the womenfolk to go back north with him, but Erin Denny kept Kevin Ridgeway in her hometown of St. Louis. Then there are guys like Matt Montes and Ryan Brown that stay and get married a few years after that. [Tes just got engaged a few weeks ago.]

Dave, I hope that you will clarify your comments on the travel. Are you saying that our spending the money to fly our travel parties to all but BGSU and FSU is what you want to see?

GFM: First, careful on how you characterize Finlandia, that's my hometown they're living in...lol.

As for the travel, my hope is that UAH will fly the Chargers everywhere but BG and Ferris. I'm well aware of the agreement they have for the incoming schools, which is the same as the Alaskas as well and seems to be pretty fair. Now that UAH has the chance to be stronger competition for good recruits, the thought of 18-20-22 hour bus trips could turn off some decent recruits.

But the first two have stayed and the third might.

Hey, I'm just saying that the weather is different. ;)

I would love for us to have the money to do all of that. Our giving campaign can make that happen.

Who wouldnt enjoy a nice 18 hour bus ride from hot Alabama to frozen Minnesota. If I was a recruit I would be excited about missing school and sitting in a bus for along time watching Happy Gilmore with my hockey buddies. The long bus rides remind me of the movie Slap Shot with Paul Newman. Lots of good times in the bus and good stories and memories. Dave I cant understand why you hate bus rides.

ive never said I hate bus rides. Quite the contrary. I've got about 200,000 miles under my belt. But when those rides get beyond 9 or 10 hours that's where they become cumbersome. And a long ride or two, like 12 or 13 coming back is quite doable. But when you're talking 18 or 20 and you can't leave until 7pm on Wednesday due to the 48 hour rule, and the players have to spend the night sleeping on a bus instead of a bed, it's not good for anyone. And I've been on the best and worst of sleepers, and the best are only a lesser degree of bad sleep.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

I have heard an unnamed UAH AC joke that one reason that we like BCHL kids is because they're used to being on a bus. The kids that come here know what they're in for. Do we lose guys that don't want the travel? Perhaps, but if we do, they're probably going to play out east anyway, right? We all know how bad travel out west is.

That's why UAA only travels east. one trip northeast but most southeast.

Good thing Huntsville is close to Bowling Green.

Re: UAH Hockey 2012-13: Still breathing

It's sad that this is what gets me to ignore you, but it's this. Cumulative dunderheadedness on your part has brought me to this point.

GFM
What took you so long, Southern Hospitality? If he shows up north I will take him to the woods to meet Mr. Brown Bear.
