We've actually gotten better. In the 19th century rich people took guided poverty tours of the slums. Wealthy Virginians picnicked within sight of Civil War battles to share the "glory."

That was essentially all imperial-era battles. I remember reading about how it was fairly common to have spectators for battles in the 1800s. I suspect the civil war was one of the last wars with that as a thing to do. Now we send reporters in to broadcast it for us.

And Congresspeople from DC. They all had to get the hell out of there when the Union troops got routed at First Manassas.

I binged all five episodes of Chernobyl this weekend. I thought it was good. My first impression was that they got the length of the mini-series right. Five, one hour episodes seemed to fit perfectly for the story.

I'll confess that I don't really know how historically accurate it was, but it certainly seemed plausible they way it was presented. I also thought they did a pretty good job of taking a subject of some complexity like a nuclear power plant melting down and explaining it in a way that most (including me) will understand.

As a side note, my younger brother was actually in the Soviet Union (in Moscow) that summer. As I recall he arrived about a week or two after the incident, so he was generally aware it had happened but didn't really know any details before he arrived. There was no news or discussion of it among those Russians he crossed paths with during his teaching duties that summer.

My wife and I finished Chernobyl last night. It's like nothing has changed in Russian behavior, they just don't learn. But they have taught some tricks to our current regime here.

The current season of Archer hasn't been very good, and I really, really wanted it to be because Reed has said he's leaving after this one.

If you're interested start in on Ep 1 of HBO's accompanying Podcast on YouTube. Each podcast walks through each episode (at around 45 minutes each) nearly scene for scene and they describe in detail what was factual, what was altered slightly and what was completely "fabricated" for the purpose of telling the story.

For instance Khomyuk is a fictional character that was an amalgamation of dozens of scientists that aided in addressing the aftermath. It would have been too complicated to represent them all so they created her to represent their "combined" influence. The courtroom scene was similar - Legasov himself didn't testify (might not have even been present), but Dyatlov's dialogue was supposedly word for word.

When Gorby was in power, and they started to turn to democracy, MANY Russians were mad about it, because it was new and not "their" way of life. Many were actually HAPPY when Putin came into power, because that was the Russia they knew.

New Press Your Luck is...actually pretty decent. Board looks and sounds good, appropriate amounts and spaces, Whammies are acceptable (and there are probably quite a few we haven't seen yet.) Elizabeth Banks keeps the game moving well, but seems to be holding back a bit and hasn't picked up on some of the show's mannerisms/sayings (like saying "Stop at X and a spin" or the obligatory warning about being careful about picking up a third Whammy in round 1) but give her some time.

The extended bonus round worked out better than I thought it would, and the personalized prizes are neat, but we can cut back on the sob stories. Cool part is if you just want straight PYL and don't give a hoot about the bonus game you can just watch the first half-hour.

The new Jessica Jones season dropped tonight. Just watched the first ep, and it makes this season look very promising.

Got through another couple eps. The approach being taken, it's interesting. I like it. One point of the main plot was most likely inevitable, and they gave in, but that is probably a good thing. We'll see how it goes. The secondary characters are really being developed, which I truly enjoy. Some were established, but they are getting to the core of them, almost treating them as main characters, creating a true ensemble cast.

So, MTV is making a Daria spinoff, and they picked Jodie.

I would have much rather seen Trent or Jane Lane.

They were talking about this on The Current (MN Public Radio) the other day. The big question is "why? MTV no longer matters to anyone with a brain." I had to agree with that.
