The reason why Dr. Cobb didn't want Ice at the AAC was because he always had it that the University would build a SEPERATE Ice rink for hockey. Even TODAY if you look at the FY19-25 strategic plan, there is 120M planned for an ICE RINK on campus. Does that mean it will happen? Prob not with the Alaska budget current as of today. However, Since UAA Hockey had a decent arena to play in (I use "decent" loosely), and UAA Basketball/Volleyball/Gymnastics had a crappy WFSC, Cobb championed a basketball only facility first. THEN, a hockey arena on campus. I thought he had a very strategic vision to get all our teams to D-1 at the time. I had NUMEROUS conversations with him on this matter and it was a good plan. Originally, the AAC was supposed to be a 4,000 seat arena connected to a 7,500 seat hockey arena situated on the corner of Northern Lights and Bragraw on North Campus. It was planned with Dorms and a Fieldhouse. But, there was huge opposition to this plan from the tree huggers. So, we got what we got. I personally think the AAC is a tremendous facility and will ONE DAY propel all of our sports to D-1. It was just voted the BEST ARENA in D-2, and better than some D-1 arenas. I also personally believe one day we will get a hockey arena on campus. It may be years from now, but will happen. I am hoping (in my lifetime, when the current UA leadership is cleared out) we will see a football program. Not holding my breath, but really hope one day.
