TV: Give Me That Remote!

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

I've had TV officially ruined for me. Between game of thrones, Westworld, Fargo, House of Cards, The Night Of, Mr. Robot, True Detective, Stranger Things, OITNB.

I struggle to get into any series anymore. We've been so spoiled with amazing television over the last two or three years that you really need to be incredible to stand out.

I really enjoyed Chicago PD, Chicago Fire, Gotham, Lucifer, but even shows like those are becoming hard to watch.

This is why I don't watch too many shows. It really has to grab me from the start, or it has to have been established long enough with tremendous reviews so I can catch up. I never started BB, or Mad Men right away. We have been extremely spoiled, no matter your taste in shows. There have been 1-2 shows minimum for anyone who watches any tv.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

Started watching White Rabbit Project.

Unsurprisingly, it's Mythbusters...but not. Basically, they take a broad topic (thus far I've seen: superhero powers, crazy WW2-era weapon programs, jailbreaks, and scam artists) and each submit 2 ideas/stories, then rank them according to a set of 3 criteria. Not every story gets a scientific method proof of concept, unless it warrants further investigation/would be good TV/has lots of 'splosion potential. Sometimes they just consult experts.

Best thing so far, was Tory Belleci's re-creation of this famous balloon (though the FAA would not allow him to fly it un-tethered, because duh).

Um what? I'm saying we have a bevy of shows to choose from. Not the 1-2 you speak of.

The being ruined part referred to normal TV or broadcast TV. There are so many amazing shows that fillers don't do it anymore.

I was meaning that no matter what your taste is, you will find 1-2 shows that are "must-see." I completely agree this is a golden age of tv.

The sentence before that was meant to give reference to the following sentence.

I'd argue that there's still a ton of filler, but it's mostly in the network comedy realm. Drama is another matter - the standard, rich b*tch PTSO won't do it anymore, unless it has great acting and some unique twist on it (Mad Men being set in a 60s office environment, for instance).

And even Mad Men was mostly critically acclaimed, IIRC. It wasn't like BB or GOT with the audiences. There was a small core group, and that was it. Didn't really hear about it being talked about around the office water cooler, so to speak.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

Also, I found that Modern Marvels is no longer being shown on History.

Probably one of the three best shows that channel has ever had. Maybe one of the best shows in the history of television.

I think I'm going to binge that show. Even the earliest episodes from '96 are outstanding.

Seriously, f_ck Mark Burnett for ruining good educational TV.

There hasn't been a good comedy show on broadcast TV that lasted since Frasier. Ok, I never got into it but I suppose Modern Family counts.

The Good Guys and Surviving Jack were fantastic but got the axe after a season on Fox.

Part of that is because it was a slow boiler, but also AMC is usually a mid-tier cable network. I think a fair number of people Netflixed that one as the seasons became available over time, rather than upgrade their subscription.

Speaking of which, I haven't have cable in 2.5 years. Anyone know if Showtime has any sort of streaming deal? I'd like to watch the Twin Peaks "concluding reboot", but I sure as hell am not picking up a premium cable package to do it. I'll wait for Netflix or DVD if I have to.

Honest question, what would you consider "lasted?" 5 years? 10?

If you count FX as broadcast tv, I'd say "The League" was solid for the first 5 seasons. It lasted 2 more, but those seasons were pretty much trash. It really dropped off in quality.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

Speaking for myself, the traditional definition of a "long-runner" is at least 10 seasons, but for any show after 2000, I would consider anything 5+ seasons to fit the category.

The one exemption I would make, would be some of these dramas that have decided by the 3rd season or so that there are (x) amount of seasons left, and that's it, and not because of ratings. It's ending because that is where the story ends.

In what world is a cable channel considered broadcast TV?
And The League was awful after the first 2-3 seasons.

That makes sense. In fact, Netflix already did this with Bloodline - it's done after Season 3 next year (which was already paid for, so - sunk cost). However, it apparently cost $7-8.5 million per episode to make. At that price, you need an audience much bigger than Netflix, and IMO, it's proof that you can't just force Dallas to have a kid with Breaking Bad, and expect get a result that makes money on a subscription network. Different era of TV.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

I plan to start OA soon - possibly today although I'm going to see Rogue 1 again (this time in IMAX) so it may have to wait until tomorrow.

Watched EP1 of Chance with Hugh Laurie. The noir theme and San Fran setting with some great actors/characters have me intrigued to keep going.

Shameless S8 completely redeemed the crapfest that was S7.

Finished Berlin Station last night. It started slow but the last half of the season was very good. I hadn't seen much buzz about this show until the latter half as well so I think it was under the radar, but I highly recommend. I didn't realize Richard Armitage played Francis Dolyride (sp?) on S3 of Hannibal (speaks volumes on his acting) and from the, "Where are they now?" vault a major part was played by Daniel-san's Japanese gf from Karate Kid 2.

My sister started and ended OA today. She's more kind in reviews than I am. She's also confused

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

For network sitcoms I will watch Modern Family, The Goldbergs and Last Man Standing.

For non-network People of Earth is quite good.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

If you watch anything from TV this week please watch last Sunday's 60 Minutes story on the White Helmets that risk their lives every day saving victims of bombings in Aleppo. I don't even have words.
