TV: One Person's Trash...

Re: TV: One Person's Trash...

Netflix sent me email saying they added a show I may like- the i-land. I googled it and holy cow, all reviews say it may be the worst show they’ve ever seen. Not sure I have it in me to hate-watch.

We’re a month away from the Breaking Bad movie. I’ll be watching. Nice filler before return of better call Saul

I cannot wait until the movie. And the delay with Saul.....ARGH.

At least Mayans is still dam good. A little intro of sorts with Felipe and Dita this week...NO idea what is going on there, outside of tinfoil hat theories (no, I don't read fanboards/etc).

Re: TV: One Person's Trash...

I dunno whether I care about the BB movie or not. I liked where it ended I just feel this wasnt needed.

Netflix’s ratings system died when they went to the thumbs up/down and the “% your match” instead of the stars. It was no longer about giving you the content the people liked, it was about pimping their utter garbage.

^^^^^^

I want the stars back. The percent match has been pretty spot on for me, though.

Re: TV: One Person's Trash...

I should also rephrase. It was no longer about delivering ‘good’ content.

The percent match has been abysmal for me. It’s almost always a Netflix show. And when I look it up, it gets absolutely trashed in reviews.

It was never about giving you the content you or others liked. It was ALWAYS a way to pimp stuff they were incentivized to pimp. And Netflix made a killing selling that crap off to the highest bidder.

Re: TV: One Person's Trash...

I rarely watch Netflix anymore. My mom watches a couple of British shows so I keep it around. I don't think we would miss if it I decide to cancel it. I tried to get her into "Downton Abbey" on Amazon but I don't think she even watched the entire debut episode. It is funny to hear her complain that "nothing's on" when we have access to a hundred live channels, Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, HBO, the Roku channel and dozens of free apps. It isn't that there's nothing on, it's that there is too much on and it overwhelms us.

Yeah, they pimp hard. Maybe it's the volume you rate, I dunno. I'm coming up on 2000 (I might have even passed it, will have to check).

The algorithm is pretty solid overall, I think the "thumbs" weaken it. I wish they had the 10 star system. That would really get specific on ratings; however, that would bury a lot of pure crap that people watch. The thumbs basically say "You didn't hate it, so here's this!"

Re: TV: One Person's Trash...

There is a whole chapter about it in my text for Business Analytics...they were data mining before it was cool and they made a killing selling that off to other companies so they could advertise to you. The Netflix Que was just their version of Facebook tailoring ads. People had no idea how much Netflix was giving away.

I heard, and this could be rumor, that they gave away Netflix for life for the winning algorithm developer. It makes sense, although the winner was shorted hardcore in this case, but people like free stuff! ;)

Obviously. But at least the star ratings were a little more transparent. If something was garbage, you could tell before you wasted your time. Now I have no idea what “96% Match!” even means.

I have zero problems giving my data away if it means I get a better product.

The percent match, as I understand it, takes all the movies/shows you've rated and the categories (sometimes as specific as "gritty drama") and then compiles them into an algorithm and states how likely you are to like that possible selection. If all I favorably rated were organized crime movies, then The Godfather would be a 98% match, for example.

Re: TV: One Person's Trash...

I understand what it is. I just don’t care about that. I want to see if it’s a good move or mass produced garbage. Which is most of what comes out of Netflix Studios. I’ll watch Spirited Away even though I hate anime, because it’s a great movie. I’ll watch La La Land because it’s fantastic and i can’t think of any other live action musical I like. I don’t need to watch almost anything DC because I like superhero movies.

If I liked garbage, Netflix Studios would be a 97% match.

It's "those who bought x also bought y." Up-sell tactic.

I do if they didnt ask me.

Re: TV: One Person's Trash...

It’s been in every EULA for the last 20 years. Are you telling me you don’t read every word of them?

Nah I usually go crosseyed right around the second paragraph. One of the many reasons I decided against Law School :D

“You don’t hear much about syphilis these days. It’s the Myspace of STDs”

Gosh i love Succession

Re: TV: One Person's Trash...

Was looking over my Fall TV options and this is what I came up with.

New shows this fall I am trying out.

All Rise -CBS
Bluff City Law - NBC (I love courtroom dramas, sue me)
Batwoman (CW) (I've skipped most of CW's DC offerings but I am not going to skip this one)
Watchmen - HBO
His Dark Materials -HBO
Dublin Murders - Starz

Continuing on with:

How To Get Away With Murder
Criminal Minds (air date for final season unknown)
Blind Spot (air date for final season unknown)
The Black List

Deleting from DVR:

The Gifted (Fox) cancelled. Had two seasons. I watched the first one, not worth watching the second now.
The Passage (Fox) cancelled. Had only one season. I hadn't watched it yet. Going to nuke it now.

EDIT: finally finished Gotham. The first (4) seasons were great. The 5th season was meh. The last episode was fantastic, however.
