This is something my mom instilled in me from a young age. I think I was about 8 when I (innocently!) referred to the people of Niger as, well...and not the correct "Nigerians". Needless to say, that got corrected very quickly.
It later came out that this was something her parents instilled in her, and bear in mind, she was born in 1955 to conservative Catholics, and my grandfather was a Marine. Dad is another story, but he came from a different, much more blue collar part of metro Detroit. So it wasn't until he was a teenager, and then went off to Ann Arbor, that he "evolved" on the issue.
