TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

I really like Psych, but other than that, I think the shows on USA are pretty meh, and I've give quite a few a chance.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

I really do love USA, they seem so good at creating interesting engaging shows, it seems like every one I take the time to watch for a week or 2 engages me enough to want to watch more...now since I'm out of town without a dvr, that hasn't happen much but White Collar, Suits, Royal Pains, etc all are a good way to waste an hour...or even better, a show worth following week to week.

Because they are not trying to make every show be everything to everyone like so much of the crap that ends up on NBC. Plus, procedurals on network channels just don't usually use the long term background storylines that are common to nearly all of the USA shows.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

Thoughts on Copper?

I saw it and loved it. It's definitely a "threshold" program with a lot more stuff in it than I thought. Very gritty, but very good.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

Or Burn Notice which, IMHO, is the best show on TV (Breaking Bad is a close second).
Burn Notice, Royal Pains, Suits and 1, 2, & 3 in any particular order. Right now, though, Suits is hitting home runs with one at bat left.

I just wish they were longer than 10 episodes.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

In my opinion, if we're ranking TV shows, right now its:

1. Breaking Bad
.
.
.
.
2. Everyone else

I believe that many of the shows do a 10 episode summer segment followed by a 6 episode winter segment for a 16 episode season in total. The start/end dates always seem to be staggered so that it seams that something new is always playing.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

No mention of The Office officially ending after this season? I'm surprised.

Anyways, it was 2 seasons too late. Both John Krasinski and Ed Helms (full movie schedules) will be in short supply this upcoming season, as will Mindy Kaling (new show). Apparently they're planning on bleeding the show dry, by creating a spinoff series revolving around Dwight Schrute.

I could never get into Burn Notice though I tried. I used to watch Royal Pains regularly, but I've skipped most of this season, and the premise of Suits just never interested me. I like to catch Psych in reruns, but never make a point to watch it during its first airings.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

I'd actually put Sons of Anarchy, Dexter and The Walking Dead on par with Californication, with Mad Men way behind that group.

I can't comment on those shows, as I have not watched them. I will say my expectations of SoA are above Mad Men, and below Californication. I don't really have an interest in the latter two shows.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

I feel like I'm the only person who really enjoys the Newsroom. Pretty much the only show keeping me from dumping HBO.

I think it's been getting better every episode despite the critics panning it. All I can think is they are trying to compare this to other Sorkin projects. The show has its flaws but it's bright spots make up for it.

You should just start watching Sons of Anarchy so you can tell us we're right about how good it is already. :D

Kepler likes it...proving you have no taste ;)

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

I haven't really gotten into the USA shows, although I do like the lighter tones that they seem to present themselves with.

My list for the best show on tv (approximate order):

Breaking Bad
Louie
Mad Men (although I've only seen a few episodes, it's really good)
Community
Sons of Anarchy
The Walking Dead (which could be so much better, but isn't)

Shows that look great, but I haven't seen them:
Game of Thrones
Newsroom
Californication
The Good Wife

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

I've been watching Newsroom. I like it, don't love it. I want it to be better than it is. It has so much potential.

Watched the season finale of Political Animals. I really enjoyed that. It was presented as a mini-series but I hope it gets picked up. Another good USA show. I watch pretty much all of USA's shows. They take over my summer. White Collar has been great, Covert Affairs is passable. I like Necessary Roughness and I gave Common Law a whirl. That show totally grew on me during its run.

Strike Back returned last week on Cinemax. I'm slightly obsessed with it. And Sullivan Stapleton. *fans self*

I'm with Scarlet on it -- mixed. Some of it is very good (the premise, the drunk Sam Waterson, the interactions with the shrink, the guts of the newsroom process). Some of it is awful (the romance arcs, the unrelentingly smarmy, predictable and imbecilic portrayal of every woman on the show).

I'd give it a soft B with a chance to both improve or deteriorate even more.

I don't know if it has anywhere to go. And Sorkin's shtick is already wearing thin, and I never watched any of his other shows.

The main thrust, the criticism of current "news" (read: pablum by idiots, of idiots, and for idiots), is on point. The best thing about the show is that it uses actual footage of network news malpractice. The cutaway to the CNN moderator at the New Hampshire debate asking Bachmann "Elvis or Johnny Cash" summed up news coverage in this country now. That's what passes for vetting of presidential candidates by our media. And since an informed electorate is required for a functioning representative government, it sums up the death throes of our democracy.

I was really disappointed by the Copper pilot, but I had completely misunderstood what it was trying to be. I thought it was going to be Gangs of New York Meets Sherlock (which would be fantastic). It is actually Gangs of New York Meets 24 (which is probably interesting to many people, but not my thing).

I'll give it a couple of episodes to see where it goes. It may turn out to be very good at its mission; I just don't care about that mission, it's been done a hundred times before. It would help if every scene wasn't a cliche, as it was in the pilot.

Also, does every whore on the planet have to have a heart of gold? Really?! Curse you Josh Whedon for reviving that old tripe.

I was expecting it to be Gangs of New York meets CSI...so I was off-base too? :p
