UAA @ Ferris State

Re: UAA @ Ferris State

Marketing ploy not to be associated with Fairbanks.

That is what we have said all along, hence the UA_ nickname. And wolfman, ease up ... we love giving _airbanks crap, don't defend them!

Re: UAA @ Ferris State

No dog in this fight, but actually it makes sense. UC-Berkely are the "California Bears". UM TC (U of MN Twin Cities) are the Minnesota Gophers. Just two I can think of; maybe some others will possibly have more examples.

In 25 years of following college hockey, I don't think I ever heard the Gophers program referred to as the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

Apply to go to school there and you'll see it's the twin cities campus.

Re: UAA @ Ferris State

The theory I have for naming your school by the "state", is based on whoever was established first. Wisconsin, Nevada (Which is in Reno, hence UNLV), Minnesota, UA_, and Cal, are all the OLDEST institutions in the state.

UAA has created their own brand; just like UNLV. Many would say UAA and UNLV are more popular than their intra-state rivals.... without having the name.

That's the point I was tryng to get across. It just isn't that odd and certainly not anything to get bunched undergarments about.

Yes you are absolutely correct. UAF is the first and original UA. Then when the UA system grew, it became UAF. Has nothing to do with them not wanting to represent Fairbanks which is an absurd notion. Just like UNLV and Nevada is UAA and Alaska. Even Nebraska is UNL but sports teams simply Nebraska. Alaska Nanooks fans still chant UAF sometimes but that is OK. It makes a lot of sense and UAF should have that title! UAA still better though! Hee hee :-)

I don't care about "oldest" or any crap like that. I have never, and will never, ever refer to UAF as "Alaska". They do not, in any shape or form, represent Alaska or the University of Alaska system. They represent the University of Alaska Fairbanks and should be refered to as such. It was a marketing ploy established so they would not be confused with the University of Arkansas Fayetteville. The only reason they can continue to use it is because the UA Board of Regents is located in Fairbanks! And the BOR favors UAF over the two other campuses.

tl;dr They're *ing UAF!

I guess undergarments are bunched! Probably people in Nebraska feel the same way about their schools.

You're absolutely correct - they aren't the UMTC Gophers, they're the Minnesota Gophers who are based at the UM TC campus They're not the UAF Nanooks, they're the Alaska Nanooks based at the UAF campus.

Man I hope I don't post again on this! But I hope my point makes sense - it's not that unusual for a campus to take on the state name for their team, and it sounds like in Alaska, it's kept with tradition, the oldest campus does it. Not necessarily the biggest or best You guys can all ****** on each other about that, although it's great to see that the second ("best") might actually be decided in a couple of weeks.

Alaskans: can we all agree that it would be GREAT if both AK teams got home ice? Make the other teams travel for a change, both win, both get to the tourney and bump off MSU and Ferris, play for a NCAA berth!

It's only a matter of time and the Freegans going to rename the campus after the "Farmer's Loop West Mall"
